deep dark amber, pretty much brown with a nice one inch head that faded to reveal a thin film of lace. Nothing clinging to the glass, but not expecting it to. Smell was faint but nice. English malts and barley, nuts, oak, and grassy earthy tones predominate. The taste was pretty much what I expected, nice English Dark, well round and very sessionable

I haven't had this beer in a long time but I'm trying to catch up on some missed reviews. This used to be my favorite beer before the craft beer explosion. It may still be my favorite brown but I need to try it again because I've had a few different browns now. From what I remember this one is a nice chocolaty nutty goodness that is very drinkable. The brewer usually comes out with this in the fall. Hopefully it is still in rotation. The only other brown that has come close to the Nut is one I had from Dogfish it was very nice. Oh that reminds I need to review that one too. Some much beer so little time!! Long live CBC!!

Bottle acquired in trade with OhioDad (thanks!).

***Bottle opened with a loud psst and a small gush - needless to say, this one poured all (and I mean all) head. ***

The head never fully settled (the best I could get it was 4 fingers of head vs. 2.5 finger of beer). Color was a medium to deep brown. Aromas of chocolate, roasted malts, and light caramel. Tastes of nuts, lighter chocolate, roasted malts with a lightly bitter finish.

this Fantastic beer is like melting a Mr. Goodbar into a fine dark lager. This ale is not heavy on mouthfeel but certainly is heavy on taste. The best nut brown in the country-at least for what I've tried. Nice cool start, less heavy than expected is followed by the most pleasant rush of half-sweet, half semi-sweet chocolate and hazel/peanut aroma that explodes at contact. Can drink freely because of its unexpected excellent drinkability. Check it out. Very flavorful....a little dry....a little thin...but that flavor and the great lacing and appearance make this an extremely solid offering..and perhaps the best from CBC. Nut Brown Ale's usually are too nutty to get alot of the hops and I'm not gonna reduce the score because of it...besides,.. this beer tastes great!

Poured into a pint glass, the beer is dark brown with about a half inch tan head which goes away quickly. It smells like nuts, toffee, and roasted malt, very nice. It tastes like nuts, chocolate, and a hint of coffee. It has a good bit of sweetness and bitterness at the same time. It has a light/medium body, with a slightly creamy and smooth mouthfeel. This is a good beer, very tasty and drinkable. The Nut Brown Ale could become a session beer for me, it's good stuff.

A: Had this beer on tap at Martini's Italian Restaurant in Columbus, OH out of their house pilsner glass. It poured a thick dark brown color with a 1/2 inch tan head that lasted with decent lacing.

S: The smell is a nice musty, nutty, malty scent.

T: Mmmm good beer. It got a nice chocolate, nut, and coffee flavor. This is one of the best brown ales I've had. It has a good solid flavor and goes well with food.

M: Mouthfeel was medium and very smooth.

D: I should have gone back and got another, I can't get it here in Atlanta.

I got this beer at Tony's in Athens, OH.

It poured a dark brown-maroon color. About a half-inch head off of the tap.

It smelled like roasted nuts and coffee.

It tasted much like that too. A lot of flavor in this beer. A little bit bitter, but not overly done. It goes down smooth. Being a nut brown ale, I couldn't taste any hops in this, but that distinctive coffee and roasted nut flavor stayed throughout the beer.

The mouthfeel of this beer was good. You could drink it at a good pace. It didn't seem strong at all on the alcohol.

A lot of flavor, overall though. I'd like to drink another one of these soon.

freshness band on side of label not marked at all

Dark chestnut brown reveals cola-colored translucence before the light. Fluffy tan head dies down in sticky lumps not unlike a root beer float. Rings and smatters of lace on the glass.

Distinct toffee scent leads to more caramel and butter with a hint of smoke.

Thin bodied and fizzy.

Meh.

