12oz. brown bottle, no date information.

Cloudy glowing orange gold. Short sand colored head of mixed size bubbles with some staying power that eventually settles leaving a spray of dust. Steady streams of carbonation hit the surface. Light orange blossom and caramel aromas mixed some rind notes are present, but nothing overly IPA-distinct. The flavor starts with a light citrus rind element supported by a bit of malt sweetness. Finishes citrus juice – orange and lemon – tart and sweet with a minimal amount of hop bite. A lemon juice tone overlays it all, and the finish is short, thankfully, as this became less drinkable as it warmed ever so slightly. Medium-light body with a flaccid mouthfeel, the carbonation makes this barely tolerable. Utterly unenjoyable, with a preponderance of lemon rind/juice flavors. A disappointment. (841 characters)

Two finger light tan head over a nearly clear light copper-orange liquid. Smells almost nothing. Woody musky hop grass, lamost like bad rye.

Taste mild hop bitter with model hop flavor, all amid a sea of malt sweetness. Soured caramel and cheesy hop aged. Not the most pleasing experience. Mouthfeel is thick, which would be good to the flavors around if they were pleasant. Incredible lacing on the inside of the glass. (421 characters)

I thought this beer was way too malty for an IPA. Am I missing something? I thought it looked great, carbonation was fine, had a nice head, but when I was looking for that kick of hops...nothing was there. Did I get a bad case??? I don't know, but until then, I'll assume that this brew is too malty and short on the hops. (322 characters)

They forgot the taste in this one!! Opens and pours to almost perfect hue, nice sudsy head. Bring to your nose, smells decent, not great, maybe hope for some substance as it goes down your pallet.

But...

Then...

You...

Actually...

Drink it...

And it dies a quick death on the taste buds. For a split second it tastes like it has potential. Then
NOTHING!! No taste, no citrus, no floral, nothing.

Oh well, it was worth the try. I guess. No wait, no it wasn't. :( (469 characters)

Thanks to NJpadreFan for this extra.

12oz. brown bottle poured into a pint. No dating.

A: Pours a golden amber with good visibility. 1 finger of rocky, slightly off white head forms and turns to a fluffy pillow on top. Some patchy lacing.

S: Very subtle. Nice spring flowers after a rain and some citrus peel resins.

T/M: Has a strange tartness to the bitterness. A kind of warped citrus flavor that has a lemon peel taste. Malts are unpleasantly sweet with a raw grain taste and more of that strange bitterness. Body is a bit too light and carbonation is fairly high.

D: This one just didn't do it for me. Thanks anyway, Alan :) (634 characters)

Amber color, white head, decent lace. All good.
Aroma, belgian yeast, banana, no hops. Label checked, not a belgian ipa. Smells belgian.

Taste, tastes like a belgian east coast ipa. Hops nowhere to be found. Notice here it says English ipa, doesn't say that on the label, in fact, calling itself hopfish makes me think it might have, well, hops in it, but no.

This isn't a bad beer, it just fails to deliver as advertised. If this said "Belgian IPA" I would rate it higher, as it would be actually tasting like it was intended. The yeast was really the biggest flavor component here, bready, grassy.

Hides the alcohol ok. (626 characters)

Thanks to Kwest159 for this beer!

Aroma:Some maltyness in the nose, and just a little citrus hops.

Appearance:Pale amber in color. OK head, but poor retention.

Taste:I didn't like this beer on the first sip, because of the astringent hop flavors, but it grew on my after a few more sips. The hop flavor is medium to high, with assertive hop bitterness. The hop flavors are floral and earthy. The malt provides a slightly sweet backbone to this beer. This beer becomes more dry on the midtaste, almost sour. The beer also plays well with the style with it's minerally aftertaste.

Mouthfeel:This medium-light bodied beer does have some astringency, which detracts from the mouthfeel. The carbonation is good.

Drinkability:While this beer plays true to style, it's a tough one for me to like given it's aggressiveness. There are some flavors in here that taste a little off to my palate. (889 characters)

Not a very good IPA by any means. Had out of a keg at pub 199. Don't like rating out of a keg that much because there could be issues with the lines, the keg, etc. However, our table did have some pitchers of bmc and they tasted like what they were supposed to be.

This beer poured a deep dark amber color. Probably the darkest non black ipa I've seen. Not much of a smell, maybe some malt. No hop presence at all. Taste was pure malt bomb. I got no hop flavors at all. Did not have any more from pitcher. Asked waitress if I even got the right beer. (553 characters)

Poured into a pint glass.

