Not a very good IPA by any means. Had out of a keg at pub 199. Don't like rating out of a keg that much because there could be issues with the lines, the keg, etc. However, our table did have some pitchers of bmc and they tasted like what they were supposed to be.

This beer poured a deep dark amber color. Probably the darkest non black ipa I've seen. Not much of a smell, maybe some malt. No hop presence at all. Taste was pure malt bomb. I got no hop flavors at all. Did not have any more from pitcher. Asked waitress if I even got the right beer. (553 characters)

The pour is ok, kind of a burnt yellow with nothing all that remarkable.

The smell is much the same, nothing really stands out. Weak hop presence.

The taste is ok. It's a light malt and hop presence and nothing all that memorable about it.

Kind of fizzy feel and overall this is a one and done beer. I'd only have it again where my other options aren't all that good. (403 characters)

DATE TASTED: June 13, 2015... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... OCCASION: Just returned from Liberty Day fireworks... APPEARANCE: light, bubbly body, with a hint of obscurity; white head is creamy and leaves lacing that resembles hedgerows; thick and consistent--a promising start... AROMA: immediate slap of caramel to the nose; some yeasts that blanket the hops with an earthy, funky distinction; what does slip through is soft citric hops, approximating lemon zest... PALATE: vivid, active on the back tongue; a balanced, medium-bodied experience... TASTE: subtle spice and balanced malts/hops make for an understated profile initially… caramel malts outstrip the hops, making this a sweeter IPA... OVERALL: as the label establishes a more British approach, with an easier drinking, maltier version of what the hop head is expecting; melon and flowery hops reward late—this is a solid beer with a decent ABV%... (917 characters)

Pours an orange gold, coppery color with off-white head. Floral notes, light citrus, and some malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a balanced out malt bill. Would have liked more of a hop bite on the finish. (227 characters)

Look- nice, golden brown IPA.. Solid head that dissipates after a bit.. Lacing covers throughout, good looking. Smell- nice, pine, a bit typical for the style. Taste- good, you pick up the floral notes.. More bitter than my favorite IPAs.. Strangely, comes off a tiny bit watered down toward the end of the glass. Feel- a bit of a dry finish. A good, not great IPA. (365 characters)

12oz bottle in a stemmed tulip glass.

A- Poured a slightly hazy golden-orange color with a 1-plus F head, off-white in color, and hung around, leaving lots of web lacing.

S-Rich malts and floral hops. There's generous citrus hop aroma to serve as a reminder that it's an American made E IPA. A note of sweetness from the alcohol. Very robust.

T- Malty with floral and spice hop flavors. The bready taste comes first. It's quite clean and very well balanced. The flavors blend.

M- Generous malt body with a touch of alcohol strength. Medium feel overall. Some hop bite but generally dry on the end.

O- A very good beer. As an E IPA, it has extra citrus flavors that aide its drinkability and enjoyment. Yum. (713 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a SAM ADAMS pint glass. (and in subsequent reviews into tulips and others. This beer is consistently solid E IPA. Must try.

A: Pours clear, bright amber, apricot color with a thin white head that fades pretty fast but laces moderately.

S: The aroma is classic English IPA and MUCH better than Brooklyn East India. It balances fruity and malty with the hops in background.

T: The taste is oustanding, and it follows the fruity malt smell, but then transits into floral hops bitterness. The balance gets better as it warms. Fantastic finish. Refreshing, juicy, yet dry. Almost salty, definitely a sea beer.

M: Smooth and very crisp, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, very clean finish. Very creamy yet dry, great mouth feel.

D: Very tasty, keeps you coming back for more. Great food beer, great E IPA. One of the best. (864 characters)

Pours clear Amber copper with thick creamy white head well retained, smells of citrusy floral hops slightly malty, tastes of cooling hop florals with malt notes, light mouthfeel smooth finish. Notable difference in east coast iPad rather than west coast (253 characters)

12 oz bottle into a teku glass.

