A: pours black as night w no head

S: sweet, toasty, chocolate

T: CBC is known for amazing hoppy beers...their ipa is second to none...I was a bit skeptical at an imperial stout...But it's pretty good...surpringly drinkable at 10%abv...thick, semi-sweet, toasty chocolate.

M-smooth, not too thick...not too thin

O-this is a damn fine effort...I can really see CBC tweaking this and making it even better. Could I have more than one? Prob not...too heavy but I was surprised at how tasty it is. Would love to see this bourbon barrel aged.

A- Pours black with a nice brown head. Head has pretty solid retention and leaves a bit of lacing.

S- Lots of roasted malts, charcoal, chocolate, and light coffee.

T- Very rich chocolate almost over powering. Very sweet, rich in sugars and a bit of char.

M- Full in body and carbonation was pretty tame.

O- A little disappointed in this one, but I'll give it another shot down the road.

I'm pretty sure this beer was specifically brewed to be barrel-aged, but there was a little bit of the base beer left over for the Columbus Microbrew Fest 2011 at North Market. Having never had an imperial stout by CBC, who is known for working magic with hops, I was really excited to try this one.

Appearance
There's no doubt that this is the thickest beer by CBC I've ever tried. Its very dark and very thick, yet somehow it supports a huge, burnt red cap of foam. Retention and lacing are above average for the style.

Aroma
Lots of roasted peanut shells, burnt grains and fusel alcohol. Some chocolate syrup is in the mix as well. It starts out smelling pretty rough around the edges and becomes a lot sweeter smelling as it warms.

Taste
Its much like the aroma in that it sweetens as it warms, and is fairly rough in spots. Alcohol seems out of check, giving strong notions of itself. Since this beer was brewed to be put into barrels it was left very sweet. Indeed, if this were going to be the base beer on its own I have faith that the sweetness would be toned back a little bit and the flavor would fall together a lot better. There is a lot of chocolate syrup and burnt sugars.

Mouthfeel
The extra sugars left in this beer have really effected the body in a way that I like very much. This beer is thick, chewy and silky. Carbonation looks like would be high but the heavy body is too much for all of it to push through. The result is a softer feeling beer.

Overall
This is but the beginning of an imperial stout from CBC. This beer will be back with plenty of recipe changes to fit CBC's level of quality. They have a really good jumping off point with this recipe.
