12 oz bottle, "best by" New Year's Eve 2013, served in a lager glass.

Pulling this from the refrigerator, I'm not too excited to have selected a red ale. But wait, it says "West Coast hoppy style red ale" on the label, and releases a fine hoppy aroma upon uncapping, and looks great in the glass, due in part to the creamy and durable tan head. Well, the flavor and feel do not disappoint either. Crisp but soft carbonation in a medium bodied ale. Good, moderately complex mix of hops over a solid malt base. Mildly bitter aftertaste.

O: a really fine smelling, hoppy red ale. Worth seeking out.

Purchased Oct. 12, 2013, Enjoy by January 20, 2014. You might expect to hear about the nice, clean burnt orange color. You might expect a comment about the nose of citrus and pine with a mouthfeel and flavor that work well in this red ale category. But the reason Red Fish moved to the higher echelon of ratings has to do less with the lacing, aroma and veiled perception of ABV, and more to do with the eventual higher temperatures this wonderful brew reached during my tasting time. The robust, full malt flavor comes through to meet the previously mentioned hop character to make, for me, an absolute favorite, reminiscent of the flavors and aromas of brew days in my garage. To die for. I recommend letting this one settle, then enjoy.

Poured into pint glass.

A - poured a reddish amber with a nice, frothy, slightly off white two finger head.

S - Pine, and a tad bit of tangerine and tropical fruit..not much at all. getting bread like sweet malt as well behind the hops.

T - well, this is definitely piney, especially in that after taste. getting a lot of malt.. pretty juicy tho. up front i barely get any hops im almost getting like a tea flavor. herbal in a way.

M - not too much carb, very drinkable tho. insanely creamy.

overall this beer was average to me.i was expecting something like sculpin ipa....pure west coast citra style... too much malt for a west coast style IPA in my opinion. i was expecting huge citrus flavor. the description on the bottle didn't match the taste or smell at all. If they didnt emphasize the west coast style on this beer i may have enjoyed it more...i went in with a citra hop bomb mindset.

Red Fish is a mohagany/brown/red color and is pretty clear. Has a small head with poor retention and low lacing. Smells of bread, caramel malt, and piney hops.

Taste starts with caramel malt, then piney hops, with a bready, grapfruit, tangerine finish. Crisp and hoppy afertaste. Average body with above average carbonation.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Classic textbook looking amber, with some good hinting reds. Large frothy white head three fingers tall with lots of clumping and settling to a thick puck.

Tasty smelling malts, cinnamon and spices also. Spritzy and flavorful smelling with a chewy sense to match.

Palate hits the right notes nicely. Good light toasty malts, hinting a little kind of toasty bread crust to match. Spicy with a hint of herbality hop action to match, and some chewy leaf like hops to match. Light bodied with the malts subsiding on the palate a bit.

Overall pretty solid basic but enjoyable amber. For 7% abv it's also hardly noticeable at all.
