The berzerker was named after the Viking warrior, used as a Castle piece on the world famous Lewis Chess Men set. The name is not totally unrelated to the beer though.

The beer pours a nice ruby bronze colour with a very dark head (creamy-light brown). The nose is both pleasant and complex, giving off a nice scent of malts with a prodominantly fruity scent, I couldn't put my finger on which fruit.

This followed through to the taste, a nice balance of malts and fruit with a very pleasant zesty after taste, thoroughly enjoyable. A nice mouthfeel, you can tell this is a beer, but it is not too thick.

I found the pint very drinkable, it was not too sweet which was a bit surprising given the strength. However I would not attempt to have this all night as I preffer to remember the majority of the night rather than be taxied home by 9pm.

A nice traditional Scottish Wee Heavy ale, well worth a try, I have enjoyed a few since my first and have found this particularly pleasant with red meat. Deserving to be in any beer drinkers cupboard.

Pours a medium brown, tiny head, very little carb

Some sweet apple and lightly phenolic nose.

Stewed apples, spice, dry, light bitterness. Dry enough that the relative lack of bitterness doesn't really matter in a beer of this size. Slightly tart finish, vegetal too.

Medium body, light carb.

Not sure of what to make of this, it's fairly light in flavour and the flavour it does have is somewhat odd . Not bad, just a bit odd

Served on cask at the Phoenix from the flames pub, inverness scotland

A: A crisp amber in color, minimal head as one would expect from cask., faint bit of lacing.

s: Peat, caramel, toffee, faintest hint of funk.

t: Smooth with a mid-palate bite. caramel and toffee notes are predominant. a relatively malty example of this style.

m: smooth and incredibly drinkable.

I really wanted to like this beer. Being brewed in Stornoway, having a really cool label featuring "one of the rooks of the Lewis chessman board found on the island in1832' and a relatively high Abv gave me great expectations.

Filling the glass heightened my expectations with a rich foamy head and a golden tawny colour. A spritzy body was how things began but this was quickly eclipsed by a gap of nothingness before being hit by a metallic taste reminiscent of bruised apples and a nitro can of Cafferys. Despite the bottle claiming it to be' Malty with an intense hop to match' I really struggled to find much of the expected hop bitterness. I guess, given the 7.5 per cent abv I expected an American craft IPA level of hop attack. But neither is this anything like a Scotch Ale/ Wee Heavy. Clearly this has been classed in the wrong genre. Left me feeling pretty bloated too.

Apparently this won the Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Scotland 2006. Hmmm. They must have been drinking a different beer. To sum up? There is no way in hell that this is anything like a 'wee heavy'.

Pours a dark redish amber with a welcoming weak and bubbly head that dies down quick, leaving a flimsy lid.

Smells of soap, marzipan, freshly crushep flower stalk, and a peppry note of alcohol.

Taste is very different... starts of with dark toffee malt, a little hint of floral hops, very faint though. Goes on with a light bitterness and a hint of burnt wood and... a mix of carramellized dried berries and nuts, faint though.

Mouthfeel is okay, nothing special, moderate carbonation with slightly sharp bubbles, and a medium body.

Nice strong beer from Hebridean. Copper-amber colour with a porous, foamy head. Warm, malty scent with a bit of hop zest. A tinge of copper in the flavour, but citrusy hops and bready malts.

A bit fizzy on the tongue, but it works for this. Drinkability is not really hampered by the alcohol.
