Lured to Crown Heights this evening for din & drinks. Going to ex-Yankees pitcher Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter’s place (8X All Star, 5X World Series Champion, & 1974 American League Cy Young winner), and caught Smutty Pat curbside of his event (having missed the show at 4AP last night and no, I’m not happy about it). Little something in the row on Bedford (really, this is Bedford? The Bedford I know is so ‘burg and this is so not), that greets you with a wafting awesome a ½ block away...
Now I can hardly see, but the place appears long and deep, extending into backyard space forever. There looks to be a bar in and to the right. An ‘L’ of dark wood, with a lip, crosshatched wood base, brass foot rail, and seating for a few shy of a dozen on hightop chairs. The barback holds a 16 tap tower on a central panel below a mirror, with booze lined fronted shelves glow back lit, and specialty casings in between brick backed (does that sentence make any kind of sense?) Horizontal board above listing taps, flats to each side (one of them shows the Rangers game up 2-0 over dirty Boston, the other shows some freaky Spanish soap opera), and cocktail boards on the end. Glassware on center shelving below and cooler space to both sides. And a kitchen cupboardy piece off to one side.
Pressed tin wall & ceiling panels up front, open rafters with cross beams across the center of the bar with baby spots. Phat track spots up front and candles riddled about. Big brick far wall with, um… pieces (a wagon wheel, a rear hatch from a dodge ram pickup truck, a vintage Stag beer sign, etc). Light brewery signage and the obligatory Cajun/Abita/New Orleans/Mardi Gras print. Ram’s head with beads (like rams go to Mardi Gras, pa-lease). And the inversion trip of doors and frosted window pieced ceiling action to the rear amidst wood shingle walls with mounted lanterns. Slat laminated floors. Potted plants up front, and a faux fireplace to the rear.
Bar counter on the front paneled window wall and on the wall along the entrance. 2 long hightop tables for the share past there, and nearly a dozen 2-seat tables running adjacent to the bar on shared dark colored leather benching, with the sill over the seating back lined with a shitload of hot sauces the length. A single hightop table top back back, and adjacent corner bar counter space to the rear on panel windows, with something of views over a shorty rear outdoor space, with a trio of picnics and strung lighting.
16 taps, a few relatively locals (Greenpoint Harbor Maibock, Keegans Mothers Milk), regionals (Wolavers IPA, and the ½ dozen Smuttys for this event; Finest Kind IPA, Vunderbar!, Really Old Brown Ale, Baltic Porter, Summer Weizen, Big A IPA), craft afar (Abita Lemon Wheat, Two Brothers Domaine DuPage French Style Country Ale, Widmer Brothers Columbia Common, Shiner Black Lager, Oskar Blues Old Chub), a lone import (Guinness), and a single cider (Original Sin Cider). I drank the Smutty Vunderbar & Baltic Porter. And 30+ bottles, some mix and match everything; ½ of them import, the remainder being macro, micro, gluten free, & cider. (Lovely) Orval runs a cool $11.
And we did din. Cajun corn bread & Cajun slaw for the table. Only ½ of us were dealt settings, making it hard to get one’s slaw on, but they were solid. Entreed up with the jambalaya mostly because I never miss an opportunity to say the word aloud. Spicy sautéed tomato base, with andouille sausage, chicken, & shrimp, with trinity vegetables, cooked in white rice. It was totally cooked to death but tasty. Ben hit the blackened catfish po’boys (real good) and Bethy the Croque Monsieur (a nice tasso ham spicy bite thing). Theirs were better than mine; I always order poorly, it’s true. The shrimp ‘n grits we ordered never showed up, but had they, I’m sure they would have been good.
Revisited one night and did the red beans ‘n rice app times 2, for the table this go around. And then the gumbo file; a medium dark roux with andouille sausage, shrimp, & crab meat, trinity vegetables, house Cajun spice, & file powder dealt over white rice. Real damn tasty, nicely done. Dessert for the hell of it, the Key lime cheesecake, which did rock. And a Single Cut 18 Watt IPA (which did not suck) to wash it down.
Chill house, although the music held too much Phil Collins & Don Henley and all the wrong 80’s for my liking. Server was some good shit, pleasant, engaging, attentive, all that. The eats were very good and the drink well compliments. I will eat there again.
