Founders' Ale makes me think about what beers were like before palated evolved to enjoy darker and richer ales. Now largely placed in Mild Ale catagories, this is just one beer that easily represents a wide range of tastes in a rustic and elementary fashion.

The beer pours with a bright and light tawny brown color. A partly froathy, partly fizzy head forms and rests on the beer but only momentarily. A slowly fading head and lace gives in just a bit too soon to endure the session.

Mild aromas that are partly of malt and partly of grain gives a mild caramel and raw barley aroma that accompany a balance of herbal and earthy hops with a delicate spice. Slight fruitiness sings the praises of English ales and gives intrigue as the mouth draws near.

Flavors seem to carry a more malty taste than grain, but does eventually waiver to allow the taste of barley and husk to emmit in the finish, as the sweeter caramel malt components fade into dryness. Modestly balanced with a light herbal and grassy note at mid palate, the beer's hop profile ushers in a balanced bitterness in finish. Lightly fruity to offer a soft note of complexity to complement the hops/malt dialogue.

Light to moderate in body, the beer's early carbonated creaminess is short lived as the dry-malt and hoppy bitterness ushers in a quick development toward dryness, which reveals a slight grainy and tannic bite to present themselves.

This is by no means a stellar beer, but it is a timid approach to how I imagine early English Mild Ales might have tasted. Certainly not offensive, but a very light ale all arround.

Pretty average brew! When it comes to pale ale's its appearance was the color I expected but the lace was not there. The smell was very light I smelled more yeast smells than hops. The taste is fine it is a good beer, the mouthfeel is light and overall I would not buy it in a 6 pack but that is my opinion.
