Pours black and beautiful with a nice head.

Smell is amazing, spicy pumpkin pie and Christmas, wow.

Taste is full or more awesomeness, brown sugar, apple cider , cloves cinnamon and pumpkin awesomeness.

This is an amazing pumpkin ale, and I don't like pumpkin ale - this is just about perfect for the style, so good!

A: Pitch black with small tan head that sticks around.

S: Nutmeg, clove, and allspice.

T: Spices, maybe a little pumpkin, but more of a stout with spice than a pumpkin beer. Dark and smooth.

M: Some carbonation, smooth, but a little fizzy at the end.

O: Greatness. The best pumpkin flavored beer I've had. The spices are prominent, but not too overpowering. The "stout" of the brew is very sneaky in alcohol. Label has no ABV, but I'd guess 8-9%. So glad I was able to track this down. See you again next year!

just beautiful pumpkin beer, the best one ive had in a long time, and up there with the eddyline as my favorite of this year. its a big dark stout, but drinks a whole lot lighter than its listed 10% abv. dark chocolate color, milkshake thick head, and an unbelievable aroma. more pumpkins than spice, with a bready toast malt profile and not a ton of stout barley bitterness. i get some pie spice, but its subtle. i get vanilla too but not sweet vanilla. the aromas are strong, all of them, and its very appetizing. the flavor is true to the nose, and i love the way the spice and squash are integrated with the normal properties of a well made imperial stout. the creamy feel, the bitter roast, and the pumpkin flesh all really go well together. i have had some other dark pumpkin brews, but this one takes the cake for its unique use of spicing, and how big the beer is without forgoing drinkability. i mean, a glass of this went down real easy, like a 5% porter, the alcohol cannot be detected at all, and i was actually shocked to learn its as high as it is. a pumpkin beer with staying power too, this was nice in late december, and doesnt make me think autumn at all. a unique culinary brew too, i could do a lot with this. best beer ive had from saint arnold by far, this is the first one to really blow me away. loved it.

A: This beer is dark in the glass, but barely allows some light to shine through the edges making a dark brown ruby color. Head was about finger's length and dissipated quickly. No lacing.

S: Yep. The pumpkin is definitely there. I'm getting some spices and nutmeg as well.

T: This is a lot different than what I expected. Lots of pumpkin of course, gingerbread, graham cracker, vanilla, nutmeg, a touch of oak, and some chocolate and coffee. I wouldn't call the taste profile on the Pumkpkinator stout-like. It drinks more like an imperial pumpkin ale or maybe a pumpkin strong porter. Not bad, but not my favorite.

M: The mouth feel is actually pleasant. Pretty full-bodied, thick, with some carb on it. It's a good sipper. Don't know if I can finish the bottle…

O: The beer that I have has been aging for about a year. I'm not sure how this beer tastes without aging, but I think it's, overall, a descent beer with a very complex flavor profile. I'm just not too into the pumpkin beers. I love stouts, but this strayed from that style more than I thought it would. Probably wouldn't buy again, but not because it's a bad brew. Just a thick pumpkin monster. Good beer to try once.

2013 Pumpkinator in bomber (not one of the low filled, tilted cap ones)

This is a very complex brew. I am not sure that I have enough experience to give it a completely proper review considering I have not had this before and have heard some people who had the original Divine Reserve #9 speak so highly of it. That having been said I will do my best.

A: Side poured into a Saint Arnold tester glass procured at the brewery. Appears to be a jet black color but shining a strong flashlight through it reveals a very dark red color. Its completely clear and free of particles. A one finger darkish tan head that quickly disappeared. The lack of head despite more agressive pouring on the second glass seems to indicate undercarbonation. Almost zero lacing on the glass but what is there is very sticky. Strangely, on pouring and drinking the second glass, some of the lacing is very oily and some is very sticky. ???

S: Lots of pumpkin (duh), cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, malts, chocolate and not even a hint of alcohol despite the ABV.

T: Lots of complexity going on here. A lot of pumpkin up front of course, all spices mentioned above, caramel, malts and maybe even some dark chocolate and coffee. Very well balanced and only the slightest hint of booze. Slightly sweet with a nice bitterness aftertaste. A very nice wintertime flavor.

