Great taste with citrus, cloves and roasted malt. Pleasant smell with fruity aroma. But leaves a little not so great aftertaste leaving one with a feeling that this is not the real thing. Still a great substitute for the real thing brewed in Belgium. Offers a great variety and contrast to other types (IPA, Stout etc. ) when having multiple drinks in a single sitting.

M: Body is a bit light for a dubbel, also the carbonation is a bit high.

O: Its a decent dubbel, I would recommend it to a friend.

Unusual Belgian Dubbel, dark color with a persistent light foamy head. Aroma of fresh cut walnut wood. Taste is nuttiness and caramel with an aged wine barrel finish. Not much sweetness or bitterness, just a light pleasant nutty taste. Payday bar comes to mind.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter—serving as a replacement for my broken goblet.

A: A deep-reddish amber hue, close to a mahogany, but not quite. An off-white, slightly khaki colored one-finger head starts off looking nice, but eventually fades to nearly nothing. A legion of pen-dot sized bubbles remains on top with a ring of equally tiny bubbles around the edges. One or two instances of lacing left down the glass.

S: Some under-roasted malts with hints of dark fruit and some breadiness. Hints of caramel and brown sugar underneath.

T: Lots of roasted malt upfront, giving this a slightly burnt profile with some chocolate-covered raisin flavor underneath. A little bit of nuttiness and earthiness from the yeast comes through in the finish, but is short-lived due to being overtaken by those burnt characteristics.

M: Medium-bodied with a crisp carbonation. Flows smoothly across the palate, with a moderately creamy texture. Nothing to write home about, but definitely above-average drinkability.

O: Flying Fish definitely didn't make a bad brew here, but it's just slightly underwhelming. The roasted profile is a bit too pronounced, which makes for a very burnt/smoky experience. This might be good at the pub, or paired with some food, but it didn't exactly impress me as a sip-at-home brew. Worth a try; not worth a re-buy.

Best by 12/17/13.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruit, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with toast and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that still tastes fine almost 2 months after the best by date.

A previous reviewer cited 12-15 dollars for a 6-pack. I get this for 7.99 at my local store. Definitely not sessionable(okay, so, I may drink two or more, but this will get you drunk). I drink them warm, mid-to-high 50's in to the low 60's. I love the grainy, malty, almost wild rice flavor I get. Somewhat nutty, but completely smooth and balanced. The alcohol is way too sharp when chilled in to the high 30's and low 40's, so the low reviews are reasonable if serving at low temperatures.

My bottle says 7.2% but it's not bourbon barrel aged. Paid 3 dollar for the single.

A - A nice deep cherrywood brown with a 1/4 inch of opaque colored head that pulls back to a thick sticky lace ring.
S - Very fruity yeasts and somewhat apricot preservative smell. Not much hops must be mixed in well.
T+M - Not much sweetness or fruity flavor from this. Body is light to medium and the taste is overall crisp with a well hidden ABV. If anything it does have some dark fruit flavor mostly raisins.

Overall this beer is easy to drink but because of the high price (12-15 dollars a six pack) it's really not worth the revisit or session. Pity because their "Exit 4" triple rocked my taste buds.

[Suggested Glassware: Trappist Glass]

The pour was a cloudy medium chestnut brown with a small (less than 1 finger) off white frothy head that quickly diminished, leaving behind a light scattered film and having fair spotty lacing.

The aroma had a bold fruity ester (raisons and prunes) right off the bat along with a dark bread malt and a musty Belgian yeast with a touch of brown sugar and a mild vinous scent.

The taste was malty sweet with a slight yeast presence from the start and pretty much was the case throughout, with the finish being rather fruity and mildly tart with light alcohol presence at the end. The flavor faded quickly off the taste buds with just a hint of dried fruit and a mild alcohol warming sensation left behind.

Mouthfeel was almost medium in body with a mildly dry texture and a prickly carbonation.

Overall this was a very enjoyable yet mild Dubbel, with an avid aroma and a somewhat subdued yeast intensity in the flavor...

Pour is a deep dark brown, with some hints of chocolate and amber. No real head.

Nose is pretty soft. Has a little roastiness. Nice gntle sweet malt and caramel notes. Little bit of oak.

Taste is pleasant and mild. Nice fig flavors, some green raisin. Little bit of bready sweetness on the finish. Little too mild and soft overall though.

Feel is on the medium thick side. Leaves a nice coating.

