American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This award winning, copper colored pale ale was the first beer we ever brewed and it's still one of our favorites. We carefully blend German and English malts and add generous portions of American hops for a refreshing citrus aroma with a dry finish.

It pours a copper color. A one finger white head, slightly creamy, dissipating rapidly. Some bubbles lazily stream toward the surface.

The nose is of citrus, especailly grapefruit, spicy hops, malt, and a mild floral note. The taste consists of grapefruit, a little apple, bitter hops, and a malty, nutty, finish, leading into a bit of a phenolic aftertaste.

The mouth is rather light, showing decent complexity. Thought the aftertaste is a bit harsh and unpleasnt.

I've toured this brewery and really like some of their beers--this is by no means a bad beer and certainly quaffable, but I wish I liked it more. It's not the beer that I would want to give somebody and say, "this is what Columbus brewing is all about."

This is a nice hoppy APA from CBC. Nothing too unusual or bold here, although the beer leans in the bold direction for style. This is a very well brewed PA, with plenty of citrus and a bit of pine in the aroma, and this carries thru to the taste and finish. I appreciate the substantial hop flavor without an over-whelming bitterness. Looks nice too, being crystal clear amber with a durable head.
Highly recommended!

Slightly more copper than golden with a moderate white foam.
Nose of bready malts, grapefruit and pine.
Begins with a biscuit maltiness that hints towards both raw grain and caramel, but never reaches either. A ting of Granny Smiths towards the center. Hopping enters mildly with pine and grapefruit. Bitterness is cut short and this rides out with gentle citrus and bread notes.
On the thin side of medium bodied, with a rapid carbonation up front.
A very average APA on all accounts. Memorable this ain't. But it hits the required notes and makes a decent session.

On tap at the Crosswoods Columbus Fish Market.

Appearance: Arrived with a one finger head that left nice lacing down the glass. Color is golden brown.

Smell: Hops are somewhat overwhelming for what I've come to expect from a pale ale. That's a good thing in my opinion.

Taste: Pretty good. Hops and bitterness are indeed strong for a pale ale. Leaves a somewhat dry taste in my mouth. But, it's good. Nothing extremely complex. Hoppy and dry. Bitterness is what sticks with me most.

Mouthfeel/drinkability: It goes down pretty easy, though it does leave me dry. I could drink a few of these. Overall, pretty good offering from Columbus Brewing Company. To the best of my knowledge, this is their flagship beer. But, I recall their IPA being a tad better.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a light orange amber color with a fairly thick white head that dissipates slowly leaving some lacing on the glass

S - Not any strong aromas that stand out, but a small amount of hoppiness and a small amount of caramel

T - Very similar to the smell, good amounts of hoppiness, with some caramel but with a good amount of citrus flavors

M - Smooth, medium bodied with not too much carbonation

D - Easy to drink, not too thick or too hard to handle.

A good beer, brewed just down the road from me. First from Columbus Brewing I've tried, but I'll definitely go back for more.

Best Columbus, OH brewed beer I've had. While Columbus Brewing Company is no Great Lakes, this is a very solid pale ale. Excellent copper color. Good flavor and drinkability. Seems to be a beer macro drinkers like if they try it, but make no mistake; this is not a watered down flavorless pale ale. This is a full-flavored although not exceptional pale ale that finishes well. Thumbs up to CBC.

Dark amber color, not a very pale ale. Generous off-white head fades to a small but dense covering that leaves some lace behind.

Sweet, rich grainy malty smells, caramalts, toffee scents dominate, some light grassy and citrusy (orange) hops.

Tastes much as the smell led me to imagine. Sweet caramalts dominating the impression, but it is "dry" somewhat on the finish as the grassy and citrus hops pop in.

Pretty smooth, moderately carbonated medium bodied. Fairly drinkable, nothing special.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a chalice, the beer pours a hazy amber/copper color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is citrusy and grassy hops, along with some sweet malt and orange peel. Taste is citrusy and piney hops, biscuity malt, and some orange peel and tangerines. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy, dry, and has good carbonation. Drinkability is good, it's smooth and easy to drink. Overall I think this is a good all around pale ale, it's a not a bad choice as a session beer. Recommended.

Pours a copper color with a highly viscous white head that leaves a sheen of lace on the pint glass.
Aroma of pale malts, grain and a some flowery bitterings.
Flavor of pale malts, some wheat bread and a hint of ginger as well as some flowery hop oils.
Mouthfeel as a real hard water hint throughout and some well placed bittering on the finish.
Drinkability is solid. Well-made beer but I imagine the draught version offers a truer sense of what this beer is really all about. The hard water taste and feel accentuates the hops and is only a little bit distracting.
Thanks to Chilidog for the samples.