Dark honey colored amber. One full finger of head when receded left some scant lacing. Sweet malt, biscuit and caramel in the nose. Maybe even a touch of tea too. Man.... This is a malt bomb to me. Huge turnoff. Comes across pretty creamy and smooth. Caramel like taste. Hop bite is non existent. Not at all what I am looking for. (357 characters)

This brew poured a light amber with average head which faded before I finished. It had a bit of a malty aroma. Where's the IPA hop nose? Absent.
The taste was grassy and malty with some caramel, and a hint of something sour.
It lacked the bitter finish of an IPA.
I'd rate it higher as an English IPA, but not much. (315 characters)

Bottle shared by Bobby.

A: The beer pours a clear orange color with a finger of white head.

S: Not what I was hoping for here. Butter and popcorn up front with a strong breadiness to it as well. Hints of floral hops and a little bit of orange peel to it. Not a very good aroma.

T: Orange peel, grass, and some floral hops up front, making the flavor slightly less awful than the aroma. Pale malts and bread with a lemony flavor and perhaps even a light tartness.

M: Medium in both body and carbonation.

O: This was just really not a very good beer. Pass. (559 characters)

Appearance - Amber in color, with slight head out of the bottle.

Smell - Probably the best feature of the beer: a citrus aroma with good amount of hops and malt.

Taste - Sadly, the aroma doesn't translate well into the taste. The taste lacked any bite, and it didn't have any flavor hitting the palate.

Mouthfeel - Mild carbonation, but not much else.

Drinkability - You could have a few in one sitting. However, I wouldn't try it again. (443 characters)

Aromas of a muddy peach first come to mind. Very stagnant herbal quality to it. The taste turns to a slightly flat malt flavor that has a maybe some oxidation, paper quality to it. The medium mouth feel also lends it self to a sweeter quality to the beer kicking the much needed bitterness to the side. It finishes with a pseudo dryness in the middle of the tongue but leaves a earthy aftertaste on my palette. Overall It's ok in my book. (438 characters)

on tap at manny browns in philly

Pours a clear golden color with some yellow hues. A white head fades out slowly with plenty of patchy lacing and film.

Scents of biscuit malt and grapefruit hops, some rind and fruit sweetness, but not overbearing.

Burst of hoppy citrus and bready malt. Somewhat sweet with biscuit and butter. Grapefruit and orange with rind and citrus juice. Finishes a bit dry and watery with some bread crust.

Medium body, higher carbonation, drinks okay. Pretty boring flavor, would like to see more of a hop profile too. (549 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into a pilsner.

crystal clear deep orange with an inch of foamy white head that leaves tons of stringy lace.

sweet caramel malts in the aroma. not a ton of hops, but there's a touch of grapefruit.

medium-high carbonation with a medium-light body. plenty of sweet malts with a slight bite of piney, grassy bitterness. an incredibly average ipa. (373 characters)

Local brewery for me, but I was really disappointed. Really weak hop flavor for an IPA. Really not on the caliber of the better IPAs. Not a "bad" brew, but there are so many better IPAs out there that this one is made pretty much worthless. (276 characters)

From 12/03/11 notes. Had on tap at some restaurant out by Desales University in PA while visiting my sister.

a - Pours a hazy deep orange color with one inch of fluffy white head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of earthy notes, very light citrus hops, and light bready malts. Very bland, with only a hint of hops. Not great, pretty average.

t - Tastes of earthy notes, light floral notes, bready malts, grains. Again, very bland, and not much in the way of hops.

m - Light to medium body and low to moderate carbonatioin. Easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty average IPA. Nose had the faintest smell of hops to it, while the taste had none really at all. Not one of Flying Fish's finest and not one I'd seek out again. (732 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into an Imperial Pint. I don't see any date or info on the bottle.

Thanks go out to NeroFiddled for yet another extra in a trade!

A - The pour was highly effervescent and mainly clear with no action. The color is a good golden-yellow/light pale amber orange. The head is bone-colored and rose up quickly to lower just as quickly. A bit of nice lacing.

S - The nose is fairly mild for an IPA. A mediocre helping of citrusy hops. A touch of grapefruit and honeydew melon with a well-balanced malt backbone. The hops are pretty mild. I hope I didn't wait too long on this one. :/

T - The flavor exhibits the same lack of hops that the nose does. They are too mellow. The honeydew and grapefruit aromas are traded for plain honey sweetness and a very mild hop splash at the end. Not really bitter but still dry. Has a very tiny cidery hint to the aftertaste.

M - Just a bit fizzy for my liking, it tingles the tongue and throat close to a soda feel. Light-medium in body and rather bland, it finishes dry with a cidery pucker.

