Draft at brewery. Light malty, nutty aroma. Medium brown with small ring of head. Taste dries out, wooden, nuts. Light bodied builds to crescendo rapidly, and then...Mild lingering palate.

Right Proper
No Depression Country Alt
A: Poured into a 13.5oz balloon glass with a massive off white head filling the top half of the glass. Translucent dark amber to copper color. Some head retention along the side of the glass. No visible carbonation.
S: The nose is subtle with earthy and musty characteristics. Some nuts and a touch of raisin. A hint of metallic notes.
T: The flavor starts off with bready malts. There's just a touch of dried fruit sweetness, but otherwise this beer is dry, and finishes with some bitterness (as described on the menu) that reminds me of bitter walnut and comes through with some slight lemon.
M: It's a smooth mouthfeel but still well carbonated.
D: It's an interesting take on the alt style. It's certainly more bitter than some of the German alts that I've had, most notably, Frankenheim, and the subtle sweet malt flavors that can be present in such an alt are played down. It's more bitter than I expected, but it's still tasty and goes very well with one of the cheese plates offered here at Right Proper.

Had at Right Proper. This beer has a murky brown color and an enormous head that took up nearly a quarter of the glass. Eventually it died down. The smell is yeasty and a bit spicy. The taste begins with a rich and unique malt flavor and each sip ends with a sweetness that reminds me of root beer. An interesting beer that is worth trying.

On tap at the brewpub.
A good looking but unusual altbier with a Belgian (Saigon yeast) twist.
Slightly funky with a good, but relatively dark roasted, malt base.

The best altbier I've consumed when not in Germany.

Growler from the source.
Mahogany body with hints of burgundy and crimson. The beer hisses as the nearly two inches of sea foam head gradually dissipates. Dark fruits, spice, German sweet breads. Bready and yeasty, slightly sweet, finishing dry. Mild bitterness. Solid.
