Poured into a Tumbler...

Appearance-A pretty clear brown, some light haze. Head is a light brown that was about one finger. No retention and very little lacing.

Smell-Bready and Earthy aroma. Not too much going on. Some very subtle citrus, but almost non existent.

Taste-Pretty much follows the aromna. Very subtle flavors. Bready, Malts, Earthy, but it's just watery and bland. The finish is a little dunkleweizen like and some slight banana.

Mouthfeel-Thin, highly carbonation. Light in body.

Overall-I'm really not sure what kind of style this beer is, but nonetheless not a beer I'm enjoying. St. Arnolds is doing great things, but in this instance, not so much.

EDIT: I may have clicked submit a little too fast and my original D- rating was a little harsh. It's a below average beer, but I can drink it.

I picked this beer up at the DownTown Spec's a few days ago. I just reviewed the Blonde yesterday, so let's give the brown a shot.

Appearance: No off-gas when I popped the top, but after a pretty aggressive pour I managed to get about 1/8" of head. The beer itself is a pretty clear brown with some mild red highlights. The head was gone within about 20 seconds and was a small ring where the beer meets the glass. There are some spots of lace on the glass after drinking.

Aroma: Mostly sweet toffee and chocolate malts along with a subtle American hop presence. As the beer sits a bit, the malts are getting a bit more toasty and the hops are starting to come out clearer. Overall the aroma is clean and pretty nice.

Taste: The flavor follows the aroma pretty closely except that it is thinner than you would have expected. The lack of carbonation accentuates the thinness. There is a very mild roasty component to the flavor that would probably be obscured by any carbonation, but the mostly flat beer is showing it off. The finish is balanced with malt being the predominant factor.

Opinion: Well, this is an OK beer, but it is really suffering from the lack of carbonation. That said, even if the beer was carbonated properly, I don't get much that would make me choose this over their regular Brown ale. In fact, I think that the normal Brown is marginally better as it has more depth in the malt than this beer seems to have. Oh well, I will finish this bottle, but I doubt that I will come back to this one unless I see it on tap or something somewhere.