Appearance: Pours a clearish copper color. The head is three fingers high, and off-white in shade. Retention is quite good, and the dense texture leaves behind a lot of lacing on my glass. (4)

Smell: Seems rather muted. A bit of crystal and Maris Otter malt is backed by some vague grapefruit hints. That's it. It does seem to become bolder as it opens up, however - still, the aroma leaves me non-plussed. (2.75)

Taste: It's the maltiness that ends up being the initial flavor, bringing waves of caramel, toasted bread, and even cracker. The back end brings some apricot, flowers, earth, marmalade, and even some grape jam. That last note actually gives this one a unique twist compared with other English-style IPAs. Again though, my problem lies in how mild it is. It's easy to drink, but rather boring - even with that slight grape jam flavor, none of the flavors pop. (3)

Mouthfeel: Crisp and easy to drink, the maltiness does little to obstruct the palate with lingering sweetness. Nor does it rely on a lot of carbonation, either. I have to say that the malt backbone is done fairly well here. (3.5)

Overall: Nice lunchtime beer, this one. It's kind of insipid, which means I won't be seeking this out over better examples of the style. I can see other, less discerning drinkers really enjoying this, though. (3)

3.05/5: A decent IPA for beginners (1,392 characters)

I had this on tap at Joe K's Brewhouse in Harrisburg served in a pint.

The color is golden amber with pale cream thin head with fine bead. The smell has an English yeast ester with subtle pine from the hops with light sweet malt scent and hint of toasted grain. The feel is good with moderately bitter quality with semi-sweet middle moderate carbonation with mild bitterness in the finish which is on the dry side.

The taste is not bad with slightly yeasty flavor up front with mild bread and light malt toastiness which carries over to a slight tinge of pine/herbal hop flavor in the background with mild spice as it finishes semi-dry. overall this is not a bad beer, but it seems kind of by the numbers English style to me -not my favorite of the style. (759 characters)

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a clear amber color with a two finger head of off-white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a heavy level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is nice and interesting aroma overall. It has a sweet aroma of tangerine and caramel mixed with some melon smells of honeydew and cantaloupe. Along with these aromas are some nice hop smells of a grapefruit citrus as well as a subtle aroma of a floral and grassy hop.

Taste – The taste begins with a malty and bready flavor mixed with some sweeter flavors of caramel and tangerine. The caramel fades quickly, but is replaced by more tangerine and some other sweeter flavors of light fruits. The hop is very light upfront with just a hint of grapefruit. The grapefruit grows a bit stronger as the flavor advances, but never really grows all that potent. A little bit of a grassy and floral hop flavor come at the very end, mixing with the rest and leaving a rather sweet and malty lightly hopped flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is average. A bit thicker of a body would have been better for the malty and fruit flavors all while helping bolster the hop flavors of the brew.

Overall – The flavor was alright, but not really all that hoppy and sorta weak for an IPA. Nothing too outrageously good here. (1,471 characters)

A- poured a deep golden color with thick white frothy head that left a nice ring of lacing throughout. I don't see it as being hazy, I see it as ALMOST clear. Very nice looking beer.

S- citrus and hops that's what I smell. Citrus and hops.

T- fairly sweet in the begining like malt and grapefruit? Not real sure but I taste some citrus followed by slight bitterness of hops. Good for an IPA but not my favorite style. Well balanced for IPA

M- very smooth medium bodied beer. Excellent. Only complaint is the dryness.

O- well brewed Well balanced IPA. One of my favorites in this style of beers. (601 characters)

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Golden color with a slight haziness. Thick, frothy, off white head that dissipates to a lacing that lasts throughout. Looks great.

Smell: Smells sweet at first, then comes with floral hoppiness.

Taste: Floral and citrus at first, then the hops pick up, not overly bitter like some IPAs, a little sweet.

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated, medium body, get a nice sting of alcohol that is not overbearing.

Overall: A nice IPA, it looks great and is easily drinkable. Recommended. (513 characters)

12oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Pours a pristine golden color with a slight haziness from tiny speckles of floating sediment. A creamy off-white head is short lived as it eventually dwindles to a silky smooth cap, leaving decent amounts of abstract-looking lacing down the glass. Head retention leaves a bit to be desired, even with the nice lacing.

S: The scent is a bit weak with very light floral hop aromas and a bit of citrus zest. Lots of caramel malts underneath as well, if my sniffer doesn't deceive me. This would have scored higher if I didn't have to nearly dip my nose in to pick up what was going on.

T: Very malty up front with a bit of breadiness. The hop bitterness comes through in a very weak wave that just barely washes over the malt. It seems a bit backwards for the style. Very malty with some understated hop and grassy bitterness in the finish. Some alcohol spice tends to linger in the aftertaste.

M: Medium-full bodied with a fairly average-level carbonation. Lightly creamy and flows silky smooth across the palate. Lots of drinkability here.

