I caught Saint Arnold's Spring Bock on sale at the local HEB for $5.99/sixer. Colorful bottle with badly designed text on the neck label that bleeds so far into the background that it's nearly illegible. Small quibble, but if you're going to the trouble of a neck label that gives some information about the beer/brewery, you might want to make it readable.

Fortunately the beer more than made up for the packaging presentation. This is a fine bock beer, sweet and sensual, from a well-respected and established Houston microbrewery.

It poured ok, with a presentable head and a caramel-copper coloring. Not quite as dark as I had expected, but not looking too thin, either. Above average nose, hints of malts and a very slight alcohol twinge.

The taste was dominated by pure, sweet, malty goodness. Smooth and full of character. The hops made their presence known in the wake of the brown-sugar malt sweetness, but they were definitely muted and pushed to the background, there for balance only. Slight nuttiness on the back of the tongue.

Good mouthfeel with nice carbonation level.

Exceptionally drinkable. The first one was down before I even realized it. I'll buy this one again for sure. Saint Arnold's produces a good lineup of brews, and the Spring Bock is a great reflection of their ability to craft quality beers at affordable price points. Good show.

poured from the 12 oz bottle into my new belgium goblet:

A = copper/orange - super clear, and light head settles quick the a thin film , NO LACING at all.

S gentle , understated (read WEAK) malty to the nose

T about the same as above ^ a nice malty taste but nothing further

M solid, standard carbonation, no ABV on the palate

D good sessioner IMHO - dive in deep to this standard beer.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. can into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Pours a deep copper, nearly clear, with a fair amount of lively carbonation and a thin tan head that fades fairly quickly.

S: Rich toasty malts, a touch of grassy hops. Clean, like a lager should be, with just a hint of yeast esters. Not a huge nose outside of the bready malts though.

T: Clean flavors - toasted malts with slight sweet yeast esters and sweetness from the malts. Finishes as it fades into a touch of grassy or floral hop bitterness. Flavor a bit disappointing as the malts don't live up to the nose.

M: Light body, decent carbonation sensation, and low alcohol presence.

O: An easy drinker, and maybe a good gateway for someone getting into craft beer, but not the best Bock available for sure. Nothing offensive, but nothing to seek out.
