Got these from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.
From a bottle into a small snifter
EBC: 280
EBU: 80
Aged in Jack Daniels barrels
Drank this one before the Longmorn and Ledaig versions.
APPEARANCE: Looks similar to the Longmorn version. A clear brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, light tan head with great retention. Bistre brown in color, clear, with no carbonation evident. Head fades to a half wisp and ring. A ring remains leaving a few dots of lacing down the glass. Good head, but a very light and thin body for the style. Averages out.
SMELL: Lots of oak, whisky, light earthy notes with leather and hints of peat, which was a little unexpected. A touch of caramel as well, but very little base stout to be found.
TASTE: Lots of oak up front with some piercing alcohol as well. Whisky at the swallow with a medium but lingering finish of whisky, oak, peaty flavors and leather. Too barrel heavy and the alcohol is a touch sharp. Very little base stout as well.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy and smooth on the palate, goes down smooth with enough weight and finishes a bit mouth-coating. A hint of heat lingers as well. This is the best part of the beer, and generally leagues ahead of the majority of Dutch craft brewed imperial stouts.
OVERALL: Not bad per say, but not quite there. The feel was way better than most others in the region here, but the base stout was too weak and the barrel rather harsh in the booze department. The look was also too light for an imperial stout. An interesting beer and better than the majority of other attempts around here, but still not something worth running around for. This was my least favorite of the three.
