Was actually gearing up to head out when I got the dinner invite, and Philly was quickly Phorgotten. To be fair, I was looking for an excuse so as to bag, and Philly’s overall selfish & inconsiderate farawayedness was an easy out; the late of the day just reinforcing my position. Had been looking to revisit for some time and well, here I am...
Muni Meter fed on Grand and shorty blocked up. I’m early, where can I set up and beer? ‘U’ shaped black slab bar 3 sides around, with a wood trim, panel base, & a foot bar; seating for 18 on wood backed burgundy leather chairs. Large brick pillar in the middle of the island but they navigate around it just fine. Steel rack on this side of it with wine, booze, & glassware shelved vertically. A cupboard piece sits below with more of the same. A unit to the rear houses large glassware including the giant boots displayed atop, and an open kitchen behind that. Food is being cooked; it’s happening right there (pointing).
Panel windows up front, they look like they could open but I’m not sure. Wood slat vertical lowers below beige (maybe) painted walls with large mirrored panels on both walls opens the place up some. Mounted lamps between the panels here and a shelf running the length atop with books, pottery, pieces, & pics. Bar counter space widening seating for 4 on one wall with slight counter space further down. Wide slat wood floors and an old pressed tin ceiling.Large filament bulb glass lamps tracing the bar & bulb ball lamps across the floor.
Oh fuck, the far wall is not mirrored. It actually extends into a side room. Seriously, I need to see the eye doc, I’m effin’ blind, but to be fair, that room wasn‘t there last time I was. Far brick wall in the side room with minimal décor of light prints. 3 tables there seemingly for larger parties; 1 vertical and a pair horizontal banqueted up, and also a bar counter ledge adjacent. I’m eyeing up that table for 8; it’s empty now and can be ours if late ass Ben ever arrives, although to be fair, if they’re late in any capacity, you know Bethy owns that. And a dozen or so tables in the main room up front and wrapping around one side to the rear; some have shared benchings or not, others on chairs; all of them in burgundy leather like the one I’m sitting on, barside.
6 taps from a bar tower on the unit fronting the kitchen; Hofbrau Summer & Dunkel, Weihenstephaner Hefe, Radeberger Pils, Mahrs Zwickelbier, Stiegl Lager. All priced in a .3, .5, & a litre stein. I drank shortys of the Mahrs Zwickelbier, Hofbrau Summer, & Dunkel.
And 8 bottles, mostly Germs & Austrian (Jever Pils, Schneider Hefeweisse & Aventinus Doppelawesomebock, Ayinger Brauweisse, Samichlaus), plus a few seemingly out of place American craft entries (Allagash White, Lagunitas IPA), and an N/A (Clausthaler). And a dozen+ wines by the glass if that’s your thing.
We are appin’ on pretzels with spreads and landjager (pickled plates). I contemplated the beef goulash for about .21 seconds and went with the Wiener schnitzel again. Yes, again. As in, I had it last time out and it was most totally WIN, again. Served with new potatoes all parsleyed up (yeah, I don’t want them old potatoes), green salad, and Preiselbeeren (which is a Lingonberry jam that does). Forked everybody else’s ‘cause they encouraged me to do so; tried some of this, some of that. All the goods happen here; most notably the Austrian meatballs & beef goulash (which was kickin’).
Oh, I don’t know, maybe something after dinner schnappsy. We will go the Reisetbauer route; Marillen (apricot) for me, Zwetschke (plum) for Ben. And Bethy had the Nux Alpina Walnut, a crazy herbal liquor, and there was dessert; a mad buckwheat almond cake with schlag & prunes, oh my.
I fricken love this place; I’m totally infiltrating Ben’s holiday party here. I think as my cover I will be a smarmy executive from the state unspecified Portland field office. Or a beekeeper. Beer is clean & fresh (at least some of the taps rotate), and the food is just incredible. Servers are playful, wonderfully attentive, knowledgeable, and fun. A very homey Austrian joint.