M: Creamy and smooth up front with a little bit of bite and warmth on the back end.

O: There is so much going on here that I am going to let my other ones age for a year and try again. It seems to need some time to let the flavors meld. I have heard so many great things about previous years of this beer. I know the brewery had some issues on this 2013 run with underfills and capping and one of the brewers said it was a pain in the ass to make. This might not be the best year for it but with some aging it might be great. I am slightly disappointed but knowing that this brewing company is excellent, I will get some more next year and compare the aged with the fresh. Overall a great beer. Needs some time in the cellar I think. Regardless, I will be buying some more next year.

22 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a local bottle shop and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are high seeing as it's currently #9 in the top 50 Southwest. Reviewed as an imperial pumpkin stout because the label identifies it as such on its label. No ABV is listed on the label.

2013 vintage. Many bottles in this vintage were low fills, but this isn't one of them.

Served cold - straight from me fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. I initially side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues were expected, but as I poured it became obvious no head was forming so I upped the vigor considerably.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

In spite of the vigorous pour, no real head forms - just a sad-looking light khaki coloured floater ring. Tilting the glass doesn't yield any lacing formation.

Body colour is a predictable dark solid black. Opaque and dull. Not a jet black. No floating yeast particles are visible.

Overall, it's within style conventions (for an imperial stout) but falls short of the appearance of great beers in the style. The lack of a head suggests severe undercarbonation. I'm a bit concerned going into this based on the subpar appearance, but it's egregious. Far from unique or special. I'm optimistic.

Sm: Bread crust, pie crust, dark malts, pumpkin gourd, nutmeg, allspice, graham cracker, toasted malts, brown sugar, clove, cinnamon, pecan, and light rum-soaked stonefruit. The spices seem to actually overwhelm the pumpkin notes, stealing the limelight. I'd like more pumpkin and more diversity of pumpkin flavour - skin, flesh, and seed would be nice in addition to gourd. Dark malts. Chocolate malts.

I'm not picking up any roasted barley, to its detriment. No overt hop character is detectable, nor is any yeast character or alcohol. I don't find any coffee, char, or burnt qualities.

Overall, it's a pleasant appealing aroma of moderate strength which delivers on the beer's premise.

T: What I notice initially and what I love are the strong pie crust/bread crust notes on the climax, which are complemented very nicely by the spices: cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, and clove (in order of prevalance). There's plenty of brown sugar and graham cracker notes throughout. I think the graham cracker is a highlight of the beer. The dark malts and chocolate malts of the foundation get lost in the seamless cohesion of the flavour profile.

Don't look for too much imperial stout style depth here: they don't distract from the pumpkin with notes like cream, coffee, burnt sugars, bourbon, etc. It's all about the pumpkin, as well it should be. But unfortunately, there's not an ideal diversity of pumpkin notes - just gourd and flesh. Luckily though, it feels like authentic pumpkin - not artificial flavouring - which is more than I can say about a lot of pumpkin beers.

Overall, it's a fairly balanced flavour profile, though not quite a gestalt one, and offers some interesting if limited complexity and subtlety. I like it. The lack of overt hop character leaves the beer feeling a bit too sweet, especially on the climax when the sugars really push through. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

Mf: It's a bit too heavy and thick on the palate. Overcarbonated. Too full-bodied. A lighter more accessible feel would really help. The flavour profile doesn't have the intense notes that require this heavy a texture (e.g. bourbon, coffee, vanilla). I like that it's smooth and wet. Unrefreshing. While the presence on the palate isn't ideal, the texture does suit the flavour profile well in a general sense, but doesn't feel custom-tailored to it.

There is some noticeable alcohol presence but it's not hot or boozy.

Not oily, astringent, harsh, rough, or gushed.

Dr: I'm not sure what they're gaining by using an imperial stout as the platform for the pumpkin notes here; the beer's heavy presence on the palate does hold it back, and it doesn't really delve too deep into the potential of an imperial stout. I'm confident there's a style that would better suit the intricate spicing and bready notes they're emphasizing. I do like the beer (especially the impressive graham cracker note), and I'd pick up another bottle to set aside for cellaring, but ultimately I don't know that it's one of the best pumpkin beers out there. Not a world-class beer, anyway. This is definitely a sipper, and could hide its ABV better.

