For our sixth stop on our journey to celebrate New Jersey, we travel to Exit 13. This exit is probably best known for it’s view of the Newark airport, but it is also home to the Port of Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest in the world. Elizabeth was also New Jersey’s original capitol. Many food products come through the port, including the Belgian chocolate we’re using for what we’re calling an import/ export stout.

This fuller “export style” stout gives a sturdy base for the rich chocolate flavor. More than 600 pounds of Belcolade chocolate went into this brew. A mix of imported and domestic malts are highlighted by roastiness from dark wheat. An Irish ale yeast and Pacific Northwest hops combine to create an excellent dessert beer as well as one to share in the cool weather with friends.

750ml. A nice dark black pour, a little over a finger of head layered in color from light brown to light tan at the top. Marginal lacing.

Roast and lactose sugar. Some chocolate and cocoa.

Taste is far more roasty than the nose would lead to believe. Some caramel and coffee. Fades into heavy cocoa. Cocoa and coffee in the finish, maybe a hint of some hops. Excellent.

Coating not quite creamy mouthfeel. Maybe just a tad thin. No alcohol. Have no problem finishing the entire 750 myself for dessert and then some time after. This is really top notch, somewhere between a foreign and a milk stout.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a small light brown head. Smells of sweet chocolate and coffee notes. Tastes of chocolate, but slightly watery. Beer is light/medium bodied, goes down smooth, good carbonation. Overall, a good beer.

Looks great but has a really odd funky (not quite sour) aroma and flavor going on. If I didn't know better I would guess this beer has brett in it. Whether or not it's actually infected, something is definitely off with this beer.

Serving 12 oz bottle, poured into stemmed glass. L: Very dark brown / blacking color. Decent carbonation. S: Roasted malt and sweet chocolate. T: Smooth stout, hint of chocolate bitterness on the end. F: Medium bodied, not too heavy. O: Another solid offering from Flying Fish. I'd drink again.

Look: Very dark - not even 1 ray of light comes through. Great 3 finger head coming from a 12 oz bottle / moderate-heavy pour. Head retention is really good.
Smell: Slight metallic and fruity smell. Some chocolate and malt come through. A bit of charred oak and grains waft up as well.
Taste: Some upfront hop bitterness, more-so from charred grains. Some malt and chocolate, but no where near what I expected from the title of the brew. Some coffee, toffee, plum, caramel. Tastes like a brown ale with chocolate. Fades out with a campfire smores aftertaste.
Feel: Decent full bodied brew. Pretty thick, but maybe could have used a bit more fullness.
Overall: Nice beer. Quite a bit more dry than I expected. I expected more of a dessert beer with lots of chocolate syrup and caramel. Still a great dessert beer and flavorful. Not disappointed.

Another offering from the variety pack, and this one is not too bad after all...

I thought I had seen some black liquid stouts in my day, but this one might quite possibly be the blackest of them all. The pour reveals a nice thick tan head and though it has little staying power, what remains is good lacing down the glass. The scent from the brew is a light blend of chocolate and distinctive stout taste, even some smokiness for effect. I found this to be creamy and smooth on the tongue, but was distracted even when warmed by the carbonation - it was lightly there from the beginning and never dissipated to a lower level at any point. There were certainly chocolate notes to go with the smokiness I smell - a plus. However, there wasn't much more distinctive about the beer. Certainly a solid brew, from a brewer that can crank out some good stuff.

Dark chocolate stout. Tasty, but not a spectacular stout.

A. Black with a short light-tan head.
S. Chocolate, roasted malt. Rich and slightly sweet aroma.
T. Taste is surprising. Orange and pineapple notes up front, which then mix with the chocolatey flavors, which works nicely. Aftertaste starts sweet with caramel, vanilla, and chocolate, then combine with some piney bitterness.
F. Feels medium bodied with a nice smoothness yet nicely carbonated.
O. Pleasantly surprised. I experienced a lot of different flavors in this one. Cheers!

DATE: January 6, 2017... OCCASION: Friday of a short week needs something strong... GLASSWARE: Guinness pint... pours a dark black body supporting a two-finger light brown head, creamy and foamy like a sponge... nice peat, toasted malts, slight citrus as promised, lactic acids, and earthy coals--not to mention a bit of chocolate... a gritty, grinding abrasive texture on the tongue that vibrates down the throat... a warming smoothness replaces this by mid-glass... at this point, beautiful lacing paints a cirrus sky... chocolate takes center stage, with secondary notes of phenol, scotch-like peat, and light lemon zest... vanilla, lactic milk, and earthiness that produces a lingering sweetness... chocolate, yes indeed--and the "export" stress is appropriated here, with a staunch yet creamy experience at its end... a great example of this style, and a powerful one at that...

12oz Bottle to tulip glass.

LOOK: dark black, a little thin looking, but with a nice big frothy beige head.
AROMA: malted milk balls, 'nuff said.
TASTE: chocolate is at the forefront. Some ash, barley.
FEEL: full bodied, with decent carbonation. A touch of silt.

This is a pretty nice chocolate stout. Just the right amount of sweet
