Poured on draft at the Royal Oak Edinburgh.
Pour is thick creamy and dark with a foamy white cream head.
Aroma is toasted malt, slight molasses.
Taste is creamy and roasty like a nitro coffee.
Absolutely delicious light but flavorful.

McEwan's Pale Ale has gone through a fair few mutations over the years, as it's now almost black. The aroma and taste, inasmuch as it has any, are mostly of roast barley. It's not unpleasant, but that's because it tastes of almost nothing. It'll do, if you're very thirsty or the pub is otherwise nice, but it's not worth seeking out.

Well known throughout Scotland as a pint of Light. It is becoming less common now, but can still be found regularly throughout Scotland.
The beer pours dark, very dark, a slight hint of dark brown in the black makes this look similar to a pint of Guinness. The beer has virtually no scent, slight maltiness but this is very faint.
The taste is very surprising to someone that is not familiar with this type of beer; malty, slight aftertaste of meatiness (as if you had beef crisps about half an hour ago) and it is very light mouthfeel. This does turn me off the beer as I prefer a heavy, but this beer is not unpleasant. It is highly drinkable, one of the few beers that you could drink all night and not have a bloated feeling.
This is an ideal pint for anyone visiting Scotland on a day where it is too warm (we get them sometimes) to drink heavy but you don't want to lower yourself to drinking lager. A nice pint, not great, but very highly drinkable.
