Didn't like this so much. Rich hoppyness, metallic/tinny. Orangey citrus flavours. Bitter, sharp and dry finish. The mouthfeel felt a bit thin, compared to the amount of flavour, which didn't seem right to me, didn't like the metallic flavour much either. But lots of positives, nice hoppyness and good amount of bitterness.

Pours a murky brown orange with no head and lots of sediment. Apples and flowers on the nose. Smoky cider malts with clove and cedar hops. Swampy fruit finish. Sharp, medium, some burn.

Is this a bad batch? Camra says it's a real ale, which makes me wonder if it failed to condition in the bottle, because it poured dead. Not even average by homebrew standards. I really hope this is an aberration, for the brewer's sake.

Picked up at a wine store in London. Appears a clear dark aber with a bit of lacing. Eh, this beer is really lacking in the hops department. These an interesting sweet biscuit malts taste, but then only a note of peppery orange hops before an all-too neutral finish. Eh, these guys can do better.

Got this bottle from the Pitfield's Beer Shop. The BB date is 05/2008.

A: pours in a goblet a hazy, dark copper hue with a constant flow of carbonation; the off-white head is big but fluffy, gradually collapsing with traces of uneven but tight lace around the glass. A thick, muddy layer of yeasts left on the bottom of the bottle with some elements floating in the liquid... looking really massive.
S: semi-sweetish flowery, honeyish, and hop aroma upfront, while at the back there's an intense, slightly sourly-sweet prune like maltiness sustaining. Quite different from some other English IPA I've tasted, or not as hoppy as I've hoped for.
T: upfront is a rich texture of intrusive, semi-sweet and exotic aromatic flavour of yeasts (I believe) along with lots of floral hoppy flavour with a tangy and nutty bitter touch; prevailing bready maltiness and some semi-tartly sweet fruity flavour develop in the mouth, leaving a warmish/alcoholic aftertaste with a balance gearing towards herb-like bitterness with lingering malty overtone until the end, like that of some richer Scoth Ale or Wee Heavy; pretty dry and bitter finish.
M: a bit sharp on the mouthfeel initially due to the yeasts' assertiveness, turning semi-thick yet soft in texture. Overall a medium-bodied and full-flavoured ale, but falling short of the complexity as we know of an IPA from the modern interpretation.
D: this beer is brewed according to a recipe dated 1837 (though it remains a secret as to which brewery back then passed on this recipe, as the brewer refuses to disclose the info.), but I personally prefer modern versions of IPAs. Still a quality brew, could be better if yeast condition is put right, IMO.
