Poured in a Jester King Tulip

A: Inky black with a medium tan head, just like an imperial stout should be.
S: Nothing like any stout ever, ever! Smells of pumpkin and spices and reminds me instantly of thanksgiving, very unlike the roasty coffee malty smells of most imperial stouts
T: Odd, but amazing. It’s strong stout, smoothed and sweetened with pumpkin pie. The pumpkin is obvious but not overpowering, as are the spices (cinnamon? Maybe cloves?), but yet it’s still got that stout backbone and a little hop bite on the end
M: Smooth and velvety
D: Very very easily drinkable for a 10% ABV brew

Well, the hype on this one is well-deserved. This is a damn good beer.

Pour was solid black, tan fluffy head didn't last too long, but nice bits of lacing remained on my 512 pint glass.

The scent! Good God! Just amazing. If you're a fan of pumpkin pie, you'll think it's been morphed into this beer somehow. Getting a ton of cooked pumpkin, cinammon, nutmeg, graham cracker. Top notch.

Taste follows, not quite as much on the pumpkin at first...it's there of course, but the spices really blend nicely. The malt in this is just fantastic. Very rich, cinammon and sugary spices at first, followed by a bit of sweet pumkin pulp on the backend. Very drinkable. Hides the 10% oh so well. Just a little thin for a double stout, but that's nitpicking isn't it.

A homerun from Saint Arnolds for sure. I've been treated very well by this Texas brewery this year...the Endeavour and now this masterpiece. I can't wait to see what they have in store next.

WOW was the first word i said after a good sip of this beer. Great tasting, creamy, smooth and very delicious. The only thing is maybe it needed a bit more pumpkin taste to it but overall the spices and everything was really good. i would recommend anyone that got more then 1 store the rest for winter time ;)

On tap at Ginger Man Houston

A- Dark stout like looking beer. Served in a half pint with little to no head. No complaints, pours like I expected.

S- Complex. Roasted malts, dark fruits, pumpkin spice. Not as chocolatey as I was expecting but still nice aroma.

T- A bit of a miss for me. Lots of dark fruits, roasted malts up front. Bittering hops help take the edge off the sweetness. The pumpkin like spices were a mess. I tasted some strange amaretto like flavor that turned me off.

M- A bit too carbonated for style, possibly improper serving pressure though.

O- I was hoping for a mellowed out version of DR9. I'll report back and edit this post when I try the bottled version.

Edit: Update after having bottles from both 11' & 12'. I took some points off from the overall and mouthfeel. St Arnold makes a good effort on this one but misses the mark. The spices are not as balanced as some of the top tier pumpkin beers. The mouthfeel on 12' was lacking.

Poured from its bomber bottle, this beer is very dark brown- almost black- in color and a moderate pour is all that is necessary to produce a frothy head of foam that lasts and lasts. The nose on this beer is one of pumpkin bread with chocolate, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger, and other spices. It is a very enticing scent and you just know, with a prelude like this, that the beer going to be a good one.

St. Arnold Pumpkinator doesn’t disappoint in the taste department. The nose leads directly where you would expect, with flavors like pumpkin, assorted spices like those mentioned above, a little bit of chocolate, some coffee, some caramel, and dark malts with a slightly alcoholic finish. The full- bodied beer takes all that you love about stout and then adds pumpkin and spice to arouse the senses and leave you begging for more.

This dark, rich ale is complex and very interesting and I doubt any craft beer connoisseur will come away disappointed. I like pumpkin beers in general, but many of them are a little too light and sometimes even watery. There is no such concern with this dark malt beverage treat. The beer is full and flavorful and each sip grabs you and never lets go.

St. Arnold Pumpkinator is not an easy beer to find, but it is worth going out of the way to track it down and experience it one delectable sip at a time. It is probably the best imperial pumpkin ale I have ever tried and it’s a shame it isn’t sold with greater frequency. Grab some bottles if you can find them, and experience this award winning beer as part of your Halloween festivities.

22oz, 2011
Tired Hands wine glass

A: Pours a dark brown color. Reddish hues around the edges. Basically in a ring of light tan head around edges. But it's nicely carbonated. Seeing some tight small bubbles up edges. No as thick as I was expecting.

S: Definitely getting the pumpkin like smell: flesh, spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, clove), etc. Also, pulling some roasted notes.

T: Tip of the tongue, getting all the pumpkin ale flavors. That spice bill primarily. In the middle, you get more fleshy hints and the roasted grain notes to make it a stout. Not crazy big or full, carbonation makes it thinner. On the finish its dry. But pulling more of that dark chocolate bitterness and roast. Makes you remember yes it's a stout.

M: It's full but the carbonation helps lessen it.
