On-tap 5/1/2012 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub, in Pawtucket, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma contains light caramelized malts, honey and some hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and honey. Then a hearty but not too heavy malt character comes in. The hops presence is very mild but brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sweet.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are others that are better in the style.

A - Poured out a clear, golden amber color with a one-finger, egg shell white head of foam. It left some sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of caramel, sweet breads and floral notes.

T - It tasted of sweet bready malt with some caramel and toffee. It had a grassy bitterness I associate with an English pale.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a nice pale ale. I enjoyed this new Newcastle.

Bottle > Winter Lager Glass

A - Pours a dark gold/light amber color, with half a finger of head, medium lacing.
S - Some baking flour, lager yeast, floral hops, and a little fresh cut grass.
T - This tastes and drinks much more like a lager than a pale ale, with just a few more hops, and some light fresh baked bread kinda malt.
M - Clean and smooth, nice finish for refreshment.
O - While not the worst, this is decently sessionable with some moderate flavors that make for a good hoppy lager, but its far off from a pale ale.

a - Clear copper body, white head drops quickly leaving behind a little bit of lacing.

s - Caramel dominates, toasty, hard to detect anything other than a bit of grassy hops.

t - Caramel up front, crisp, well balanced, hop bitterness is detectable but doesn't add much to the flavor profile. Slight bit of vegetable to it throughout.

m - light mouthfeel complimented by crisp taste

o - Nice balanced beer, let it get a bit warmer for it to open up.

Pours clear copper with a decent head, but weak retention. A little skim showing towards the end. No lace. Brown bottle - for Newcastle?

Some toasted malt, a little caramel, some bitter herbal notes.

Decent toasted malt with moderate hop bitterness. Some slight sweetness, but balanced out with some good toasted grain notes and light bitterness in the finish. I was surprised how easy drinking this was.

Medium body, good carbonation.

One of Newcastle's better offerings. Good balance, not over sweet. I had this with lunch and it was great with food. Worth a shot.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Pint glass
From: VONS in Grantville (San Diego, Calif.)
Price: $8.49 for a 6-pack
Purchased: Feb. 7, 2013
Consumed: Feb. 7. 2013
Misc.: N/A

Poured a caramel amber clear color with about one finger of bubbly off-white head that dissipated very fast. Minimal lacing on the sides. Very bad retention.

Smelled skunky malts up front. Also bread, hay, cereal, honey and light lemon grass. Some amber-like malts come in late.

Tasted much better than the smell. Got honey, light lemon, cereal, hay bread and a metallic finish.

Light-to-medium body. Thin texture. Average-to-lively (above average) carbonation. Abrupt finish. Somewhat refreshing.

Decent beer. Nothing to great, nothing too bad.

This is a good English pale ale.

Amber, small off-white head soon thinning to foamy ring and wisps.

Aroma is nutty toasted bread, grain, hint of baked apples, leaves & tea.

Taste is bread dough, metal hint, peppery-leafy bitterness dominating finish gently, with faint hint of caramelised grain. It is fairly simple but well-rounded, solid, balanced, and enjoyable.
