750ml brown bottle with no freshness date.

LOOK: Stout black, brown head that subsides

SMELL: Sweetness, roasted grain, charcoal, faint ocean, mineral, mild molasses, black currants, nougat, cocoa powder

TASTE: Full-ish body, long smoothness, charcoal, earth, salt, roasted grain, coffee grounds, faint ocean, black walnuts, modest hopping, warming alcohol, bunt raisins, dry finish

A really great stout with the bonus of being of the Export style and oysters added for is pretty mellow but enjoyable depth. I'd love to seem them bring this one back.

Pours a dense dark brown color with absolutely no light coming through. Medium size light brown head with good retention. Lacing is limited to dot of lace on the glass.

Aroma is mostly rich malt with a touch of chocolate. Fairly rich.

Taste is smooth maltiness with some chocolate and a little hops bitterness lurking in the background. Some people noticed a briny (the oysters) taste but that wouild be stretching for me.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. Little or no alcohol bite. A good tasty stout/

12oz bottle (Best Before Date: 1-09-15) into a snifter glass...a day shy of 6 months old.

A- Pours pitch black with about 1/2 finger of a soapy, khaki head dissipating rather quickly. (4.0)

S- Aroma is comprised of coffee, milk chocolate and a hint of berry. The oyster mineral/brine component is definitely present and quite dominant, yet melds well with all the others. (4.75)

T- Milk chocolate is perceived first followed by a mild berry-like sweetness. Coffee astringency is soft which quickly succumbs to a briny and dry finish. No alcohol is detected. (4.75)

M- Despite 7.5% ABV, the body is rather thin. Although it poured with a conservative head, a good amount of creamy carbonation was left behind, further accentuating Exit 1's dryness on the palate. (3.75)

O- This is one of the best examples of the style, largely due to the fact that the contribution from the oysters are absolutely present in all aspects of the beer: nose, flavor and mouthfeel. I would, however, enjoy Exit 1 a bit more if it possessed more substantial (i.e. chewy) body...mashing at a higher temperature would achieve this result, but more malt would need to be used to achieve the same ABV. (4.5)

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Label says Use By: 01-09-15.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 3/4 inch light brown head that retains well before fading to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a large center patch of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a thick solid ring behind.

S- Heavy dark roast aroma with accompanying notes of molasses, chocolate and a bit of booze.

T- The dark roast hits hard and deep but the chocolaty sweetness that's also there provides a good balance. Additional notes of caramel, vanilla and even some light pecan. The briny-ness from the oysters is only noticed in the aftertaste and sort of rounds out the bitter/sweet duality of the rest of the profile. Pretty drinkable for the ABV

M- Dry, very dry actually and there's a slight chalkiness from the roasted malt. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- This has been a want of mine for a while only because, when the Exit series was first rolled out years ago, I wanted the Exit 1 entry just to add to my bottle collection because I'm from Delaware. Never found it the first time around and they stopped making it for years. When I heard they were bringing it back on the market, and in 6-packs no less, I had to get my hands on it. Found a sixer when I was visiting home and, come to find out, the beer itself is really good too!
