Over 500 beers from Other Half reviewed on here and this was the first that I ever bought at their new location at Domino Park in Brooklyn. Always wanted to give this a go as it's a classic in their lineup and needless to say, nothing like their usual fare. Being a Black / Cascadian Dark Ale, this got better as it warmed as I enjoyed it and it's subtle nuances.

No surprise that this had a dark brown pour to it that bordered on black with a fluffy, mocha head that was full of bubbles and long-lasting. Loved the lacing that was left behind as it covered nearly all of my pint glass with a thick ring near the top and plenty of streaming suds the rest of the way down. Dark bread, licorice, a hint of dark fruit, baker's chocolate, and malt bordering on burnt and roasted filled the nose as some blood orange, deep coffee, earthy hops, and resin reminiscent of a West Coast Pale Ale or IPA entered the fray.

This was full-bodied, plenty earthy, and almost like an English Porter as it was plenty roasted, bready, and chewy on the palate. Loved the alcohol in this and the subtle range of flavors as it left a nice slickness behind and went down easily for needing a small chaser of water afterward. Canned on 2/19 with "HONK" written below it, I enjoyed this beer and wish that Other Half would attempt something like this a bit more often. It's obvious by now that they can take on whatever they tackle and this was further proof of why I return to them time and time again!

This is act V of New @CanConPhilly Beer Sunday (Week 709)! It is like a Shakespearean tragedy & we are wrapping things up.

From the CAN: "Cascadian Dark Ale".

As our play comes to an end, it is only fitting that the finale begins with a CAN! GEN/Bro. Woody lays dying, smote by numerous swords & knives & the vaunted Crack! & Glug is all that remains. It boils forth with just better than two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. The subsequent lacing was duly lapped up by a jet-black cat! Speaking of which, the color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose smelled of licorice, anise, treacle & pine-like wintergreen. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but close. I allowed it to roll around on my tongue to warm & guess who came out to greet me?!? None other than Simcoe the Kitty, having done her catty business somewhere & wanting to be scratched & rubbed. Sheesh, Beyond Simcoe's cattiness, the taste was an admixture of (dark) chocolate pudding, cigar smoke, ashtray, light treacle, anise and a bit of light grapefruit citrusiness with the latter to keep me on my toes. Finish was dry & smoky & while this will never be my go-to style, this was quite good.

Pour: On draft at The Jeffery in NYC. Poured in to a tulip glass. Appearance: Black. Thin off color head which reduces quickly. Lacing present on the sides of the glass. Aroma: Resin-like and earthy notes. Very mellow and approachable. Taste: Roasted coffee notes. Subtle hops and earthy like flavors are present. Aftertaste: slightly burnt coffee on the back end. Overall: Easy drinking and pretty straight forward. Good. 3.31 out of 5.