This is the third beer I have tried from my local microbrewery and, alas, is my least favorite thus far. The experience began well enough. It poured a deep blackish brown, very stout-like in appearance. The smell definitely lived up to the name of the brew - the scent of roasted nuts filled my nose. Very appropriate coming from the home of Brutus Buckeye. It was a pleasant enough scent, quite sharp, but not really one I would associate with a good beer. The drinking experience was rather interesting. Upon entering my mouth and traveling across my tastebuds, I got a split second of the sharp roasted nut flavor, and after that point, there was nothing. It was almost like water with a nutty kick at the beginning. There was no fullness or complexity to the beer at all - just an onset of nuttiness. Not a favorite.

Pours a very dark brown brew for the style. A clear dark brown ale with red highlights, at first I thought the bar keep made a mistake and filled the glass with a stout!

Smell is rich roasted malt with a clear chocolate scent.

Flavor is chocolate and coffee. I double-checked twice to make sure that this was a brown ale! Slightly bitter roasted flavor, but not smoky in taste. Very strong and dry flavor for the style.

Mouthfeel is good.

Strongly flavored for a brown ale, loses points on Drinkability.

This beer presents in a 12oz brown bottle. It poured a beige one finger head. The head reduces quickly to a thin film that laces very nicely. The film sticks around throughout the entire drink. The beer is a dark brown with dark amber highlights.

The first smell is a beautiful roasted coffee aroma. It’s strong but not overpowering. A great taste. It’s a coffee sweetness that is followed by a dry roasted bitterness. The bitterness lingers pleasantly for quite a while. A somewhat heavily flavored brown ale. I thought the carbonation was a bit high, but it helps the mouth feel light. Medium body that is perfect for this beer. Overall a very drinkable brown ale that I will certainly be having again.

On draught at the CBC. Solid dark brown ale with a minimal off-white head and light lacing. Big roasty aroma with hints of chocolate and brown sugar. The flavor is nutty with more hops than expected. The finish is lightly bitter and lingering. Hard to go wrong with this one with a CBC meal.

This beer poured a dark brown color with almost a ruby shade to it. Nice white foamy head and good lace throughout. This brown ale smells almost of roasted coffee. The taste is a wonderful roasted, almost burnt nuttiness. There is just a slight bitterness. I was quite shocked that this brown ale would be so tasty. I found the mouthfeel to be decent, and found it to be very drinkable. This is my favorite from CBC. Seems to be a bold brown ale, not a typical watered down one.

Pours a deep brown with a nice head and terrific lacing left on the glass. A really great looking nut brown. The smell is malty and dry with traces of the nuttiness rounding it out. A very smooth mellow taste with noticable hops but it's overpowered by the charachter of the nut/malt chocolate taste. This nut brown stays with you, the aftertaste is quite good. A quality beer by Columbus.

Served as a sample at the Columbus Brewing Company. The color was a dark brown, with a nice light brown head. The smell was a very dry malt. The taste was a very dry, heavy malt, with a nice nuttiness in the body. Mouthfeel was quite smooth. As for drinkability, could have a few more of these.

Though Brown Ale isn't generally one of my favorite styles, this is a solid example of one, and another quality beer from Columbus. Another one I'd pick up a 6 pack of.

This is one handsome beer! The glass contained a great dark amber ale covered by a humongous tan head that lasted about as long as I did and covered the glass in great volumes of lace. Wonderful toasty aromas and wafts of roasted almond coffee. Lighter body than expected, but, oh my, it is full of smooth, creamy, nutty goodness. Very delicious; a great nut brown ale.

This is a heavily flavored brown ale. Clean crisp malty aroma with a little hint of hops and coffee. The flavor is robustly roasted with a definite coffee vein that lingers through. The bitterness is light. The heavier body makes for quite a smooth drinkable brew. Not too much malt, and not too dry. Very tasty.

This beer poured a very dark amber color and some carbonation was present. It formed a very good foamy light tan head that held pretty good and left some nice ringed lace as it slowly subsided. The aroma was of hops, malt and coffee. The flavor was of malt and burnt coffee. The finish was a touch lighter than others of this style.

They say: "This rich American brown ale is robust and velvety smooth with some fruit character and a roasty finish. We call it 'liquid bread.' 'Four Stars'- Great Lakes Beer Guide." I say: Damn good beer - the smoothest beer I have ever had; the way an American brown should be. Liquid bread indeed.
