poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass

A - Pours a perfectly translucent light straw with champaign levels of carbonation streaming upwards to the white, rocky, two-finger head. Head is exceptionally fizzy and I will be surprised if it makes it to the bottom of the glass.

S - Musty light malt and a hint of lemon zest upon opening the bottle. More of the same in the glass although slightly subdued. Really just a tick better than some of the macros....

T - Crisp malt upfront. The body is a refreshing blend of clean and light malt and crisp lemon zesty noble hops. Splash of citrus hops as the beer passes over the back of the tongue and then everything shuts off. Pleasant musty reemergence of lemon zest, noble hops and light malt in the finish.

M - On the thicker side of light bodied with a moderate of carbonation. Could be quite a bit more lively in the mouth as this one looses its carbonation too quickly. Not bad though.

Despite its early impressions, Summer Pils turned out to be a satisfactory brew in the end. At first take, the appearance and smell combine to form a beer that seems to be not much better than PBR. Much of this is forgiven once you take a sip and are greeted by pleasant citrus hop notes and a decent mouthfeel. Not my first choice in Pilsners, but one could surely do much worse while living in Houston for the summer.

Appearance: Not as deep gold as a German Pils, more yellow-gold, the snow white year dissipated almost instantly, but it's got tons on CO2 exploding up the sides inside the glass, continuously adding more white bubbles around the rim.

Aroma: Pils malts aroma, but not really that strong, really, I'm not impressed with this aroma as its relatively missing. There's some Noble hops, too, hiding inside whatever my super deep breaths manage to pull up.

Flavor:
Up front: Ok, here we get some hefty bitterness with a good deal of tartness/astringency thrown in, verging on becoming heavy handed, yet it seems to pull back just as I start to feel it's bite. I also get some sweetness here, super sweet Pils malts.

Mid: Again, verging on heavy handed bitterness, biting astringency with some citrus and a little lemon bite. On the sides you get even more of above, a bittersweetness that barely registers here with almost extreme sweetness.

Back: Mmmm, more of the same. I'm still waiting for the Pils malt sweetness to show up. Lots of bitter/astringent again. Finally, in the very back the Pils malt sweetness shows up in spades, decent in flavor, but still quite bitter.

Aftertaste: Astringency is pretty much all you have after you swallow.

Mouthfeel: Pretty good, quite thick, creamy, tartness gives it a crisp, dry, snappy feeling over the tongue.

Overall: Maybe it's me, but I really like to taste PILS (malt) in my Pils! It's got some sweetness kicking around in the back and some sides to the front, but it's only when you swig it all around the mouth do you get some as it hits all parts of the tongue at the same time... and then, after awhile, I taste lots of Sweet Pils malt, but still, it's hard to find it. From mouthfeel, it's a typical German, yet the aroma is poor and reminds me of a Fernsehbier. I'm torn whether I like this beer. For the American market, maybe a very bitter beer with little Pils malt flavor is a winner, but not for me. Again, I want Pils in my Pils, and a Pils without a decent amount of the Pils malts showing up is a weak beer. Overall, it's not a bad beer, but I'm not saying I'd drink this as a "summer" beer. A 3.4 of 5.
