The long-delayed eighth stop on our multi- year trip brings us to, coincidentally, Exit 8 and celebrates what puts the “Garden” in Garden State.

To celebrate Exit 8, one of our big farming areas, we’ve brewed a beer that uses a lost local ingredient: chestnuts–and a popular current one: local honey. This full-bodied hybrid Belgian-style brown ale brings forward a nutty character from the chestnuts, accented by the flavors of honey, roasted barley and oat flakes. There’s a nice spiciness from the Mt. Rainier hops while Chinooks add a touch of pine. Fuggles and Columbus round out the hop profile.

Poured from a 25.4 wine bottle into my Great Divide tulip.

Appearance: Beer pours a very deep, dark brown. When held to the light there are some hints of a lighter chestnut brown around the edges of the glass. Two fingers of light mocha head. Very long head retention and moderate lacing.

Smell: Some nutty notes, roasted malts and a definitive hint of sweetness from the honey. Perhaps a little too sweet in the nose for me.

Taste: Sweet and chocolaty. Good roasted malt notes. The chestnuts and honey are both present but they aren't the biggest tastes. Finishes with some Belgian yeast, mild hops bitterness and a touch of warmth from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a low level of carbonation. Some heat from the alcohol.

Overall: Another interesting beer from the Flying Fish Exit Series. A lot more roasted malts than I was expecting. The Belgian yeast isn't as prominent as I was expecting either. It drinks more like a straightforward brown ale than a Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

Taste is dark and sweet chocolate with nuttiness and dark bread. Tastes more like a complex porter. The alcohol is well hidden. I could have a couple glasses.

11/19...pours very dark brown with deep offwhite foam, speckled with tiny brown dots. Robust nutty nose, buried sweet honey too. Sweet bready malty caramel, open, smooth and mellow with a honey sweetness all over it. Quite nutty. Lingering sweetness, subtle alcohol.

DATE TASTED: December 8, 2013... GLASSWARE: Victory Hop Devil nonick...OCCASION: preemptive drinking of the first delayed opening of this school year... APPEARANCE: jet black body; thick, spongy, brown head... AROMA: sweet honey with nutty, funky tones; toasted malts suggest the farmlands which the beer seeks to celebrate; some light hops... PALATE: BIG, full-bodied,, cold-storm warming presence; the opposite of the thin, iced tea consistency akin to the usual brown ale...TASTE: somewhat sweet, honeyed start; fleeting oat and grain late; in between. rather clean and brown--some vanilla hints as well--and then the nuttiness takes over and the beer really becomes chewy;overall, a complex beer to chew and swallow...OVERALL: supporting the locals always feels right, and though this bomber requires excess cash--don't most of them?--the taste matches the altruism of giving; big, bold and flavorful, it's what a brown with attitude should produce...
