Clear dark brown colored beer with a small tan colored head. I can see how this could be called black.

Smells malty and a little smokey. English hop aromas mostly leather and tobacco leaf.

Starts out mildly sweet with a smoky after taste. Not real strongly flavored I pick up a bit of treacle. Little bit of bitterness in the after taste.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a beer that is worth a try. Like all Newcastle beers it is on the mild and subtle side.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy tan head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and nutty aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and nutty flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is drinkable but slightly watery in the flavors.

A-it is a mahogany color when held up to a light, with large off white head that faded slowly and left a good lace on the glass
S-caramel malt sweetness, plums, and has a nut background with a slight roast aroma
T-roasted caramel malt with a yeast and mild nutty taste with a roast aftertaste
M-watered down feel with low carbonation
O- it had a good smell and look, but the taste just could not match up

12 oz bottle pours a clear, dark chestnut color with a large cap of tan head. Nice retention and even better lacing. A really nice looking beer, though it is not quite black.

Nose is caramel malts with a touch of cocoa and plum fruitiness. A little chalky minerality is also there. Smells decent at least...

Taste is less flavorful than I anticipated from the aroma, but there is some decent malt and English yeast flavors here. Its pretty thin though and fairly simplistic. Its not bad, but there is not a whole lot here of interest. My expectations were low, and while the aroma and appearance exceeded expectations, the taste was right on par. Fun to try a single, but glad I didnt buy a whole sixer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Samuel Smith nonik.

Clear sienna body with ruby highlights and a faint yet lasting smattering of beige foam up top. Slight, sandy lacing; decent retention.

Gentle aromatics are a blend of fruity esters (kiwi, berries, etc.) and roast malt notes (toffee, hazelnuts, stale coffee, etc.).

Sweet clean malt dominates the flavor profile, supported by an earthy/leafy/nutty/charred array of roast flavors. Mild peppery bitterness helps balance out the sweetness leading into a light medium finish. Smokey, mineral-laden, almost vegetal aftertaste brings to mind river stones.

Light bodied, vaguely acrid, slightly thin mouth-feel.

Lacks character compared to the better versions of the style, but not bad overall.
