Poured into a stange, the appearance was a dark ruddy burnt red color with a finger’s worth of some foamy white head that fell off at a slow pace. Lace was stringy and strewn about. The aroma had some burnt toast and roasted malt. Light nuttiness then earthy and grassy hops. The flavor seemed more like dough than burnt toast, semi-sweet with an underscore of bitterness. Earthiness came back to blend subtly into the aftertaste and roll into the finish. The feel was about light bodied, perhaps just a touch above with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation was soft with the ABV feeling appropriate. Overall, decent to me, just as a session beer, but not a true altbier. Americanized but there’s nothing really off.

Impressive bubble-over-the-glass head. 3/4 head initially. Settles slowly and in a rocky way. Leaves a couple of chunky rings of lace. Very dark color--Mahogany-ruby where only a little light shines through.

Sweet caramel malt notes. Light alcohol.

Tastes like a thin porter. There are burnt malt flavors up front, but the body is light. This accentuates the moderate carbonation level. The swallow brings about a bit of sour cherry. The aftertaste has some cream and dark chocolate. Short lasting.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large beige head that fades very quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, nuts, maple and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, nuts, and maple. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence I s mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, there are definitely better beers in the style that I would pick first.

Poured into a pint glass this beer was a dark brown color with some red highlights. There was a huge fluffy tan head that left some sticky lace.

Malty aroma, both toasted and sweet. A little bit of floral hops.

Caramel taste, some late hops. Simple and straightforward.

A dry and rather musty mouthfeel.

Enjoyable beer.

Pours a light tan, five+ finger head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Almost black color, no highlights, some yeast left in bottle. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Toasted malt nose and flavor is roasted/burnt malt, hints of caramel. Lingering bitterness. $8.25 for a 22oz bottle from Bert's Better Beers Hooksett NH.

22 oz. Simple German beer. Very close to Dusseldorf than Dortmund. I am not sure but it's probably one of the noble hops. I can't say..Has a fair color and plain taste. Good balance between malts and hops. Not enough hops smell for me. It's drinkable.

Bottle from Bert’s, Pours a fairly dark brown with garnet at the edges and a smallish off white head that dissipates to a cap on top. Sweet caramel with a bit of melanoid to it and a touch of fruit and floral hop. The flavor is sweet caramel and burnt sugar with a hint of dark dried fruit and a touch of butterscotch. The flavor lingers with a non descript hop bitterness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. I’m liking this one more than the other two I’ve tried although it does seem a touch dark for the style.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on February 21, 2014.

The pour is very attractive with its very dark brown color and ruby red hues floating along the edge of the glass. Full, soapy tan head.

The aroma is malt forward with a roasted character and an essence of German malts. There is a toffee character on the nose too.

The body is light and wonderfully smooth.

The taste is also very malt forward but there is a kind of musty feel to the flavor too. Any hop character is mild and barley noticeable. Dry finish. Easy to drink.
