Not really that pretty of a beer. Its murky looking. It's at about an 85% cloudiness it seems; some parts of the glass seem like they want to be clear. The head was tough to coax out, and had no retention.

There is a predominate dark fruit aroma; its not fresh, but rather rotty and odd. There is also some cocoa here and there as well as grass hop notions.

A little bit of the cherry fruitness that I attribute to a good dubbel is here, but again, its an old and rotting fruitiness. Odd nips of cocoa and root beer or cola come around. The finish showcases more of those mushed up cherry notes, a little bit of cherry stem and some alcoholic notions.

Carbonation isn't running rampant, but it still manages to be very sharp. Aside from that the body does nothing. There's no good rich fullness to it, once you swallow its all gone.

I'm an Abbey Ale purist and this is another fine example of American brewers not having a damn clue how to brew them. Not a disgusting beer, but way, way off the mark.

A - Pours amber with a minimal amount of quickly dissipating head. No. lacing.

S - Aromas of sweet caramel malt and maybe a bit of raisin. Very subdued. Not picking up any of the spice notes that I enjoy from this style. Still smells pretty good though.

T - Taste is similar to smell, .ostly caramel malts and some hint of raisin. Not getting much else.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a nice amount of carbonation.

O - A drinkable brew, but not a great example of the style.

A- Light brown with a weak tan head, a little hazy, not great but appetizing enough.

S- Cherries, brown sugar and raisins mingle with soft earthy components. Pretty appetizing.

T- Very much like the nose but with added subtle spice in the finish. Awesome.

M- Medium body and creamy soft carbonation lends to this one being a great sipper.

D- Pretty smooth but balanced, could have more now and will definitely have again. Good beer.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle with no freshness date, Flying Fish logo on the label but nothing about the beer.

Appearance: Reddish amber with a light chill haze, better than decent off white lace which sticks on the glass like a champ.

Smell: Clean on the nose with quick aromas of roasted malt, light medicinal phenols and a burnt raisin fruitiness. Light caramel and bready aroma also.

Taste: Real smooth mouth feel lead with a creamy and subduing crispness. Medium body from the ample dose of malt. Big chocolaty malt flavour that has levels of roasted and toasted malt and flows into a light medicinal flavour. Roasted malt bullies the delicate palate around too much though does not get into any kind of burnt flavours. Bitterness of the hops rides the tide of roasted flavours to balance, malt flavours flex more middle to end. Nutty yeast complements the roasted flavours, upfront yet vague fruitiness with clean alcoholic esters. Drying effect and flavour take over the after taste with remnants of the medicinal phenols as well as some fruitiness.

Notes: Not a bad try, a tad too much roasted malt flavour with a close to over kill phenolic character that seems too clean. Say it again, not bad but not close to a real Belgian Dubbel whether abbey or trappist or just from Belgium.

12 oz bottle, no freshness dating. Pours dark russet brown, low carbonation, minimal white, tiny bubble film, leaving some lacing. Makty candi sugar nose. Smooth malt body, sweet, with candi sugars, notes of rum, raisins. Thin body, a bit watery for a dubbel. Sort of a "Dubble lite" Pleasant stuff, but on the lite side as far as body and flavor go.

This is from a sampler case from FF. Expiration date clearly marked on the case!! YEA!!

Pours a beautiful, clear, amber with a one finger head of cream colored foam. The head falls quickly to islands and a ring. However, some lacing is observed throughout the drink. Carbonation evident.

Aroma is strong toasted caramel malts, some phenolics, not much else. Doesn't really have that Belgiany smell, you know? Alcohol comes through as it warms.

Flavor is pretty damn sweet. Is this a brown ale? Toasted caramel, medicinal a little bit. Some attempt to balance the sweetness with some hop bitterness. Warmth from alcohol is present, as well. Doesn't really have that Belgiany taste, either! Aftertaste is sweet/hot.

Mouthfeel is sweet, with soft carbonation across the tongue. Long finish is lip-smacking sweetness.

As for drinkability, as a Belgian Style Dubbel, it fails, but as a strong, I don't know, Newcastle Brown Ale, it's pretty damn yummy! It even LOOKS like Newcastle. Maybe Flying Fish should call this something else. It would definitely appeal to lovers of brown ales.

