Pours an elegant amber, with strong ruby tones. Excellent suds and beautiful, detailed, intricate lacing.

Aroma is enticing -- slightly roasty and malty, with a tinge of fruit and Fall spice.

Taste is nice, with a little tart fruitiness up front, followed by a definite rye-grain flavor, and a bit of a bitter followthrough.

A very solid and enjoyable brew from Newcastle, and probably my favorite of their expanding lineup.

Ah, Fall. Time for Halloween-themed seasonal beers. I had not seen this one before and decided to try it out, as I am a fan of the Lupine horror films. Well, that and it was on sale.

Served in a chilled tulip glass.

-Appearance 4.0: Poured out an amber color, not "Blood Red" as advertised. Very nice 1/2 inch head that stuck around as creamy swirls on top and the sides.

-Smell 4.0: Interesting bouquet: I smell slight cinnamon hints with a big barley punch and then some hoppiness. Appetizing.

-Taste 4.0: Front is slightly sour, but has some nice barley hints. Middle is slightly spicy (must be the Rye) and has more slight sourness. Finish is short and dry and features some subdued but strangely assertive hops and more rye spiciness. Aftertaste is also short and dry and hits you with more of the barley/rye. Unusual and enjoyable.

-Mouthfeel 3.5: The level of carbonation in this brew really adds to the enjoyment of the beer.

-Overall 4.0: Very good beer that is worth a try. Would be a fantastic session beer as the under 5% ABV would allow you to enjoy several without changing into a creature of the night. I think ol' Larry Talbot himself would be proud. Now go howl at the moon... .

Once again, my local, in-person trader, tone77, has dropped off some interesting bottles that I may not have picked up myself, but it keeps me honest instead of just CANtinuing with The CANQuest (TM).

From the bottle: "Escaped From Britain"; "From the One & Only [shredded as if by claws]"; "Blood Red Ale"; "Formidable Beast"; "What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally 'blood red' in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!"

Yo, thiz iz madd real, yo! As is my wont, I employed an aggro pour, allowing it to flow freely out of the bottle, which in turn began a pseudo-cascade that produced three fingers of dense, tawny head with great retention. I would put the color more as deep-copper (SRM = X), as opposed to "blood red", but neither am I going to quibble. Clarity was button-bright and I was ready to begin howling in response. Warren Zevon was doing "Werewolves of London" on YouTube and so begins the day. The nose had a strawberry/raspberry scent underlain by a bready maltiness. Mmmm. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was quite unexpected, even given the label's verbiage. It had an initial kiddie-candy like flavor that was overtaken fairly quickly by a tangy bitterness. Finish was semi-dry, with the rye giving it a slight bite at the end. This was an easily quaffable beer and disappeared more quickly than I realized.

12 oz. bottle poured into mug

L: red ... 100% amber with some brown; holds a good thick off-white head, over 1/2 inch, pushing a full inch, and it didn't need a big pour to get it to percolate; a little bit of stick and lace, but more impressive -- one fantastic collar, almost looks like a Belgian

S: malty malt and malt goodness ... light and sweet, very nutty; just a hint of grain when it's cold

T: English malt ... reminds me of every good pale ale and brown ale I've had, sweet bready malts with just a pinch of spice bite from the hops; the rye might be in there but it's hard for me to distinguish, perhaps just a bit of a sour wheat note; malt sometimes gives a chocolate note

F: very strong, great carbonation, super drinkable

O: love it. it's much like the brown ale from Newcastle but with a definitive twist, I'm assuming from the rye

Poured into a standard pint glass.

The beer is a deep ruby/mahogany color. A dark cream colored head dissipates rapidly to a layer of bubbles. Very light lacing is present.

The beer smells roasted, toasty, and malty with a faint spiciness.

The taste is clouded by a metallic, sharp note at first that gives way to some roasted malts. There's a nice rich spicy body in this that I enjoy. In the end, a muted hop presence occurs.

Mouthfeel is bright, carbonated.

Overall, I like this one, because I do love Irish Reds. It's got some metallic carbonation in here that reminds me that it's not from a tiny craft brewer, but that's fine. Enjoyable red ale for me.
