bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark brown color...almost stout like. Smell is HUGE on pumpkiny goodness...wow! the most amazing smelling pumpkin beer ive ever experienced. taste is also big on pumpkiny goodness but with a big, full bodied mouthfeel of a stout. im really impresssed....

overall this is one of the best pumpkin beers in existence. 2010? bottle consumed in 2013 may have helped things, but damn i want another right now!

From notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tasting glass.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a slightly transparent edge and a moderate creamy cap.

Divine Reserve #9 has a bit of molasses, dark chocolate, lots of pumpkin, some nice spices, and some vanilla.

The flavor follows the nose up nicely. A nice pumpkin presence comes through right away, with molasses and a bit of dark chocolate providing a nice sweetness. There is a nutmeg and cinnamon spiciness and then a light bitterness toward the end.

It starts with a nice sweetness and a moderately full body. With the spiciness, a light oily residue comes through toward the end of the sip. The carbonation is light but is on the creamy side.

This is a nice pumpkin beer.

Thanks to TexasStout for this one. I have a big vertical lined up to have someday, but for now I have extras of this one so might as well crack one, now that it's a few years old.

Ug screw cap, minus points! Although it did give me a little message, "hops and kisses" so I can't stay mad at it. And they did date it, 11/12/09, drinking as it warms a little from cellar temp so should be above 50deg as Saint Arnold requested.

Pours a smaller but dark colored fizzy almost 1/2 finger head that fades fairly quickly, typical for this high abv and interesting for a 3+ year old beer, no lacing of course, a thick looking syrupy beer with nice legs on the glass, and all but pitch black color, and light yeast floaties.

Nose is... strange actually... it has fruity aromas, straight up banana, and some starchy tropical fruits specifically a few I've had in Brazil but I don't know the name, light herbs and spices but the root beer like style herbs or sassafras, and tons of sweet style baking spices, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. Finally in there is some dark malts, a faint black malt darkness, more Belgian style carafa and other Belgo like stout aromas, nutty earthy root like, with a little tingly booze, and a light velvety chocolate aroma with cacao nibs.

Taste is just as unique, there are some dark malts, molasses, faint black malts and Belgian like malts again, etc. Then tons of chocolate, cocoa nibs right out, creamy velvety expensive Belgian chocolate flavors. Then into the spices again, plenty of them but not holiday spices. Again the sassafras like and sweet baking spices are a-plenty, nutmeg, faint cinnamon that even gets a little spicy, cardamom, maybe faint allspice, etc. With them is the brown sugar, molasses, very faint figs and nuts, etc, and a very light fruity flavor with those figs, but luckily no banana. The spices and herbs really take over the main flavor, but the velvety smooth chocolate and cocoa flavors are nice too. Booze cuts in slightly, but is muted for the most part as it gets overtaken by the malts, but does get slightly tingly and eventually gets hot. Finish is drier but a little sticky syrupy, long lingering velvety chocolate, little caramel and cocoa, as well as the baking spices, and surprisingly the booze fades out fairly quick.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, smooth and velvety chocolate feel, lighter but decent carb, a bit of warming tingly booze.

Overall pretty good, not sure if the 3 years helped if it was too much on the spices before, or the booze, or the dark malts etc, but this is quite nice. A good velvety chocolate, baking spices galore, etc, quite a nice beer, glad I have a couple more.

Thanks to Lowgear for the IP trade to finally review this one.

App- A nice looking stout. Was more of a brown color with speckles of black. A good rich and deep center. A small 1/2 finger of off tan bubbles that faded quickly and left a little bit of a pond layer. A couple bubbles on edges with a couple dots of cling.

Smell- Really after 3 years this still smells like a fall day of baking in the kitchen. Has a rich pumpkin and spice note on the nose. Bakers chocolate with a little bit of a earthy bitter note to it as well.

Taste- The taste is just a bit flat due to age I think. Its still a very flavorful stout with a good bit of layers behind it but turning a bit grainular vs. silky smooth. The malts in this create the smoothness but the spice and pumpkin are a little off. Still balanced and doesnt overpower but nutmeg does come into play heavily.

Mouth- A fairly silky and smooth stout like I mentioned in the taste. A lighter medium and a fairly medium carbonation. The residual nutmeg is a bit heavy but the pumpkin and chocolate flavors balance nicely. A bit grainy but still good.