Unusual Belgian Dubbel, dark color with a persistent light foamy head. Aroma of fresh cut walnut wood. Taste is nuttiness and caramel with an aged wine barrel finish. Not much sweetness or bitterness, just a light pleasant nutty taste. Payday bar comes to mind.

Appearance: Very much brown ale esque with a ruby brown hue and tan head leaves nice scattered lacing not bad. Aroma: Biscuit malt sweetness low hop presence some undertoned fruit notes produced by their house yeast not bad. Taste: Toasted malts biscuit sweetness rolls nicely not a bad dubbel just not a true dubbel for me finishes very sugary and cereal in nature not like it's Belgian brethran at all. Mouthfeel: Becomes cloying midway through a bit sticky and syrupy with a rough carbonation in the mix wow not a fan of this one. Drinkability: Medocirty in some of it's glory right in front of me not a dubbel definitely an American Brown ale.

12 oz bottle of re-formulated(?) 7.2% ABV ale called "Abbey Dubbel". Consumed from a snifter near the best by date on the label: 30 March 2013. Pours a nice orange-mahogany color, clear despite a tiny amount of sediment, The head is small, short-lived, and leaves little lacing.

Aroma/Taste: nice and true to style; sweet with plenty of dark fruit; brown sugar, toffee/caramel. The flavor largely follows the nose. Still sweet, and a tad too sweet, but not as sweet (or yeasty) as the nose indicates.

M: not bad but a bit too asteingent and thin.

O: Not up with the finer Belgian dubbels but certainly respectable and far less expensive in the US

Aroma and start are sweet and yeasty (ribena and apple skins that have been lying in the sun for a while), some plums, grapes and a touch of nuttyness and caramel. I dig the malts, caramelly, nutty, slightly smoky and roasty, plummy, some grapes, light acidity and tartness. Belgian yeast is obvious, nice dry finish to counter the sweetness in the start. In a wierd way i wasn't expecting too much, but i was pleasantly surprised. I dig the lingering nuttyness in your mouth after every sip.

A- This beer has a big clear garnet body with a thin wisp of big bubbles making a head. There is a sea of big bubbles popping to the surface.
S- This beer has a clean aroma with a soft dry sugary malt note ans some honey malt notes come through as the beer opens up.
T- This beer has a soft dry malt flavor with a bit of a dark malt note and some toasted qualities. The soft dark caramel taste comes through in the sweet finish.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a big fizzy bite in the finish. There is no alcohol heat noticed.
D- There is not much flavor to this beer with a hint of malt and no real yeast characteristics.

This Belgian style dubbel is brewed right nearby in Cherry Hill, NJ. Flying fish is a classic brew co that has some good stuff on tab.

Can't hate on the dubbel ale. Its a bit stong registering at a 7.0% but thats a Dubbel. It had great mouth feel and a descent amount of carbination.

#BOTG 76!

Poured from bottle into New Belgium tulip glass. Pours a dirty brown rain water color, very little head retention. some head pools into the middle of the glass. I guess it looks like a Dubbel, but not one of the better examples. Smell- caramel syrup, raisins, a buttery aroma as well. Decent, but points detracted because it reminds me of what melted milk drops smell like when in a movie theater next to buttery popcorn. Chemically in some ways. Taste- chocolate cherry cough syrup. raisins, butter. This is a stylistic miss, and the chemically syrupy nature of this is present even more. This is not a good dubbel, below average. Mouthfeel is syrupy thick. Not good. This would be a strike out.

Old notes, not dated - Maybe Jan. 09.

Poured into a chalice-style goblet, sporting a semi-tan ring of head which dissipated quickly back down into minimal lacing. Color is a ruddy brown hue. Smells of fruit and toasted malts in the nose are most evident breaking down into aromas of banana, caramel and some yeasty esters.

The taste is similar to the smell with those dark malty flavors taking the front seat followed up by some mild sweetness. As it warms in the mouth you get a bit more burn of the alcohol and can pick out it's light carbonation, or lack thereof, contributing to it's soft feel on the palate.

More easily drinkable than you might expect from a Dubbel as it has a fairly mild body.

