Our pioneering IPA is a free spirit who ventures off the well-worn trail. She scored our Brewmaster a Silver medal at the 2001 Great American Beer Festival, and this beauty has grown up a lot since then. Pouring hazy orange-amber with a wispy head, our flagship IPA has Cascade, Simcoe, and other American hops, and is double dry hopped with Citra hops. Go nose in and delight over aromas of pine resin and tangerine, tropical bursts of midevening sunshine. The flavor profile is full-bodied—citrus, grapefruit, caramel, orange peel, bitter but with sturdy malt support. Hoppalachia will take you to the peak of the mountains feeling like you have finally reached your goal! Welcome to the land of Pioneers.

I believe this is my new favorite beer. I can't say this any better than they do...

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Deep reddish amber hue shows a good clarity, decent head retention ... lacing is pretty thin. Caramel, some citrus zest, ripe fruit, and toffee in the nose. Smooth and a little slick, medium bodied. Lots of hop flavor, citrus pith, rind, pine resin, blonde tobacco and fresh cut grass. Hint of caramel, breadiness from the malt, and some buttery flavor that distracts the palate a bit. Not half bad, that butter tone needs to be cleaned up and the hop profile could use some work. All in all a decent IPA.

No BOD. Clear copper pour with a touch of garnet. Normal head volume, quite good retention and normal lacing.

Very good nose of light mixed citrus and orange zest over a light slightly sweet caramel note.

Light medium body that is very smooth and hints at being slightly slick. Outstanding carbonation / body balance that has just enough effervescence to open it up. The middle is nicely effervescent and the finish is prickly.

The flavor profile is very good and is quite tasty but lacks the depth and complexity to be considered outstanding. It is laid back and also lacks the intensity for an IPA but would score outstanding as an APA. The flavor has two components - orange and malty caramel - neither of which command center stage but deliver a world class balance. Bitterness is light for the style and is zest based. This really is a very tasty brew that I will buy again but cannot score as outstanding in the IPA category.

Bottle poured into glass. Orange, Amber color with modest head that fell away. Descent carbonation is visible allowing oranges, grapefruit and hops to rise to the nose. Grapefruit and hint of orange evident on front of palate leaving a lingering crisp bitter taste at finish. Enjoyable!

L: Pours brilliant gold amber under a 3” foam cap that lasts 4 minutes. Produces a thick lattice of lace. S: Initial grass gives way to citrus and fruit. Hop aromas are medium, malt aromas are medium low. T: Attacks with begins with fruit flavors seasoned with herbal hops, citrus, grapefruit and light caramel. Starts lightly sweet, drying out on the finish with a light astringency. The bitterness is moderately high and lingering. Clean fermentation character. F: Very creamy, medium light body, medium carbonation. O: A slightly sweet easy drinker.
