Dark black in color with a faint trace of off white head on top of this beer. I smell bourbon and a faint trace of roasted barley in this beer. The nose is a bi weak. The flavor is primarily dark roasted barley and a trace of bourbon. The mouth is fairly quaffable and smooth considering the overall strength.

Poured into a snifter.

2.5 A: Black color. Huge foamy light brown head that falls quickly and leaves no lacing. The second pour's head held better for some reason.

2.0 S: This is the second barrel aged brew I've had today and they both smell pretty damn similar and I'm not a fan of either one. This also has a plastic, lemongrass vibe going with it, but it's not as bad in this one. I wouldn't be surprised if the "bourbon" barrel used in this one was also Stranahan's given that this is also made in CO. I don't know if Stranahan's smells and tastes like ass or if the two brewers that got a hold of their barrels don't know how to use them. In any case, the whiskey (and the aromas mentioned) dominate the nose. The underlying stout offers a bit of roastiness, but not much else. Everything else gets lost behind the booze.

2.0 T: This is perhaps the blandest barrel aged stout I've ever had. The whiskey isn't very strong and the stout is barely there. Earthiness, lemongrass, and melon from the whiskey. Some oak as well. Roastiness from the stout, but not much else.

2.0 M: Lighter medium body. Too much carbonation. Lacking creaminess.

2.0 D: This is more like watered down whiskey than the barrel aged ESB I had earlier today. Not sure where the stout went, but it's not here. Bland and forgettable.

Picked this up while on vacation in Denver. Dark mahogany pour that's almost black with one finger head that fades quickly with minimal lacing. The nose is a little subdued initially, but really opens up as it warms. The bourbon dominates the smell along with hints of vanilla and roasty malt. The taste follows suit with the bourbon once again dominating. Hints of brown sugar, vanilla, and caramel complement it nicely. The mouthfeel is a little on the dull side for an Imperial stout and a bit fizzy as well. As Imperial Stouts go, this probably lacks a little boldness, but it's still solid and the bourbon really comes through for me. Definitely better than some of the previous reviews suggest.

Appearance is dark brown/black. Pours with a healthy tan head that sticks around for a while. Aroma is very simple, Malt with a hint of vanilla/bourbon. Taste is a lot better than the aroma with brown sugar, oatmeal, vanilla and some candylike sweetness I can't place. A lot better than the smell suggests. The mouth feel is averagely medium bodied with a slight slickness to it. overall I really like the taste but would have rated it higher had it had an aroma and mouth feel to match.

Served on-draught into a nonic half-pint glass at Rockyard Brewing in high altitude Castle Rock. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours no head whatsoever. Colour is a nontransparent solid black.

Sm: Bourbon, alcohol, cream, caramel and light milk/lactic notes. A mild strength aroma.

T: Bourbon undertones throughout. Caramel on the fringe. Some light cream is present, mainly on the open. Lightly milky. Very balanced, but timid and understated (especially for the style). Built pretty well.

Mf: Smooth and wet. The thickness is about right. Generally complementary of the flavours.

Dr: Nicely drinkable. I'd have it again. It'd be better suited to nitro-draught.

Poured a dark black/brown, almost opaque. Light tan/white head. Light to no lacing.
Scent is very light. Maltiness is there but considering what this should should be, there's almost nothing there.
Taste: malty. The finish has a nice bourbon barrel taste. Slight vanilla, slight smoke. It's supposed to be an oatmeal stout with bourbon barrel, which is apparent, but a little lighter than expected.
Overall I think this is good. I will get it again, but I think it can be more well rounded and complex than this.

First off, this thing exploded on me, at cellar temp and not moved for a few days. That was lame. It was not a gusher, and ended up pouring with a flat cola stillness, all the more insulting. Looks aside, let's see...

Smell is oak, coconut, and some bourbon. A bit on the modest side I suppose.

Taste is really oaky, coconut mostly, some vanilla. Eh.

Mouthfeel is a little watery, a touch thin. The traditionally silkiness of the oatmeal is lost.

Drinkability is ok, it's a lighter BBS, just kind of generic, a little sticky, more meh.

the label has changed from the one pictured, and my guess here is that the beer inside must have too, since its pretty solid stout, and the ratings here indicate a much weaker product than the one i just drank. dark brown, like good chocolate, with a sudsy inch of tan foam without much retention. aroma of wet wood more so than oak bourbon barrel. dark barley and chocolate malt in a higher proportion give this a lightness and a sweetness that smells excellent. some bourbon on the start, but less so than the whiskey river version for the flood relief. its subtle, and it glides gently into a heavy roast profile with minimal sweetness and a touch of vanilla. its lightness makes it a winner, a bomber is no problem to drink, and this is easily the best beer ive had from rockyard to date. velvety soft in feel and no alcohol visible. i would buy this again.