DATE TASTED: May 2, 2014... GLASSWARE: Chimay chalice... OCCASION: another Friday begins... APPEARANCE: dark, opaque ruby body; off-white, slightly creamy head that settles quickly; nicely lacing as the glass drains; a handsome bottle, as well... AROMA: Plum! sweet, sugary confections--some caramel and toffee--the raisin also presents late--not a plum/raisin guy myself, but this does deliver what it promises... PALATE: medium-bodied, chewy and significant--a formidable body--still drinkable without need of resolve...TASTE: big, sweet and dry--a wine's base that marries a brown ale's flatter profile--plum and malt strike an attractive balance... OVERALL: Its 7.2% ABV is well masked, as a wine-like profile is apt to do; a nice offering from the Flying Fish brewery--a great nightcap to a good day.

Flying Fish- Belgian Style Dubbel

Appearance- Copper/ dark red with a medium head of tiny bubbles. The head quickly dissapated.
Smell- bittery with some spices detected.
Taste- starts off sweet with a slight spicy taste and ends bitter and yucky.
Mouthfeel- watery turning to bitter.

Mirky pale brown with a 1-2cm bubbly tan head. Low retention and no lacing.

Dark malty sweetness, candy sugar, dark fruit and yeasty bread on the nose.

Flavor is a little bit of a flat version of the Dubbel style. Doesn't have near the depth and complexity of many actual Belgian dubbels. Mild dark fruit notes and Belgian candy sugar are pretty much the extent of the flavor.

Full bodies with med-high carbonation.

Overall this a pretty much just a boring representation of the style. It's not bad overall if you haven't had great Belgian dubbels.

Pours reddish copper with a head that leaves, like now. No bubble action at all. Smells a little hoppy, taste starts sweet, like carmel, and finishes sort of bitter fruity. Not a bad beer, but I would prefer a little more substantial action. Can't quite put a handle on it, but seems to come up a little short.

Love the super-hazy, fog-choked bronzed brown liquid, which hosts an off-white head that, while not huge, clings to the sides of the glass like a tree frog.

Decent enough smell, a mingling of mineral, alcohol, sweet spices, Belgian (or Belgian-esque) yeast, and light notes of milk chocolate. There's something lingering that's kind of strange, a damp, musty smell somewhere between basement and seaweed.

Flavor is indeed dubbel-ish, bringing in all those basic traits detected in the smell (mineral, alcohol, spices, yeast, chocolate) with an additional herbal component, fruit (generic fruit, because I can't come up with a particular one this reminds me of), a dab of black tea, toffee, and a slightly minty kick that I'll guess is the hops.

Just slightly over-carbonated for my liking, but not an impediment either. Still soft enough, and with a slickness that makes it go down very easy.

Maybe not 100% authentic, but then this is a New Jersey dubbel, and they've come up with a cool twist on the style. My third Flying Fish offering, and the brewery is "good" to "excellent" in my book so far.

Some fruit in yeast, yeasty and bitter aftertaste. Underachieving Belgian. Modest carbonation and medium mouthfeel. The soap must be from their washing of glass. Had at The Standard Tap. I am not sure I will ever love flying fish, but I must try again elsewhere.

this dubbel pured to a really nice brownishish amber color with a nice frothy head that quickly dissappeared. Malty aroma with a hint of fruit.

Taste wise this didn't quite measure up to a true dubbel. A good try it just seemed to be missing something. Maybe a little too thin in body for his style.

Clear, russet brown with a fair-sized off-white head that's lightly creamy. Although it doesn't hold real well, it does leave a good collar and some light lace. The aroma offers dark fruit, caramel malt and a subtle spiciness. The flavor follows suit with some additional candyish sugariness and more spice. It's very well balanced and the alcohol is nicely cloaked. The body is medium with a very fine carbonation giving it a lightly tingly, creamy mouthfeel. It finishes with a gently lingering sweet maltiness. It's been argued that this beer is too light for the style, but that's not true. It ranks admirably side by side with many Belgians. A very nicely done, and quite enjoyable beer.

Man, I think this is pretty on the mark for the style. Reminds me a lot of Chimay Red, but without the natural carbonation. It has a dark fruit and herb aroma with more of the same in the flavor. It finishes with a touch of hops and the slightest bit of alcohol heat. I think all that's holding this back is the carbonation. Otherwise you've got yourself a dubbel here.

Poured a finger of head on a deep amber colored body.
The aroma is a sharp caramel, barnyardish and dark fruits.
The taste is grainy, caramel and mild dry bitter finish. It has a watery beginning.
The texture is fairly smooth with low to moderate carbonation.
It's a fine ale but it could use a bit more in the flavor profile.
