A 330ml bottle with a BB of May 2014. Acquired a little while back from Trembling Madness in York. The label states that this beer is the result of a collaboration between Fyne and the winners of the IBD Scottish home brewing competition.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A very dark brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy mocha foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of intense dark malt with hints of roasted grain, burnt notes, coffee, dried fruit, molasses, mild cocoa, liquorice and yeast. A whisper of booze in the background. Rich and delicious.

Tastes of roasted malt with a complex character and a lingering bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, dark malt, coffee, dried fruit, molasses, cocoa, faint smoke, liquorice, yeast and stewed leaves. Slighty sweet with just a touch of sourness in the background. A strident, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and good body. Could be a shade thicker for the style. Mildly astringent, followed by an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, fruitiness and molasses.

Very nice - if I had to pick a beer for the end of the world this wouldn't be a bad choice. Looks lovely, while the aroma and flavour are stuffed with roasted malt, fruity notes and molasses. Bitter but tempered by a subtle sweetness. Decent body; could be a smidge thicker. Goes down a treat - if dark beers are your thing then this is well worth sampling.

Bottle at Brew Dock, Dublin, Ireland

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color. Traces of dark red are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short tan head that died down, leaving a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of burnt malts and licorice are present in the nose. The smell becomes a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but seems a bit sweeter with notes of toffee, burnt malts and licorice. There is a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This porter is rather easy to drink but delivers a lot of flavors considering its relatively light-bodied nature.

Rich dark just disturbed earth of grave near black/dark brown body with splattering of say eighty percent tiny light tan bubbles

Big liquorice nose, some petrol

Smoky taste and then blackcurrant jam on burned toast

Not as solid as I would have thought with the big abv
slightly over lively

Deceptive dark beer, the kind you would throw back thinking you could still take on a zombie horde...

Viscous chocolate oxblood with stiff tan head that trails right away and grows to lots of speckles and rings.
Brownie, earth, and coffee on the nose.
Cakey sweetness up front, a touch of Kahlua and fig, gentle roast hit, and mild woody, citronella hop hit.
Soft licorice end and numbing minty linger.
Soft, creamy, medium verging on light.

Gentle dark malts, sweetness and silky mouthfeel make this like nothing so much as chocolate cake. Balanced, easy on the roast and porter body make it very pleasant. It’d be nice to knock a point off the ABV for drinkability, but not fussing.

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£2.80):
Dark, ruby red colour with a half centimetre tall, bubbly head that is a medium tan colour and leaves some lacing around the sides of the glass as it is drank.

Lighter than expected on the nose with some rich chocolate notes and a creamy smell with some raosted malts and a nice amount of coffee. There is a milky, caramel aroma with some earthy malts in there. The smell is a very nice, standard porter smell.

Milky chocolate and roasted malt taste to begin that is coupled with some some coffee and an earthy hop taste that is light but noticeable. There is a minor alcohol taste and some sweet malts along with a touch of caramel and a light bitter finish.

Smooth and with a slight alcohol kick to things. There is full, slightly creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

A very nice beer and one that I feel was better than the Impale IPA that beat it in a hombrew competition that lead to both being commercially brewed.