Drink- It was hard to track one of these down, but glad I did. Its october now, so drinking pumpkin beers is fine by me. This was good and flavorful. A very good night cap.

"I Barley Made It"

Poured into a New Belgium glass black with a one finger tan head that disappated quickly. No lacing. The smell has a strong scent of pumpkin. The taste is awesome. It's like a chocolate pumpkin pie. There is a strong alcohol presence, which is expected. But considering the time of year, it warms you up nicely. With the combination of pumpkin and alchol warmth, this is the perfect winter beer. Too bad it won't be back next year.

Poured into tulip glass black as oil, but carbonation almost gone. The scent is still strong of spices and pumpkin. The taste has mellowed quite a bit. The chocolate pumpkin pie I described before definatly is not the case anymore. The pumpkin is still there, and the spices are still there, but the malts that once gave this a chocolate flavor are definatly not as strong. The alcohol burn is also lower which makes the mouthfeel a little better, and the lower carbonation hasn't affected the mouthfeel at all.

Overall, she's aging well.

Into my brand spankin' new Hill Farmstead tulip.

A - Dark black, sans any viscousness. Medium brown head that fades very quickly, most likely due to age. Glad it actually had carbonation.

S - First smell is a nutmeggy, biscuity malt with some faint chocolate as well.

T - Taste follows suit. Starts with some graham cracker biscuit. More chocolate in the taste than in the nose. Real nice. Slight vanilla and cinnamon in there.

M - Nice and velvet mouthfeel, slight alcohol burn on the back end.

O - A real nice beer. A lot in similarity to Pumking, actually. Glad they are remaking this beer, and I'm damn glad that I got to try the original. Shame on me for not remembering who gave me this as an extra.

Another 12 oz bottle courtesy of a long lost trading partner. This one was poured in to a cervoise.

Appearance: Fairly one-dimensional, raging and surging and seething out of the neck of the stubby bottle in to the glass. Even a vigorous pour yields half a finger of dark tan head that's gone as fast it came, leaving an imperceptible necklace of beige jewels. No lacing of any sort, and nary a hint of visible carbonation makes for a very still, average looking brew.

Aroma: The aroma is likely this beer's best attribute. Graham cracker honey crust notes mingle with the slew of spices - cinnamon mainly, with cardamom and nutmeg also evident, all noticeable as soon as this bottle was cracked - over a see of bittersweet dark cocoa, melon sugar, and dark caramel. Varied and enjoyable.

Taste: Menthol-esque cinnamaldehyde, estery pumpkin sugar notes, and a slew of malts ranging from dark chocolate to brown sugar to toffee make for a mishmash of favors that don't always treat one another well. While the aroma was pleasant if not exciting, the taste is a little abrasive, rough, showcasing alcohol fusel notes, both too strong and too-inauthentic spices, and a malt base that's at times too sweet and at times too dry, crunchy, bitter, odd. All that being said, I certainly appreciate the attempt to balance the favors here, and the idea of a chocolate pumpkin imperial stout is definitely appealing (Midnight Sun has a fantastic one), but this one misses the mark in the mouth.

Mouthfeel: Enough carbonation, probably too much, both because it makes this one a little uneven but also because it augments and amplifies the spice in ways that's slightly abrasive. The beer itself feels slick, oily, a little fat.

Drinkability: Swing and a miss, unfortunately. This one's both too hot, too heavy, too carbonated, and too spiced, and it's a shame because - in the right balance, with the right attenuation - this one really has the makings of something special. It's my understanding that St. Arnold has made this a regular - bring down the alcohol, back off the spice, and dry it out a little, and this becomes a go to for craft beer drinkers.

Poured into a snifter on 1/26/12

Medium brown on the pour, settling a few shades darker. I decided to give it the old swirl and in went some muddy sediment which pretty much darkened the beer even more. The head was shy of one finger; it didn't last long and only a skim remained. No lace.

Aromas of licorice, pumpkin pie spices, burnt molasses, rum-soaked prunes, oatmeal raisin cookies and some oxidation. A persistent floral note couples with the spices creating the suggestion of holiday-time scented candles. It doesn't smell too boozy. As it warms it starts to exhibit more of the sugary. Subtle hints of tobacco juice.

