Had a bunch of buds over the other night and we ripped through a dozen other half stouts side-by-side for science.
The list included:
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged W/ Coconut, Vanilla & Cardamom)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged With Vanilla)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon-Barrel With Coffee Hazelnut And Cocoa Nibs)
In Absentia Luci - Red Wine Barrel
In Absentia Luci - Rum Barrel Aged
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Apple Brandy Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Rum Barrel Aged)
Cane Life (bourbon Barrel Aged Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Cocoa, Cinnamon And Ancho Peppers Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Coconut And Coffee Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Tahitian Vanilla Version)
The Absentias were hit and miss...this one was pretty in the middle towards the top. The rum gave a nice compliment to the brew that set it apart from the bourbon brews. It wasn't as good as the rum orbit, but good for the absentias.

This was yet another bottled beer that I bought from an Other Half release that took a while for me to get to. I enjoyed the In Absentia Luci and thought that the rum barrel aging would enhance this beer. That was the case though this took a bit of getting used to since the effects of the rum nearly overpowered the the Stout here. With so much going on and so much potency, this was a slow sipper but quite pleasing for someone who enjoys the spice, stickiness, and sweetness of a good dark rum!
Nice dark pour to this with a big tan head full of lively bubbles. A bit thicker than the regular version of this, there was a good amount of chocolate and dark fruit in the nose up front, with some rum spice and molasses underneath that. All of those were present in the taste, along with some vanilla, booze, and sugarcane. The malt had the feel along the lines of caramel and there was quite a bit of slickness in the mouthfeel and aftertaste of this, serving as a reminder that this was indeed a beer and not a rum that happened to feel like one!
While the alcohol wasn't listed on the bottle, it had to easily be over the 12.0% that was found in the regular version of this. Not a typical Stout by any means, those who love rum, complex brews and Other Half's lineup will be impressed by how well-rounded out this was for something of such strength. A slow sipper that was excellent from start to finish once the flavors set in!

Bottle purchased at Other Half on 3/26/16. Super dark brown pour with a foamy tan head. Subtly sweet nose. Rum flavor is prominent, along with some dark fruits, raisins and some astringent. Finish is sweet. Improves vastly as it warms. Not markedly better than the non-barrel version.