I'm not sure if 2013 is just a weak year for this brew, but based on my experience I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to nab a bottle. A very respectable pumpkin stout, but by no means great.

St Arnold Pumpkinator

Appearance: dark brown, some good small lacing, and no head.

Smell: apple and pumpkin pie.

Taste: rich creamy pumpkin pie with many nice spices (pumpkin spice).

Mouthfeel: chewy-yet-smooth medium.

This is a nice brew. It is a MUST try. The aroma is wonderful. I can't wait until it is released again.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted chocolate malts with some perfumey pumpkin spice and some vegetal pumpkin.

The flavor is sweet roasted chocolate malts with a lot of pumpkin spicing (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove) and some dark fruit, molasses and alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice imperial pumpkin porter/stout.

First a shout out to my dad for bringing me three bottles of this back from his recent trip to San Antonio.

Served chilled into a tulip.

Pours a rich mahogany color with a quarter inch of dark tan head that quickly recedes leaving no surface layer and very light lacing.

Strong aromas of nutmeg and cinnamon with a hint of booze.

Immediate flavors of pumpkin pie spices and toasted pumpkin. Hints of booze and a mild earthiness that reminded of Elysian's "Great Pumpkin".

Heavy bodied but not overboard for the style. Light carbonation with a spicy, sweet finish and lingering aftertaste.

A nicely crafted pumpkin ale. Would make a great dessert beer or winter warmer. Will definitely have again.

S - spicy, raisins, pumpkin pie spices, graham cracker

T - Pumpkin pie spices, dried fruit in the aftertaste, sweet, molasses

M - lightweight feel

O - I have tried this at 1 year old, and also not aged. The one at a year old is more mellow with the flavors more intertwined, and working together than the new one, where each flavor is more easily picked out or noticed. They become more similar to each other as they warm up. Definitely a beer I look forward to every year. One of my favorites.

This beer pours a nearly opaque dark brown/black with a nice amount of creamy tan head but not too much lacing going on.

On the nose, its extremely sweet smelling with a really hefty amount of pumpkin and spice, no cloves or hops, reminds me of a sweet pumpkin pie, don't think I've ever smelled a better beer...

Flavor wise its alot like the aroma, tons of sweet pumpkin pie and spices, plus that nice robust, stouty backbone. Again, don't think there is any room for improvement here, best pumpkin beer I've ever had.

Mouthfeel is nice and thick, low carbonation, just like you would expect from an imperial stout.

One of the best imperial stouts I've ever had, and its especially good for a pumpkin beer.

From a 650 ml bottle into a chalice.

A-A slightly aggressive pour produces about a half-finger of short-lived, dark mocha-colored head. The head leaves no lacing and sits atop a virtually black beer with very little light getting through, even around the edges. Pretty standard stuff here.

S-The smell is huge! There is a ton of pumpkin, ginger, clove, allspice, and graham cracker that would fool almost anyone into thinking they were smelling fresh pumpkin pie. There is just a hint of cocoa, too. The aroma is sweat, creamy, and very full-bodied. The smooth, rum-like alcohol is pretty mild and really compliments the baking spices and pumpkin. If you don't like pumpkin pie, you won't like this, I on other hand....

T-After such a delicious aroma, the taste was a bit of a let-down. There is a still a decent kick of baking spices, ginger, pumpkin, and graham cracker, but I also pick quite a bit more vegetal, earthy bitterness...a bit like rotten pumpkin. The alcohol is a bit more noticeable on the palate and more medicinal than sweet and pie-like. Still, its not bad.

M-The feel is medium heft with a soft, slightly chunky carbonation. The brew is surprisingly filling.

O-This is a big, sweet, take-no-prisoners pumpkin beer. I would have trouble drinking more than one glass of this stuff and if you don't like spices or sweetness, stay away. On the other hand, if pumpkin pie is your thing, this is a great choice...they really nailed the aroma with the graham cracker and spices. I just wish this taste was as smooth and refined as the smell.

2013 Bottle

A: Dark, almost black with very little head.

S: Pumpkin, roasted malts, and spice.