Decent Dubbel. Not epic by any means, but pleasant. Could definitely drink a couple on a cold night.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear ruby color. It really is a beautiful pour - too bad it's clarity makes me a bit wary. The head isn't too impressive, either. It's a one finger light brown affair, without much in the way of retention or significant lacing. The pretty-looking body ticks its score up a notch or two.

S: The aroma definitely suggests something bready and peppery. Beneath the (bog-standard) yeast character, there's a character of fruit esters, and some *very* sweet caramel. I can't say I'm finding the nose to be impressive...

T: There definite wisps to suggest it's a dubbel - for example, it opens with a fairly bready tone - but even on the first sip, I know this one isn't going to be Rochefort 6. The finish is almost generically sweet: there really isn't much in the way of defined character. It doesn't seem like that much of a problem, but defined subtlety is what can make or break a dubbel - and that generic finishing sweetness (along with the lack of depth) keep it in Mediocreville.

M: Pretty thin, and also pretty light in terms of carbonation. The wet finish leaves behind a lot of lingering sweetness, but this doesn't really harm the drinkability too badly.

O: Not much of a proper dubbel, but not BAD. I'd recommend this to a beginner drinker: the yeast profile is both subdued and very basic. That, and it's easy to drink. It's lowish score stems from the fact that it's vapid and unfulfilling to someone who enjoys this style done well.

Picked this up a few weeks back, as this was one of the few offerings from Flying Fish currently available that I had yet to enjoy. While this beer had a lot going for it, it was clearly not as good as the Dubbels from Belgium that this would inevitably bound to be compared to. This was just a bit lighter in mouthfeel and not as complex but on its own, it stood up fine and was strong enough to remind me that it was still not to be taken lightly!

The pour to this was a dark brown, bordering on plum. The head and aroma were sufficient but not overpowering and there was hardly any lacing to be seen. A fair amount of candied sugar and dark fruits would be found in the taste but it was muted relative to its counterparts from overseas. Not a very full mouthfeel either and there wasn't a lot of bread and "chew" to this as well. This could have been more complex and only faint plum and currant could be detected before sliding down with the rest of the watery consistency of each sip. The yeast was hard to find as well and only a hint of sugar stuck around long enough before I took another swig of this.

There was enough alcohol here, to be sure but not enough to make me think that this was purely a Dubbel. It just didn't feel like a Trappist Ale and almost felt like an Imperial Brown Ale, because of the stickiness and plain nature that this had. This just didn't quite measure up but Dubbels are full, complex beasts while this was more of an introductory beer to that style. If you've never had one of these before, this would be good to start with since more than one could be enjoyed in a sitting without be overwhelmed. Had this warmed me up a bit, I knew that it would have been more on target.

Pours a deep copper brown color with a white head.
Aroma of doughy bread, caramelized malt and Belgian yeast.
In the taste, malty sweet with some light dark fruits and earthy hops. Nutty and hoppy, definitely has a raisin, plum, pecan thing going on. Firmly malty, but nicely balanced. Caramel, raisin toast, almond, pretty complex dubbel. Medium bodied feel with a fairly aggressive carbonation. Overall, a classic American version of a dubbel, and frankly, better than most.

So, I poured this from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter. The color was great, but I could tell from the pour that this was going to be a thin dubble. I know there's no solid numbers for ABV for the Belgian styles, but 7.2% seems respectable. The beer looked like a Coke in terms of color and viscosity. The nose was OK- nothing really jumped out at me other than the yeast, but the taste was pretty decent- dark fruit (figs, raisins). It was very carbonated but thin. Would I have this again? Probably not.

A: The beer is clear mahogany red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin off white head that quickly died down, leaving a few small patches of bubbles in the center of the glass and a collar around the edge.
S: Light aromas of dark, sweet malts are present in the nose along with notes of dark fruits.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also seems to have some slight hints of spices towards the finish, which negate nearly all of the sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate with just under a medium amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes a little lighter compared to other dubbels and doesn't seem to have enough flavors of dark fruits.

Pours dark reddish brown with fast settling foam. Raisin, plum nose. Sugary. Malty sweet cola taste. Rich dark fruit flavor. Black cherry flavor. Firm carbonation. A touch sweet but good flavor. Pretty good all around.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Clear, dark amber with a thin white head. No lacing on the glass.

Smell - Dried fruit: figs and prunes.

Taste - Starts off sweet, middle is dominated crisp carbonation and smoky flavor of plums and figs. Finishes dry with a lingering smokiness.

