Gun Hill Brewing Company - Barrel-Aged "Void of Light"
on tap @ Sugarburg, Brooklyn, NY
$9 for 11 oz.
Appearance: Brown-black beneath a creamy head of dark tan. Excellent head retention and lacing.
Aroma: Surprisingly limited, although through the dense head that makes sense. Roast and chocolatey/caramelish.
Flavor: Clearly Bourbon barrels with the associated wood notes. Dark malt, soft dark chocolate, caramel in different degrees, subtle roast coffee - like creamy, sugary coffee. Fairly similar from start to finish, but balanced, and quite nice straight through. If you look you can also find some dark fruits, and a bit of earthiness and dried grass & leaves. Superbly balanced, and the oak/barrel is neither over-done or under-done.
Mouthfeel: Somewhat creamy medium body with a very fine bubbled, moderate carbonation that gives a gentle caress to the tongue.
Overall: Really nicely balanced against the Bourbon and wood. I've never sampled the "Void of Light" so I'm at a loss, but what I've found here is fairly exceptional. Well worth trying, if not seeking out.

On tap at Arts and Crafts Beer Parlor, NYC.
Pours a jet black, ink and motor oil like, with no head. Despite the absence of a head, a wispy ring of lacing developed.
The nose yields notes of nutty malts, chocolate, espresso and toffee. Barrel aromas emit notes of bourbon, vanilla and oak, to go along with woodsy and earthy hops.
Nutty and biscuity with lots of roasted malt flavors that evoke notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Additional malty notes of honey, caramel, toffee and a brown sugar sweetness, as well as dark fruit/raisin like flavors. This is balanced by lightly charred dark malts that provide dryness, and earthy and woodsy hops. Lots of barrel characteristics including bourbon, cherry, vanilla, cherries and oak.
Full bodied but easy to drink due to its dryness. The mouthfeel is smooth and mouth coating. The finish is dry. The carbonation is moderate to gentle.
Nice barrel aged stout. It wasn’t too boozy, nor too sweet, had nice barrel aging characteristics, and retained the roasted flavors of the base style.

Appearance: Arrives coffee colored with a finger's worth of tan foam; a few strands of lace
Smell: Roasted tones, with chocolate, licorice and Bourbon tones; hints of oak and vanilla
Taste: Roast forward with the chocolate and licorice tones developing; through the middle, the Bourbon, oak and vanilla flavors develop but the finish has a slight sour direction that may just be some smoke and char
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation
Overall: The Bourbon was deftly handled but there is just a bit too much roast and char for my palate

On tap at Blu Wolf Bistro in Rochester, NY.
This one pours fairly dark black, with a half inch brown head. The body is nearly opaque, with no real lacing.
The nose is all bourbon cookie dough, with oak, raisins, and strong roast.
This tastes absolutely delicious. I was worried that the base would get buried under the barrel, as it's not an imperial stout. Luckily, this did not happen. There's still a heavy roast and licorice presence, with a drying oak presence that's just swell. It really does kind of taste like oatmeal cookie dough. There's a little bit of hop bitterness, with vanilla and char rounding it all out.
This is medium bodied- neither thick, nor thin- somewhere in between.
Yass kween. This is delightful.

Wow! This is how barrel aging should be done. The beer is not defined by the barrel, only accentuated by it. Black pour with a half finger cap of mocha foam. Tons of chocolate and coffe in the nose, blackberries, oak, tobacco, bark, and caramel. Coffee grounds, soil, dark chocolate, raisin, new car seat, and cowbay hat in the flavor... And a rich full mouthfeel to top it all off.