T: Great balance of stout and pumpkin. Hints of spice add a nice flavor profile.

F: Medium to thick body with low levels of carbonation.

O: One of the better pumpkin beers I have had this season, and I have had quite a few. Not too pumpkiny but noticeably a pumpkin beer. If you can find it, grab it.

Dark beer with some reddish tints and a small light brown head that doesn't linger.

Smell is amazing. Like a pumpkin pie in a glass. They absolutely nailed the scent here.

Flavor is great as well. Spicy and cinnamony up front with the pumpkin chasing down the back. A little bit of an off aftertaste, but smooth and drinkable and I typically don't like pumpkin beers. But this one will become a regular this time of year as long as I can find it.

Looking for that perfect post-Thanksgiving beer to appease your non-beer loving family? This is it and this is why...

It pours like a stout, but its near-black body highlights tawny redish-brown edges. Where an initial loosely-knit head forms on the beer, its beige balloons of foam pop in a somewhat fizzy fashion and prefer a still appearance. An aggressive swirl regenerates its head but for only a brief moment until the carbonation is all gone. But at 10%, its glossy coat on the glass gives it more of a cognac appearance than that of beer.

Overwhelming spices evade the nose with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and clove. But a substantial backing of brown sugar, burnt pie crust, chocolate, gingersnaps, graham crackers and walnuts offer up a resounding counterpart to the pumpkin pie spice. Alcohol spicy-sweetness acts like rum on the olfactory senses heading into that first sip.

Its taste offers much more as the burnt sweetness of graham crackers, over-toasted gingerbread, pie crust, brown sugar, charred breads and over-cooked molasses all hit just before the spices arrive at middle palate. That's when the cinnamon & co. take charge and dominate the taste thereafter. Its drier-than-expected finish leaves the spices in control and invite an acrid, nearly-campfire smoke quality in the end.

Full bodied, but with a little uncertainty- the beer's dryish and spicy finish provides a powerfully heated, spiced astringency and desert-like dryness that's totally unexpected from its robust upstart sweetness. The ale simply makes up a lot of ground in short succession. Its rummy warmth concludes with more bitterness that for it'll likely receive credit.

Ok, so it doesn't win over the family. But now its a 10% abv, 22oz beer that none of them are likely to enjoy. But with that entire bomber all to yourself, they are so much more tolerable!, or enjoyable!, or entertaining!

Deep mahogany red body with a rich, creamy, tan head. Pumpkin, allspice, and cinnamon dominate the aroma; roasted grains; a bit of black molasses. Taste mirrors the aroma with additional touches of alcohol burn and a noticeable hop bitterness to balance things out; ripe pear or apricot notes, too. Medium-heavy body; semi-sweet; soft carbonation throughout.

An immense, intense, and enjoyable pumpkin-themed beer. Combining a stout with pumpkin is a winner here. Mouthfeel is relatively light for such a big beer, but the malt grains and pumpkin components are the real highlights, and the relatively light body just makes this beer go down easier. A very fine fall and/or winter holiday beer.

S - Pumpkin, gingerbread, cloves.

T - Lots of gingerbread with a nice subtle pumpkin finish.

D - Medium body with lower carbonation.

O - Nice fall spices and flavors. Nice stuff.

I knew that a cask was being breached at a local restaurant at 7pm and went there early to secure a table as I expected there to be a crowd come 7pm. While waiting I had 2 pints of St. Arnold's "Endeavor" strong ale (aka Divine Reserve #13) before receiving my first glass of Pumpkinator. I immediately thought I had made a step backwards taste wise plus its claimed 10% abv is surely wrong, more like 6.5%. In the expectation of sampling a classic pumpkin ale I had also taken 64 ozs of empty Growler bottles to be filled with Pumpkinator, and whose contents I am now slowly sampling. I still feel that it is way over rated and not a beer that I will ever buy again. Its after taste reminds me of that after eating a Middle Eastern dessert cake. Yuk.

Would like to see more head in the serving.
slightly clove like, toasted malts with cinamon.
The taste and mouthfeel are the most appreciated aspects of this beer. Most of the flavor comes on the front or initial taste and finishes dry without any lingering taste/bitterness. Most importantly, this beer leaves my throat warmed and happy, reminiscent of a mulled wine or cider.

