Poured from a bomber into a tulip. The pour results in a solid black color, with one finger of bubbly, dark tan head. The head doesn't linger for long, but does leave a little film on top, and a solid ring around the glass. There is no lacing to speak of.

The nose is full of dark roasted malts, smoke, a bit of chocolate, and some earthiness. The smoke is really evident here, and adds a nice dimension. This is complex and inviting. The taste follows those lines, but the smoke takes more of a backseat. There is dark fruit and chocolate, followed by some earthiness, smoke and full roasted malts. The finish is full and has a good presence from the roasted malts, but there is also a touch of bitterness left behind.

The mouthfeel is too light for my taste, I'm looking for a bit more here. There is also a lack of carbonation, even for a stout. A bit more body could really transform this into something more impressive. Overall, the flavors and aromas are spot on, and are very enjoyable. Besides the lack of body, I could enjoy this over and over. (1,055 characters)

First beer from the Sideswipe brewing I have tried and it is very nice. Pours thick black with a thin effervescent head that quickly dissipates to almost no lacing. Coffee and chocolate come through on the nose with a light hint of smoke. Light mouth feel with sweetness and smoke up front, a smoked milk stout if I might say so. Dark roasted grains, molasses, and bitter sweet chocolate dominate this beer with a smoked tinged aftertaste that is not overbearing. Very palatable and very welcome in the smoked category that can way too often go overboard into an almost bacon flavor. I would not only purchase this again, but would recommend it to milk stout lovers. Cheers. (674 characters)

22 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch light tan head. Head retention is good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like smoked and roasted malt, chocolate, and some dark fruit. For the most part, I think the taste is pretty much like the aroma. However, there's also some oats/grainy malt and a bit of nuttiness noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy, easy to drink and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I think this is a good smoked stout. This is the first Sideswipe brew I've tried, and now I'll have to try the others! (616 characters)

650ml bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Dark brown with a one-finger latte-colored head
S: Cocoa, roasted malts, a hit of smoke, molasses and caramel
T: Not nearly as complex as the nose. Cocoa, malt and a hint of caramel but light/simple overall. There is a noticeable smoky note on the mid-length finish
M: Medium-bodied but no complexity other than the smoky finish
O: This seems to have pent-up promise but the complexities on the nose don't carry through anywhere else. No flaws and worth a try just nothing to impress (524 characters)

Seven words or less: Smoky, creamy, worth trying this new brewery.

This is my first every attempt at a review. Overall, I thought this beer was very solid. It poured an inky black with a small head.

Nose was mostly malty with the smokiness also shining through.

Taste followed the nose pretty closely. I thought the mouthfeel was pretty creamy, and pretty pleasurable.

Overall, I liked it, and I'll give the other beers from Sideswipe a try. (447 characters)

It says "smoked" on the bottle, and sure enough, it is, though subtlety. This is still part of my tasting tour through the smallish breweries of central Ohio. This is one of the good ones.

It's all black with just a touch of fizz, but they are nice little bubbles. The aroma is a little more faint than I would prefer but hints of the smoke, not necessarily roast but smoke, which is better, of course.

Unlike the aroma, the taste is very much in your face. It's a great big balance of sweet malts, bitters, and that smoke taste. It definitely works. The aftertaste lingers nicely and remind you that there is alcohol in this even if it isn't 10%.

This is a well made, very civilized stout. Recommended. (707 characters)

Elegant Hoodlum pours black with a finger-thick tan head that doesn't last long.

The aroma is malty, chocolaty, and contains a hint of coffee and smoke.

The flavor starts malty with a smoky, roasted grain note to it. The finish is mildly bitter.

The smoky elements are subtle and contribute to the flavor rather than dominating it.

It's an excellent example of the stout style. All the elements I look for in a stout are here, and it's not an overwhelmingly bitter version of the style, which I also appreciate about it.

I look forward to having this beer again, and to trying other Sideswipe brews in the future. (632 characters)
