Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Samuel Smith nonik.

Clear sienna body with ruby highlights and a faint yet lasting smattering of beige foam up top. Slight, sandy lacing; decent retention.

Gentle aromatics are a blend of fruity esters (kiwi, berries, etc.) and roast malt notes (toffee, hazelnuts, stale coffee, etc.).

Sweet clean malt dominates the flavor profile, supported by an earthy/leafy/nutty/charred array of roast flavors. Mild peppery bitterness helps balance out the sweetness leading into a light medium finish. Smokey, mineral-laden, almost vegetal aftertaste brings to mind river stones.

Light bodied, vaguely acrid, slightly thin mouth-feel.

Lacks character compared to the better versions of the style, but not bad overall.

I have to agree with ahommell and anon on their reviews. This beer had me very excited, especially after sampling other Newcastle products. Unfortunately this is one of those that made me hold it in my mouth and had to force-swallow the beer. I tried a second time, thinking maybe I was being judgmental, but no, this beer had a metallic taste and it was just awful to me. I was glad I got it in a "pick your 6" sampler as well or I would have been quite upset. Needless to say, I dumped it out, very disappointing. I normally think that some of the reviews are a bit too harsh, but this one deserved harsh reviews.

Had this from a bottle poured into a pint glass. I really enjoy Newcastle products so I figured I'd give this beer a try. This beer pours a brownish and reddish color. The smell is very coffee, chocolate and roasted malty. The taste is pretty much like the smell. You get a good mix of coffee and chocolate. First thoughts were it's very well balanced. Really not a bad beer at all. This beer seems like it would go well with different beef dinners. I liked it and recommend it.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a cola brown color with a huge and bubbly tan colored head of three finger height. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over time and leaving a great level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is a mix of a light coffee smell, some roasted malt and a woody like smell. Along with these smells are some lighter notes of licorice and oak smell giving it a rather interesting aroma overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter chocolate and roasted malt flavor. The flavors upfront and throughout the taste is rather light, which for the 4.2% abv session style brew is much anticipated. As the flavor advances from the start, some woody flavors as well as a bit of a cola like flavor comes to the tongue. The sweetens fades ever so slightly toward the end with the woody, chocolate and roasted flavors begins joined y a bit of a earthy flavor, to leave a rather light roasted, moderately sweetened and somewhat odd flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the rather thin and watery side with a carbonation level that is rather average.

Overall – While it was rather light and somewhat flavorful, it just wasn't all that smooth in my opinion. OK and a decent party session, but really nothing more.

Appearance: Appears black, but close inspection shows it to be dark brown, light will pass through it showing some haziness. Doesn't hold a head, or really a collar.

Smell: Earthy, dusty, a bit of river water, nothing wrong, just a bit base.

Taste: A mild ribbon of dark toasted mat which goes a bit dark malt extract, give the package a fair flavor, but it's all a bit thin. Light tonic water, metallic coppery bit in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Prickly despite the lack of a head, a bit fizzy with the light body.

Overall: A thin version of a nice style. Hate to see this underdone, not so much in volume but in body. A little more protein would give it some substance and make it a bit more refreshing and quenching. As it is, it's better than a standard macro beer, but you'll not long for one.

Bottle poured into a nonic pint.

A- A liberal pour cascades something like a nitro. 2-finger, tan-to-brown head. Clean, dark brown body displays moderate-light carbonation. Reddish hues. Good stick. Head falls, then hangs on at 1/4 finger.

S- Coffee, dark chocolate, berries. Hints of cracker or biscuit and brown sugar. Very light, leafy hops.

T- Medium roast coffee with a spoonful or two of sugar. Hints of semi-sweet chocolate. Roasty qualities. Hops are enough to keep the sweetness in check and really clean up the finish.

M- Moderate-light body with medium-light carbonation. Pretty smooth.

O- One of Newcastle's better "limited edition" beers. At 4.2% ABV, I could see sessioning this. I'd buy it again. I wish more American brewers would do a flavorful, low alcohol beer and price it accordingly.