Appearance- Poured jet black with one finger of dark brown head that fades slowly, spots of chunky lacing stick on the sides of my tulip glass.

Smell: Lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, some burnt pumpkin, and then I get notes of chocolate, coffee, and more roastiness. Pumpkin character is there, but I get a lot of stout quality, impressive.

Taste: Brown sugar, burnt pumpkin and cinnamon come to mind. I get some nutmeg and allspice as well. Some chocolate character as well, but a good balance without overdoing the allspice as some pumpkin ales tend to do.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a fairly smooth texture. Alcohol well hidden and this drinks nicely without being overly cloying.

Overall: I thought this was fantastic. I really enjoy pumpkin in a stout setting so this hit home with me. I will definitely be purchasing some more!

Poured into a New Belgium goblet. Code on the bottle neck has 297 as the first numbers. Maybe it was bottled on the 297th day of 2013?

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch dark tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a center patch of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.

S- Intense clove spice with some cinnamon and nutmeg. Smells a lot like potpourri and it's so heavy that it borders on medicinal. All I can smell are the spices, no roasted malt or alcohol.

T- Allspice, nutmeg, clove, more allspice, cinnamon, sugar and more allspice. This could be the most spice-laden beer I've ever had. The dark roast does come through in the flavor but it's certainly not doing much to balance things out. The alcohol is quite well-hidden but it's not surprising since you'd be hard pressed to taste anything beyond the spice overload that's occurring.

M- Not as viscous or creamy as I was hoping. Medium-low carbonation and a full body.

O- It tastes good but it's just way too heavy on the spice. I'm slightly disappointed because everyone's been telling me this is one of the greatest pumpkin beers.

From my tasting notes on a 2012 bottle: It poured an opaque black with very little tan head. The aroma had a distinct spiciness over a sweet maltiness that reminded me of the liqueur BnB. There were hints of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg that were straight up pumpkin pie. The taste had those same spices but much more subdued and well balanced by the dark malty imperial stout. This was definitely a unique beer and the best Pumpkin beer and best Saint Arnold brew I have had.

Appearance. Pours a deep dark brown, black in the glass and topped with a thin, light tan head.

Smell. Ginger, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, and a little molasses. I might not be the biggest fan of spiced beers, but this smells good.

Taste. Wow, lots of molasses, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, a bit of dark malts and some booze.

Mouthfeel. Fairly full body, on the low side for sure. Low+ carbonation.

Overal. Nice spicing but a little heavy handed. I wonder if it will mellow over time. If I come across another bottle I'll throw it in the cellar a while.

22oz bottle poured into a dimpled stein. Bottled on 9/24/12.

A: Dark black with a thick beige head. Head retention is excellent and sticks around all the way down the glass with sporadic lacing.

S: Pumpkin puree and spices, cinnamon mostly.

T: Pumpkin is up front with cinnamon and clove stronger than I thought they'd be after 7 months. A layer of sweet chocolate mixed with roasted malt is there as well. Earthy hops and alcohol in the finish.

M: Nice, thick, and creamy. A bit thin for what you'd expect from an impy stout, though.

O: My cellar got a little backed up and it took a while to get to this one. It was probably better that way as I typically don't like the strength of cinnamon & spices in pumpkin beers when they're young. Will try and grab 2 this fall when it comes back out.

22oz bottle served into a Teku. Thanks to Steimie for this bottle

A - Pours a rich black with a thick light brown head. Swirl the glass and it looks a bit thin for a stout

S - Thanksgiving dessert in a glass here. Tantalizing smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, and chocolate. I want to keep this bottle around for awhile just to smell it.

T - Tastes just like it smells. Roasted malts and chocolate upfront and roasted pumpkin, clove, and nutmeg come into the mix to bring it all together. The pumpkin beer and stout aspects mix together pretty well here.

M - A bit thin for a stout. This is more porter-like in feel. The 10% abv is well hidden when it's cold. Comes out as it warms but doesn't overpower.

O - As a person who often doesn't care for pumpkin beers due to their overpowering spice, I thought this was well done! The stout notes and pumpkin pie notes mix very well together. This is definitely something I haven't had before. Kudos Saint Arnold.
