Enjoyed again (not for a few years) tonight at Texas Road House (great restaurant with a not so great beer selection). Brown with red highlights in the glass. Little head to speak of. Sweet caramel in the nose and the same in the initial taste. Touch of bitterness in the aftertaste, with a nice bubbly carbonation on the tongue. Nothing complex here, but a really enjoyable companion to food. Very drinkable.

The is no head, a deep dark tan color with red hue. The nose is caramel, molasses, nutty and malty notes The taste is is nothing like the nose it is bland with hints of nuts and caramel and roasted malt with a slight hint of hops. The is an acidic finish kinda gave it a tarty mouth feel is a good beer but a bit overrated. There is no body and very thin a bit watery

Poured from 12oz into 19oz pilsner

Appearance: Pours brown with amber hues (as it looks through the clear bottle) with a small-is off white head that dissipates quickly with a little lace.

Smell: Smells very sweet with a little bit of earthiness and grassiness.

Taste: Tastes pretty sweet, almost chocolaty, but then has an aftertaste that is weak and similar to a regular Euro Pale Lager.

Mouthfeel: Thin and sort of watery.

Drinkability: Drinkable, and a good session beer. I wouldn't mind having it again, but not something I would buy regularly. I like it well enough, but it seems like it has something missing.

Poured a dark reddish-brown with a small but very dense off-white head.

Smells of dark dried fruits, caramel and toffee.

Tastes of sweet caramel character, with a fair bit of fruity esters and caramel compounds. No hops, and very light on the bitterness. Definitely tilted towards the malty-sweet side. Medium-light to medium body.

Too sweet for my tastes. Hop it up a little to balance it out

Definitely one of my favorite ales. It has a very sweet, nutty/oaky, very slightly smoky flavor that doesn't get old. One 550 mL bottle is really nice at the end of a long day. And frankly, the only reason I don't enjoy this one more often is that I see it as a way to treat myself on a semi-special occasion.

I can drink this all day, just don't ask me how it tastes. There is much to be desired in the taste and smell categories. This tastes and feels watery and thin. Not much carbonation, so you can pound it, if thats your thing. Very mellow, toasty aroma with a sweet malty flavor. Hops are not all that noticeable.

As I said before, this is an easy drinking, old reliable, on draft anyway, from the college days, when drinking Newcastle was heady. Now its lackluster.

Had this on-tap at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Pours a clear brown color with amber highlights. Head is one-finger of off-white foam that dissipates into a wispy layer of bubbles on top. Lacing is alright.

Smells of toasted malt with hints of butter and nuts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet and toasted malt flavors are joined by a slight nutty flavor and ending with a soft bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. It's actually got a nice thickness with subdued carbonation making it pretty smooth.

Drinkability is good. Very easy to drink.

Overall this is one of the better widely available macros. It'll do in a pinch.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle

A_Absolutely beautiful shiny dark brown, translucent. Thin head that doesn't stay too long

S_Very earthy and nutty smell mixes with a hint of alcohol in a really nice way

T_Very nutty with a very slightly alcoholic aftertaste. Almost the best nut brown flavor I've ever had in a beer. Every nook and cranny is bursting with almond, pistachio, and a little bit of peanut

M_Somewhat thin and cleansing, lightly carbonated

D_Extremely easy to drink, completely unoffensive, a refreshing quality lends itself to drinking many of these brews

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Bright brown appearance that is only slightly hazy; small head

Smell: nothing distinctive at all, which also means there was nothing repulsive

Taste: definately has a nutty and hoppy taste; slightly bitter initially, but it dies down quickly

Drinkability: only had one available, but easily could've had several more; not great tasting, but it was a solid beer

The only good thing about this beer is that it is generally well priced and comes in a good sized bottle. The one I had was 550ml.

On the downside the beer tastes pretty bad, I have go along with those who say it tastes earthy and skunky. In fact every taste was a challenge. There was a sweetness there as well but that did not cover up the skunk.

The smell was also like an old skunky smell and pretty unpleasant i've got to say. Not recommended.

look: 3 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured from a 1pint bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance/Smell - Appears a dark roast brown with a ruby red hue. Looks thin and watery, although it's not transparent. Spotty lacing with little to no head. Smells very sweet, caramel like and skunky (Very uninviting skunky/grassy aroma!) Grassy, skunky and earthy notes dominate.

Taste/Mouthfeel - Tastes grassy, earthy, and skunky (Disgusting!) Very sweet as well. Nice sweet roasted caramel and malts come in well as it warms. Decent hop bitterness at the end. Mouthfeel is thin, to thin. Almost goes down like water. Lite-medium bodied.

Drinkability/Final thoughts - I cant imagine anyone drinking more than a few of these. This beer was attractive and appealing to me. However, the skunky, earthy and grassy notes where absolutely disgusting! I had this once before and it tasted exactly the same. So I'm pretty positive it wasn't a bad batch. Ill be sure to try again, just to be completely sure, but as of now, I'm not a fan.

Update! Tried for the 3rd time recently, and it wasn't all that bad. Missing body and a little carbonation, and those skunky/grassy flavors & aromas I mentioned where reduced down to earthy, herbal & grassy notes. Not real great in my opinion, but I say go for to see what you think. Cheers!