Sipping-wise, oxidation is known immediately, lingers for a spell and hoists itself back up for the finish. At least the other flavors mask most of it (except the finish). Burnt sugars abound - molasses, licorice, prune and a hint of scorched chocolate. It leans a sweeter than I prefer but, though a bit messy in general, it's not over the top. There are some residual spices on the back end, but the pumpkin pie aspect of the aroma is subtle at most.

Medium-full body with a reasonable amount of viscosity. Whereas the alcohol was soft in the aroma, it's bold on the palate, boasting a tingling sensation that is inclined to last long after any other flavor residuals have passed.

I found some interesting things going on here. I appreciate that the "spices and such" are present in the complexity of the nose while being downplayed to taste; it makes for a greater depth of a drinking experience. In any case, as far as sweet imperial stouts go, I'd say it falls somewhere between Kate the Great and Dark Lord in terms of "pulling it off."

Thanks to who ever sent this to me at some point, been stored in the beer fridge and just shuffled to the back somehow.
Poured dark as night, with a small head which needed a bit of force to acquire. thing ring around the edge hung around.
Smell is dominated by pumpkin pie like smells and now liquorice. smells Divine (ha)
Taste is complex, liquorice, spice, molasses , char. Gonna let this warm and see where it goes. Awfully intense, definite sipper.
Mouthfeel is thick coating decent carbonation hiding in there.
Overall this is such an intense beer, the intensity mellowed a bit with warming but the spice and liquorice was still dominant but those are good things in my book.

Bottle poured into an oversized wine glass.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with a modest head that quickly dissipates.

Smell is of pumpkin pie mixed with alcohol and sweet malt. You can certainly discern the pumpkin spices. Alcohol is very present and hits the nose quickly as well. Also, tons of malt are in this. Caramel and chocolate.

This is very complex. The pumpkin spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are all very present. There is a ton of malt. Sugar and chocolate. Also, the alcohol is strong, and a bit biting.

Body is medium with moderate carbonation.

Comparison:
Pumpkinator comes across very smooth, and pumpkin pie-esque. DR9, while having the similar qualities, also has a lot more malt and much sharper, warming alcohol. Overall, I preferred Pumpkinator, but would recommend both.

A: Pours a deep, dark, silky smooth pitch black. There is about half a finger of tan head that fades quickly. There is no lacing as it drinks.

S: This beer smells sweet and spicy. I'm picking up chocolate and raisins, but I'm also getting cinnamon and candied ginger. It's reminiscent of pumpkin pie.

T: Starts off a bit boozy, but it moves nicely into the spice. I get hits of a hot chocolate (heat, not temperature). But then this beer really mellows out and gets perfectly sweet. Wonderful.

M: Full-bodied beer. It coats the palate, not lingering too long.

O: This is a fantastic beer, and it's seems extremely complex. I was amazed from the start, and I'm amazed at how it changes as it warms. Absolutely delicious.

appearance - head dissipates quickly, leaves good lacing. black, murky dark brown on pour.

smell - wow. anise, pumpkin pie spices, cinnamon stands out, chocolate, alcohol and a bit of wine (might be coming from alcohol and spice combination) and oak. (this is when first poured at fridge temp) later.... some brown sugar

taste - a lot of pumpkin pie upfront with chocolate (this is about at 38 degrees) so obviously not bad to drink cold. a bit of caramel. im fucking impressed. b+? this guy maybe just needed age or im just liking it for its originality and pulling it off so nicely.

mouthfeel - creamy, thick with remarkable smoothness. decent carbonation. solid.

12oz. stubby brown bottle into a tulip.

A: Deep brown, nearly no light. Moderate head on the pour with little retention but some lacing.

S: Light pumpkin and moderate pumpkin spicing. Very pleasant. Some light alcohol that is in place.

T/M: Pumpkin is a bit bigger and the spices definitely are. Almost too much but somewhat balanced by the alcohol and malts. Body is medium full with moderate carbonation.

D: Pretty damn tasty. Wish I had more than 2 left.

Taste: bitter cocoa and pumpkin pie undertones and vanilla bean aromas and flavors. Overly spiced from the cinnamon and cocoa, and progressive bitterness. It smells better than it drinks. Very winter christmassy aromas and flavors, but too bitter and cinnamon. The high alcohol helps to offset the spices a bit.