D - I wish I could have had it sooner as I'm sure it only would have been better than this but it's not awful. It just needs a bit of work to get up there. The hops are really lacking, otherwise it's drinkable in this form. (1,272 characters)

I pour a copper color liquid into my flying fish pint glass. The carbonation is like a soda. The bubbles cling to the slide and travel up the glass. The head is decent for a very short time and then disappears into nothing.

The smell is lacking. Where is the citrus? The floral? It smells sweet but artificially so.

The taste ..a little bitter, a little hoppy with some maltiness coming through.

This beer seems almost flat to me which is surprising because I know its fresh. It JUST came out in bottles a few weeks ago and the brewery is nearby.

I really wanted to like this beer since it’s a local brew. I even had a second bottle before I decided that I trully do not like it. It just doesn’t cut it for me.

There are many other IPA’s much better. I wouldn’t bother with this. (801 characters)

A- Just under a inch white head on a crystal clear golden body.
S- Bigger grass hops but still has some grapefruit and light pine in there too. Pretty big malt body comes through too.
T- Follows the aroma with the bigger malt body and the grass hops. Almost to big in malt department. The grass hops leave a little bitterness but nothing to big at all. Not much pine or grapefruit comes through like the aroma hinted at.
M- Medium body with medium carbonation.
D- It is alright. I probably wouldn't get it again but am glad I got to try it. (540 characters)

Thanks to kennyO for this one via Beer Powerball.

Dispensed from a 12oz bottle into a snifter. Extremely clear, light bronze in color with a slightly tanned head of about one finger in size. Some sporadic lacing.

Aroma seems to be more of an English version of the style. Pretty big on the caramel maltiness but there is also a nice bit of earthy hops. More malty than hoppy and more earthy than citrusy.

More of the same in the taste. Really fruity. A bit sweet. Earthy tones. Slight alcohol taste.

Pretty thin on the mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Dry in the finish. More sweetness.

This wasnt my style of IPA. A decent beer I guess but thin and sweet. Thanks for the chance Kenny. (688 characters)

Decent beer, but definitely not an American IPA in my opinion. The smell was of fresh respberries, and the taste was so syrupy sweet.. tasted like raspberries over and over. Then I looked at the beer menu and saw that they had a raspberry beer on tap. Perhaps the glasses aren't properly cleaned in between customers? I would try this beer again, but not because it was great - just to see if it was really raspberry or not. (424 characters)

Received in trade from mdaschaf, thanks for the opportunity!
Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a huge bubbly white head that shows great retention and lace. Smells of earthy and citrusy hops, with a bit of bready malt, some mineral aromas, and a bit of yeasty funk. Taste is a nice compromise between malt and hop. Earthy citrus meets bready mineral water and a hint of yeast funk. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Meh. This one is ok, but there's either some wild yeast working in this bottle or the beer was kept on the yeast too long after fermentation. No bottle dating so there's no telling how old this bottle is. (664 characters)

12 oz bottle into a teku glass.

Appearance: Pours a clearish copper color. The head is three fingers high, and off-white in shade. Retention is quite good, and the dense texture leaves behind a lot of lacing on my glass. (4)

Smell: Seems rather muted. A bit of crystal and Maris Otter malt is backed by some vague grapefruit hints. That's it. It does seem to become bolder as it opens up, however - still, the aroma leaves me non-plussed. (2.75)

Taste: It's the maltiness that ends up being the initial flavor, bringing waves of caramel, toasted bread, and even cracker. The back end brings some apricot, flowers, earth, marmalade, and even some grape jam. That last note actually gives this one a unique twist compared with other English-style IPAs. Again though, my problem lies in how mild it is. It's easy to drink, but rather boring - even with that slight grape jam flavor, none of the flavors pop. (3)

Mouthfeel: Crisp and easy to drink, the maltiness does little to obstruct the palate with lingering sweetness. Nor does it rely on a lot of carbonation, either. I have to say that the malt backbone is done fairly well here. (3.5)

Overall: Nice lunchtime beer, this one. It's kind of insipid, which means I won't be seeking this out over better examples of the style. I can see other, less discerning drinkers really enjoying this, though. (3)

Poured a decent sized, dense, cream colored head that couldn't quite hold onto the glass. Transparent, radiant copper colored beer requires patience to reveal any sign of life. Faint aroma reveals a touch of crisp hops. Huge bicsuit malt flavor barely lets the hops breathe. Hops are funky, a bit of metallic and tea-like. This continues into the finish without a drop of bitterness Body is light, and the mouthfeel is just a touch froathy. For some reason this reminds me of the Otter Creek Copper Ale, but I definitely wouldn't guess IPA. (540 characters)
