Picked up a 6er at my local Vons grocery store earlier tonight. 4.5% ABV confirmed. I love a good Irish Red Ale, so I'm excited to try this in spite of its current low ratings (3.2 rAvg) and my dislike for Caledonian. "Blood red ale." Brewed with Rye Malt. It doesn't actually self-identify as an Irish Red Ale, but I think it's safe to say it's either an Irish Red or an American Red (Amber). 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with fun label art and branded pry-off cap served into a flared stem-snifter in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live.

Served cold, straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger wide head of light khaki colour. Decent creaminess and thickness.
Average to above average retention - about 2-3 minutes. A bit of lacing as the head recedes. No "legs" per se.

Body colour is a dark caramel; somewhat dull. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Semitransparent. Translucent.

Not much to look at, and if it's supposed to be an Irish or American Red it's missing the mark.

Sm: Sweet caramalt. Very English in character. Nutty and toasty. Rye, but no accompanying spiciness. Light moist cardboard but no traces of oxidation; definitely an off flavour. Clean barley. Biscuit malt. English malts. Some brown malt. No yeast character, hop character, or alcohol comes through. Very narrow. Not real appealing, to be honest. A mild strength aroma.

T: Hm. Definitely English in character, with biscuit malt, heavy caramalt, some toffee, brown malts, and light toast. The rye is hardly noticeable; no spiciness at all. Vague nuts, but I can't discern which. Too sweet. Third act and finish is all cardboard. Generic. Hop profile is barely noticeable, but I guess it's generic and grassy. I get some artificial berry syrup of some sort about the climax. Tastes like a homebrew extract beer. No real artful balance. No subtlety or complexity.

Average flavour duration and intensity. Low depth of flavour.

I don't get any yeast character or alcohol. It does have the aforementioned cardboard off flavour. I'm not a big fan of this stuff.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Too thick and syrupy for the lack of flavour depth or diversity. Overcarbonated. Not gushed, hot, or biting. Suits the flavour profile in a generic sense.

Dr: This is by no means an Irish Red, so it's currently misclassified. It's an English style of some sort - maybe a shitty English Mild? ABV is barely hidden even though it's low. Quality is fairly low so it's a biteen hard to drink. I'm not looking forward to the other five bottles. Another subpar offering from Caledonian/Newcastle. I wouldn't touch this again. Certainly a below average brew.