O: This one straddles the line of good/okay. It's not unenjoyable by any means, but it's just not what you'd expect from an IPA. It has a strong maltiness and a very restrained hop presence. It drinks extremely well and tastes good, which makes this a prime contender for a session ale at a bar, but it's not something I'd pick up again for the pleasure of home-consumption. Good beer overall, slightly weak by IPA standards. (1,509 characters)

12 oz bottle into tulip glass. My second beer from Flying Fish, the first being their Pale Ale. I like this one a lot more. This could almost stand up to most American IPA's in balance and taste. Goes down a little too smooth with not enough bite. Having said that, I enjoy this beer a heck of a lot for a Jersey brew. (318 characters)

Another IPA from Flying fish always a treat! Got this for 3 bucks for the single at the house of 1,000 beers.

A - Somewhat hazy bright amber brown with just a 1/4 inch of head at pulls back to a mild lace ring. Somewhat sticky lacing.
S - Huh mostly hoppy for an English IPA. Very sweet malty rather than herbal or tea like. Citrus and mango pine blast.
T - Herbal hop bitterness to the start then gets mildly sweet, then it gets herbal and a piney zest hop finish. Haven't had an English IPA this all over the place but its good.
M - Light to medium not as heavy as others take on this style I dig it.

Overall I am usually impressed with most flying fish offerings and this one is pretty damn good. Not the biggest English IPA fan but this is drinkable. (756 characters)

HopFish pours a golden color with a small lacing head. There is a sharp but sweet floral aroma. The taste is similar, a sharp hop bite, but with a sweet finish. Nice full flavor, and full body. Overall its a nice IPA, some good flavors, but harsh finish. (254 characters)

HopFish IPA is a clear amber/yellow color. Pours a small/moderate sized light tan head with okay retention and average lacing. Has a sweet, bready smell with floral hops, overall not much aroma.

Taste starts with floral hops and bread, then sweet very ripe fruit with caramel malt. Has average mouthfeel and carbonation with a good deal of creaminess and a bit of slickness.

A little too sweet for my tastes, but not bad at all. (430 characters)

Sell by date of 02/05/14

Appearance - Pours a fairly clear golden orange with an off-white finger width head. Fair retention leads it a broken layer of suds across the surface. Lacing is spotty, with decent stick.

Smell - Earthy and floral hop aroma, along with a bready malt sweetness. Fruity esters. Hints of sourness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Citrus and floral hops upfront, along with some woodiness and a generic bready backbone. Well balanced. Fruity esters lend to a faint sourness near the finish. Hops touch on grassy bitterness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair to lively carbonation. Near velvety smoothness, and goes down with ease before a dry finish.

Overall - A solid English IPA. The sourness is a bit odd, but not unpleasant. I could stand to drink a few more, but nothing I'd want to drink on a regular basis. (855 characters)

Bottle > Mason Pint

A - Pours a nice gold color, thick fluffy two finger head, thick lacing too, looks top notch.
S - Aroma is really bland, a little biscuit malt, some minor tropical fruit, a little pine, nothing outstanding in the way of hop aroma.
T - Taste is a let down too, some nice sweet tropical notes up front, but they fade fast to a biscuity dry malt, a tinge of bitterness. Nothing outstanding for sure.
M - Watery for sure.
O - Eh, a decent english IPA at that, but nothing to go after. Its just drinkable. (524 characters)

12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

A--Nice head that dies down quickly and leaves a little lacing. Clear, golden coloring. Looks appetizing.
S--Maltier than expected for an IPA. Light hoppiness with some citrus aromas as well. Smell made me interested in going further.
T--Sweet. Much more malty than hoppy. Not at all like the standard hop-bomb IPAs out there. Actually reminded me more of an English ale than an IPA. Not bad, but not at all what I expected.
M--Heavy, especially compared to what I was expecting from an IPA. Thick & creamy, again more like an English ale.
O--Not bad, but it doesn't meet my expectations for an IPA on several levels. (653 characters)

Poured chilled, chez White

A: crystal clear; good head retention; light toffee color; low-medium carb action
S: light hop aroma
T: a lot more happens on the tongue than on the nose; saaz hops?; hop profile is more herbal than anything else (e.g., citrus); semisweet; not boozy; well balanced in a particular lager-like direction

A: The beer is crystal clear light amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose along with some hints of citrusy and herbal hops.
T: The taste has flavors biscuit malts, toasted malts, herbal hops and earthy yeast along with a light amount of bitterness and hints of citrusy hops towards the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and has a very good balance between the malts and hops. (732 characters)