Thanks to Thirstybird for popping this one. Served in a tulip. Pours the color of cola with no head, just an oily slick and a thin broken band around the shoulders. Nose is somewhat overpowering - cinnamon, all-spice and a trace of ethanol towards the back. Taste follows nose; however, rich chocolatey flavors are also expressed, as well as pumpkin-pie and a suggestion of oxidation. Mouthfeel is medium-light in consistency with a slightly oily texture and a lively carbonation that is a little too assertive for the style. Overall, an interesting beer, but a bit too much spice happening here.

So a huge thanks goes to my constant trade partner exiled for this one. Jason you are the man! He actually had to jump through a couple hoops to score this one for me. I've been sitting it for quite sometime. I felt like me and Andy needed a bold change on this hot and humid night. A huge pumpkin stout should be just what the doctor ordered. Bottle split into tulips.

A: Dark cola brown with red edges. Small mocha head forms and fades almost instantly.

S: The aroma is ORGASMIC as Andy would say. Rich pumpkin pie dipped in dark chocolate and coffee. Vanilla whip cream. This smells like everything I love about fall. Graham crackers and pie spices abound. Just a hint of heat from the insanely high ABV can be picked up.

T: As with the nose the flavors are spot on. So amazing. Pumpkin pie drizzled with chocolate and coffee sauce.

M: Smooth medium body with mild carbonation.

O: A truly wonderful beer. I can't wait to get a hold of some six packs of this stuff for the fall.

Poured into a Claret very aggressively.

Appearance-Dark as night, less then a finger worth of tight bubbled dark brown head. Absolutely no retention and no lacing.

Smell-Was expecting subtle pumpkin flavors but thats all that I get. Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and spices. Smells like the pumpkin pie mix when you first open the can. Really not getting any chocolate, coffee at all.

Taste-Completely follows the aroma. Huge pumpkin spices. Big Nutmeg and big cinnamon. I get some very light chocolate notes, and the presence of the hops really makes it very easy to drink. Slight alcohol burn. Perfect autumn stout

Mouthfeel-Smooth, Creamy, Medium bodied.

Overall- Great beer that I'm glad their turning into a seasonal beer.(Pumpkinator) Would like to see more pumpkin stout attempts in the future.

Popped this one open and the cap read "Wine is for Sissies." Totally agree.
Pours a dark, murky brown with a splattering line of mocha bubbles.
Shocked at the smell. Had no idea what to expect and here is chocolate, hazelnuts, dates, plums, pumpkins, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Wow, intriguing and complex.
This tastes like a chocolaty pumpkin pie with some orange and lemon zest hops on top.
A really enjoyable beer and not overbearing with spices like other pumpkin brews I've had, but there is still some spiciness, richness, and a good creamy feel.
I did not know this was going to be a pumpkin stout and was blown away by it. Easily up there with the best pumpkin/squash based beers I've tasted. The alcohol was mellow, likely due to the age, and the flavors really stand out.

Mikesgroove took this off of my wants list and threw it into one of our recent trades. Thanks Mike.

I poured this one into a small snifter. The body is a deep mahogany with ruby highlights. The brown head rises up slowly, but remains very small. There is almost no retention, as the head disappears immediately. No lacing either.

The smell for this one isn't bad despite a boozy strength. A little bit of anise, some dark fruit, burnt sugar, coffee and a good bit of sweetness. I swear I smell some combination of nutmeg and cinnamon also, but I'm just not sure about those.

Holy cow this one is hot. As soon as I sip it my face is on fire. Booze coming out of my nose and going down my throat. Not a pleasant way to start. When I finally get over the burning, I taste a lot of what can only be described as spices. I have no idea if there were any spice additives in this beer, but it sure as hell tastes like it. A little bit of anise, and a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg. I thought I smelled these spices, but I am sure that I taste them, or at least something that tastes like them. A little bit of toffe is in the background, but no rich coffee or chocolate. Maybe a hint of dark bread.

Fairly light body, but smooth from the carbonation. Well, smooth in a pilsner way, not so much what I would expect from a big stout. It still feels like I just finished taking a shot though.