Rated 2/7/2006 (Tap @ BWW's CL):

Pours a reddish-brown color body, with a smallish slightly off-white head. Has an aroma of some malts, hops, sweetness, some flowers. Taste of malts, some sweetness, molasses, and is slightly bitter. Clean aftertaste of malts?

I really wasn't impressed with this ale at all. It pours a clean brown color, that only smells faintly of tea. The taste is very watered down, and in fact this is probably the most watery import that I have tried. There is only a slight taste of tea. I've had it once, and probably will never have it again.

Had on tap at 1899 Pub

a: pours dark but translucent brown color. Minimal head that reduces quickly

s: carmel and slight yeast

t: malt sweatness on the nose and hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Nothing too exciting here.

m&d: medium body for sure. Did not have enough carbonation for my liking. Not hard to drink but nothing too memorable

Better look elsewhere.

This is a decent brew that is easy to introduce others to something more interesting than typical American macro lagers. Served on tap in a glass mug at The Summit House in Yorba Linda, CA.

A: Deep clear brown - almost pecan in color. No head to speak of.

S: Caramel, bananas, soft yeast notes

T: Nutty flavor, slight hoppiness, no bitterness on the finish

M: Smooth. Not a lot of carbonation.

D: I can pound this down. Pour me another.

this is one i kinda slept on for awhile
but this beer is tied with Amstel for a good "go to beer" ( a beer that most places will have)

just a nice smooth brown ale, relativly cheap and easy to find

like most beers I like it better on draft if the lines are clean and the beer is cold, but I go to place that sells it in bottle and cans and it is drinkable and consitant under any of its mediums

this is also a great stepping stone for people that wanna get into more complicated "brown" ales such as Liefmans Goudenband and Petrus Oud Bruin

shouldnt be too hard to find, and def better than some other macros

Poured dark reddish brown into a goblet. A thin head rises and then quickly fades, leaving no lacing. Aroma is of cranberries and malt. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with a bit of carbonation, despite the lack of carbonation in the appearance. Taste is malt, crackers, nut, wood, with a faint hint of hoppiness just at the back end. Almost like the flavor wants to be there but falls just short. Drinkability is good due to the inoffensiveness of the brew. Overall not too bad. Despite all this, I think the rest of the sixer will be more suited for cooking.

I am not a huge fan of this beer, my brother loves it and it's all he drinks unless i can talk him into something else. Pours a golden red color, smells nutty, taste like...I have heard people say sawdust and that is a fair thing to say. I dont like the finish of this beer either its not a good taste and it just stick around

(From a limited, dated journal): red/dark amber in color, nutty caramel nose. Hints of almond in the taste and a soft finish; good sweet/bitter balance; hints of apple and raspberry? Or was that dinner... pleasant honey aftertaste. Overall a solid brown ale and, given its availability, I'd pick this up a few more times.

Appearance: Brown, some foam and little lacing. Overall pretty average, but that doesn't mean EVERYTHING in a good beer.

Aroma: Smells sweet. Has some malts and grains in it too.

Taste: Has a maltish sweetness to it which ends with a hop bitterness. The sweetness balances well with the slight hops, making sure its not malts and sugar or something

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied. Carbonation is okay. Goes down smooth

Drinkability: Not bad taste, low ABV, and light..so its good for a couple. Nothing excessively memorable though.

This was a "premium draft" at Applebees
Rich brown color with an nice head but it dwindled quickly.
Nutty mildly sweet aroma
Smooth mouthfeel and taste. Malty, nutty sweet taste and a really nice finish.

My friends and the waiter suggested this beer and I am glad I took the advice. I will surely be having this again. I loved it.

This is a beer, like Bass, that I tried years ago when they were in vogue. I know some people used to claim this was one of the supreme beers ever.... I've since learned that most of those that claim this don't really know too much about beer. Anyway, I was at a bar for dinner last night and the selection of items on draft was a little suspect. So it was time to jump in on a pint of Newcastle.

The beer came with absolutely no head at all. There was no lacing after drinking and no visible carbonation. The color was a clear Amber color with slight reddish tones.

For the life of me, I could not detect an aroma. Perhaps a subtle sweetness, but I may just have imagined that so I could write something here...

A basic Brown Ale flavor. Not much depth to speak of. Basic toffee/malt flavors with some sweetness. Did have the mineral flavor that I detect in some English ales. Someday I need to determine if this comes from the water or malt...

Mouth feel was light and fairly flat... It was drinkable, but so it water...

I've checked it off the list. No need to come back for more.

A: Clear red-brown color with a thick cream colored head.

S: Malt aromas were present; toffey, nutty and fruity.

T: Sweet, mild malt flavors, and a little brown sugar up front with a toasty grain flavor in the finish. Slight flowery hops in the aftertaste.

M: The beer feels a little bit thinner than it looks. Not bad, but could use a little more body. Carbonation is good.

D: Overall, this is an easy drinker. No dynamic flavors, but pleasent anyway.

Had this out of a bottle with no glass in sight. Nice dark color, hints of nutty in the nose.

Very smooth mouthfeel and a nutty, almost sweet finish.

Everyone at our table in the restaurant told me I wouldn't enjoy this beer, but I can't wait to buy a case.
