Extremely generous extra given to me from Rhettroactive for picking him up some Dark Intrigue.

A: Hazy deep orange pour with a bit more than a finger of white head. A lot of lacing runs down the side of my Founders Brewing Company goblet, but the retention isn't great.

S: The smell is not as hoppy as I was expecting, but the balance between that and some citrus is quite good. The fruits are more in focus on the smell. Grassy hops, with slight pine, take care of the bitterness. Perhaps a slight malt sweetness in there as well.

T: Again, the fruits take the forefront here. I think it's a nice change, but I do find it to be a bit watery. Certainly more grassy than floral, and a lot of citrus, over grapefruit, is coming through. Nice light hop bitterness on the end.

MF: Light body and lower carbonation with a dry finish.

O: Pliny of the East? No. Troegs Perpetual is better. This is very good, but to say it's on the same level as Pliny is simply not true.

Medium orange pour, small white head. Nose is sweet citrus hops, orange marmalade, gooey kind of, with some mint and pine. Orange and grapefruit rind in the mouth, some forest. I like that really sticky orange quality to this. Some sharp pine bitterness on the finish rounds this out very nicely. It reminds me of Dreadnaught a bit, but toned down, with that sticky citrus element. Good IPA, thanks Chris!

A- Pours a hazy dark orange liquid with a thick and craggy off white head that has excellent retention.

S- Pine, citrus, grass, and a nice caramel malt backing. All of the aspects work nicely together.

T- Just like the aroma but rather mild. The hoppiness is right up front followed by some malt sweetness then a nice bitter finish.

M- Light on the carbonation with some lingering bitterness.

O- A nice IPA that drinks nicely but when it is all said and done, it is not very interesting to me.

This is one of my favorite local "go-to" beers.

Pours just a touch light off of a shade copper, tight focused head.

Smell to me is fresh, clean and simple. Lots of citrus with just a faint hint of pine on the nose.

Tastes very similar to the smell, just drinks extremely easily. It is an extremely balanced IPA. Its not going to knock you socks off with extreme IBUs, it delivers classic IPA taste with a bit of malt in harmony with the citrus.

A well-executed IPA in its most basic form makes this a beer I go back to again and again.

A: Pours a clear gold and is topped by about a finger width of foam. Pretty good retention and a moderate amount of lacing.

S: I'm getting a wide range of hop smells; everything from citrus to bold earth notes, Good stuff.

T: definitely balanced, however, the hops are still assertive. The earthiness of the hops compete with the solid malt body. Not what I would call a hop bomb, but it still does an excellent job of showcasing the hops.

M: A little thin and bubbly for my liking. An easily overlooked aspect of this beer though.

O: A good and often overlooked IPA!

Reviewed on 06/07/2011. Thanks to Tedwarhc. 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a hazy pale copper color with a finger of off white foam that retains nicely. Nice foamy lacing clings to the glass with each sip.

A good deal going on in the nose. Nice citrus hops (oranges come to mind) are here as is some grapefruit and a slight pine character. Some grassy notes are picked up as well. Some slight malt sweetness but the nose is very hop forward.

Like the aromas in the nose, there are multiple hop flavors kicking around here. The difference is that the most prevalent character are the green/grassy notes. It's there at the beginning with a bit of orange-like citrus. It's in the middle with some soft piny bitterness. It mellows out just before the bitterness takes on a resiny character at the finish.

The body is on the lighter side of medium but it works well and allows the different hop characteristics to come through nicely. The lighter body pairs with medium carbonation to give the beer a creamy mouthfeel before a hugely dry and moderately bitter finish.

Overall an excellent IPA. Great hop flavor without hitting you over the head with them. The different hop flavors and aromas blend together nicely, which is pretty amazing considering that there are clearly a good amount of hops in this beer.
