Poured into a pint glass. Nice copper color, 1-finger head that disappears quickly. Minimal lacing.

Faint aroma that is puzzling to me ... Malt? Berries? Really not strong enough to put my finger on it.

Taste is a quick malty/citrus jolt that is immediately overpowered by the carbonation. Nice bitterness on the finish, but nowhere near the malty, nutty flavors I would expect from an English Brown Ale.

Waaay too much carbonation, to the point where it feels (and tastes) like seltzer water with a spritz of ale tossed in.
A pretty tasteless and unsatisfying brew.

Does not compare on any level to my favorite Brown Ale by Legend Brewing of Richmond VA.

A: The pour is a clear light brown color with a finger of off-white head.

S: A surprisingly roasty aroma. Lots of toasted malts with a definite nuttiness (though the nuts seem somewhat burnt). Light grass aromas with some hints of toffee. There is a bit of a butter note, however.

T: Caramel, toffee, and lots of roasted malt. It's quite bitter and quite buttery. Lightly fruity (raisins, perhaps) with a definite grass flavor. Really not a good combination on the palate.

M: Very light in body, in fact, watery, with medium carbonation.

O: The nose started off okay, but once the butter crept in, it was all over.

Appearance: pours 1” foamy head that dissipates slowly and leaves significant lacing. Color is reddish brown. Mild carbonation bubbles.
Aroma: yeasty bread dough (like when a lump of dough has been left to rise), fruity hop aroma is mild but noticeable
Mouthfeel: watery and slightly sticky. Finish is very dry and somewhat astringent.
Flavor: the rye malt is clearly evident and provides a less sweet flavor than barley malt (at least in this brew. I have not tried other rye beers, so I do not know if this is normal). The rye has a bite that combines with a citrus peel hop flavor. Taste profile includes raisins. I would enjoy this more if the bitterness were better balanced with more malt sweetness.
Overall: Werewolf is good (not great) and is a decent addition to the rotating seasonal lineup from Newcastle.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

I missed out on Werewolf last year, mostly 'cause I couldn't find any singles. This year is different. Boom. This stuff pours a clear sunrise copper-amber topped by a half-finger of relatively short-lived off-white foam. The nose comprises toast, mild toffee, and a layer of dank dark greens pervading the background. The taste brings in more of the same, but this same is relegated to near-obscurity. What replaces it is an all-encompassing melange of extremely hard water and old-ass vegetables. Great. The body is a rather light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a pretty slick feel. Overall, this is just a bad mess of a beer, one that makes me wonder what the hell has happened to the Newcastle line.

Tastes of sweet malt, copper, a little spicy and soapy. Watery on the palate with copper aftertaste.

12oz bottle into Portsmouth snifter.
A: Pours a deep wooden amber with a couple fingers of greasy dark tan head that took its time fading into a thick film that left a sheet of fuzzy lacing down the glass.
S: Not sure what to make of this one. It smells like a bunch of old leaves and sticks tossed together with something sour.
T: There’s a strange caramel-like sweetness mixed in with a bunch of sticks and spices. There is also a bit of bitter hops and bready crust malt. I get a splash of cherry juice in the finish as well. Finish is watery, and the aftertaste is sour.
M: Medium-thin body with fuzzy carbonation and a slick mouthfeel that finishes dry.
O: Definitely not a fan of this one. Not that the original is a great beer, but I would take that over this anyday.

Bottle poured into a shaker pint. Medium-dark copper body with a thick but fairly unretentive frothy beige head. Light lacing.

Aroma is thick toffee and caramel. Spicy rye adds a nice touch. Grassy hops and a bit nutty, with a touch of toasted and roasted malts.

The flavor is a combination of burnt and toffee notes. Grassy hops, somewhat astringent. Burnt/bitter aftertaste in my mouth.

Thin and well-carbonated. Slick, oily mouthfeel.

I had heard less than flattering things about this beer, but decided to pick one up in a mixed 6-pack to see for myself. The aroma actually temporarily got my hopes up; it had a lot going on and the rye really added to it. However, this illusion faded after the first swallow. This is not a particularly pleasant beer to drink.