Not a fan of this one, I should have left it in the cellar for a couple more years. The booze and the spices makes this one taste like it was aged in a spiced-rum barrel. Way too hot, and I'm not a fan of the spice flavors.

A - 12oz purple stubster, you know what it looks like by now, pours death black, brown head that recedes real quick to a ring around the edges and i got a concentration of something that came to the top and stayed, i assume it was some sediment that was disturbed no biggy,

A - I got some chocolate up front, sweet brown sugar and underlying cinnamon, more spices that created a pumpkin pie aroams, holy shit hallmark wish it smelled this good in the fall. I love it because i feel the pumpkin is easy to become an overkill and this wasn't

T - Chocolatey, woody flavors, roasted malts, cinnamon again, pumpkin spices, the heat it there and keeps it from being "divine" the hops are present, very sweet malt presence throughout with a woody character to balance out the sweetness and pumpkin pie offering.

M - very creamy, medium to full body not a very carbonated brew...finishes slightly away from what i feel it should but not horrible just not as smooth as perfect would be.

O - im so glad this is going to be a regular brew from Saint Arnold can't wait to enjoy this one in the cool evenings outside. highly recommended and a great pumpkin flavored stout...drink it

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout (?) with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of cinnamon and light pumpkin with a rich malt base. Taste is quite sublime with great notes of cinnamon mix with light pumpkin pie and a rich lactose forward malt base. Body is quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed though maybe a tad too sweet. Definitely something I would like to have again.

This beer smells delicious! I feel like I am smelling fresh gingerbread cookies mixed with homemade pumpkin pie. It's making me a little hungry to be honest... Along with the spice I am getting a significant amount of booze and some molasses.

The taste follows the nose but with a little more emphasis on the booze, spice and molasses.

Mouthfeel is a little thinner than I would have liked but is very well carbonated. The aftertaste is fantastic. It leaves the gingerbread/pumpkin pie lingering in your mouth with a very warming boozy effect.

This beer is fantastic. I cant wait for it to be bottled this year! This was an excellent and surprising find for sure. Mad props to D&Q

poured into a Bruery Tulip, shared by Josh at our little tasting last night.

A pours brown/amber with some serious carbonation. A light nutmeg brown head that was two fingers high.

S smells like pumpkin pie with lots of ginger, nutmeg, allspice etc. It has a brown bread type smell too with some nice yeasty smells as well

T good taste that reminds me a fair amount of BA Autumn maple. This has much more pumpkin flavor and not as much maple but a very nice gingery flavor as well. alcohol is completely masked by the spicing.

M somewhat of a thin mouthfeel and too much carbonation

overall a really good beer that I really enjoyed even with being slightly overcarbed.

Black, thin tan head, gone quick; narrow ring of paperthin bubbles which flatten to leave a nice even lacing.

Is 'molasses stout' a category? This is swimming in spice, raisin, and molasses. There is a good bit of booze as well as malt in the nose, but you've got to get back the sweetness.

Also 'spiced' right in the front. The fruit as also there, but this is a bit more watery than it initially appears. The mouthfeel is a bit of a letdown, with the 'cakey'/'christmas' aroma I was expecting a big chewy mouth, but that isn't there. This is most evident in the watery raisin flavor that sort of washes through behind all of the other flavors.

Nicely carbed, and not a dissapointing mouthfeel as it stands alone, but with the big aroma I was expecting a similar mouthfeel and this did not deliver that - style well within the style.

Certainly fine. I drank it soon after recieving it, though I have to say I'd like to get a couple bottles and celler than because the flavor is both a bit unique and full of unexpected characteristics that I'd like to taste is with a few years on it.

Pours deep brown, and a vigorous pour produces a finger of tan head. This fades fairly quickly, leaving little lacing.

Very interesting and pleasant aroma to this one, although not at all what I expect in an imperial stout. It reminds me of a spice or pumpkin bread, with sweet cinnamon, cardamom, and molasses coming through in a big way.

What works for me in the smell doesn't come together as well in the flavor. Again, sweet spices, molasses, ginger, some fruit. Very little traditional stout character.

Medium-bodied and smooth, the mouthfeel is fine.

Alcohol is quite well hidden, but the flavor profile detracts from the drinkability. I just don't want to be drinking a lot of this.