Mouthfeel - medium-light bodied. Enough carbonation to give it a bite.

Overall - an easy drinking dubbel that's a bit too light for the style. But right now I'm drinking it on a hot summer night and it's simple and refreshing enough to be a "lawnmower dubbel."

A- Pours a dark brown, amber highlighted body, with a cream 1/4" off white head. Just a few speckles of lacing and the retention is only barely there.

S- Dried dark fruits, some spice. A little unexpected roast aroma, but it added a nice unique complexity to the nose.

T- Light malty sweetness, caramel and a little fruity.

M- Smooth, slightly creamy, and mild carbonation. An easy drinker.

O- This was a pleasant surprise. Definitely not at the same level of real Belgians, but a solid Dubbel from Jersey? This would be good for the beginning Dubbel drinker. A smaller price tag to sample the style.

Poured a finger of head on a deep amber colored body.
The aroma is a sharp caramel, barnyardish and dark fruits.
The taste is grainy, caramel and mild dry bitter finish. It has a watery beginning.
The texture is fairly smooth with low to moderate carbonation.
It's a fine ale but it could use a bit more in the flavor profile.

12 oz bottle of re-formulated(?) 7.2% ABV ale called "Abbey Dubbel". Consumed from a snifter near the best by date on the label: 30 March 2013. Pours a nice orange-mahogany color, clear despite a tiny amount of sediment, The head is small, short-lived, and leaves little lacing.

Aroma/Taste: nice and true to style; sweet with plenty of dark fruit; brown sugar, toffee/caramel. The flavor largely follows the nose. Still sweet, and a tad too sweet, but not as sweet (or yeasty) as the nose indicates.

M: not bad but a bit too asteingent and thin.

O: Not up with the finer Belgian dubbels but certainly respectable and far less expensive in the US

Pours with very little foam but nice dark brown/amber color. Smells like bitter fruit. Mouthfeel pretty good with weak coating but nice carbonation. Overall with 7.2% alcohol it's fairly easy to drink and nothing spectacular about it. Average but good

not much aroma, although i think i'm getting a candy-something in there...

definitely flat. easy to drink for a 7.2%, but like most of theri beers i've tried, there is a 'fishy' taste to it. i just cant get into much of the stuff from this brewer, but it's not bad. maybe it's just psychological....

Pours a golden orange color, light haze, soapy head. Scent is quite yeasty and peppery, lacing many other qualities of the style. Taste follows suit... Mostly yeast and spice, lacking firm malt presence and fruitiness. Moderate carbonation. Weak sauce... Nothing too bad, but nothing really good either.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice. Pours a ruddy mahogany with a thin off-white cap of foam on top. This fleets away quickly, leaving just bits of lace on the glass. Aroma of fig, raisins, yeast, syrup, wet hay. Moderate body bolsters this beer. Not overly carbonated as some tend to be. Rich syrupy finish.

Dark fruits pervade. Fig, plum, toffee, bits of ginger, rounded out with a touch of spicy yeast. This isn't overly "Belgian" by any means. Definitely an American stab at it, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A good representation, and a tasty cap to my evening. I think this would make a good one to draw someone into these Abbey-styles. Nice work, FF.

Glass - Tulip

A - Amber/brown color with just a touch of haze. The head was about 2-fingers worth and dissipated within a few seconds. Lots of carbonation can be seen. No lacing.

S - Softer aroma's going on. Caramel, toasted bread, cherry. Reminds me of fruit cake a little bit. Slightest bit of herbal hop in there. I got a touch of alcohol as it warmed.

T - Lots of brown sugar, cinnamon, biscuit, caramel. Cherry and alcoholic notes warm the palate and throat. I pick up a bit of raisin as well. It finishes with almost no bitterness, and lingering fruit cake like flavors.

M - Medium bodied with a smooth airy like feel. Carbonation is moderate.

O - I think this was a good offering from the brewery, and a decent shot at the style. Definitely an introduction to the style sorta thing to me. Tasty and satisfying, with a great price tag. I'd have it again. Cheers!

a: A dark red-orange color, clear body and lots of bubbles. The head is thin but leaves a pleasant ring atop the beer.

s: The aroma is sweet with dark sugar, coriander, banana and clove.

t: strong and pleasant malt base, toasted malts mix well with the yeast to give a consistent sweet & reduced banana flavor with a vegetable quality. Finishes clean with very little bitterness.

m: medium body, clean and semi-crisp. Very nice and approachable.

o: Not bad, a straight-forward representation of the style.
