On tap at the brewery.
The appearance was a ruddy dark brown coming close to black towards the center for the color. Just a whimsical little white foamy head swiftly glided off to leave just a touch of lace.
The aroma had dark chocolate shavings, some dark fruits, moderate amount of roastiness with coffee then a whiff of salt for that Four Quarters creativity that's always enjoyable and in a way a good surprise.
The flavor yields towards the sweet side initially and seems to mesh the dark chocolate to the dark fruits and roast then adds just a hint of birch/dark licorice up in the mix. Nice mobile aftertaste of dark chocolate with some sweet findings of dark fruit, milk chocolate, roastiness and salt.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a conducive sessionability. Good sturdy ABV with an appropriate carbonation. Enough grip from the salt but mobile. Sly roasty but sweetly dark chocolate in the finish.
Overall, a bit different than an Euro styled Baltic Porter but honestly, I really can't be offended because what Brian does with this just seems to hit the spot entirely and totally on cue! It's a real treat and though I don't always drink this style during the Summer, it helped break up the Summer slammers of sour, tart, salty and hoppiness.

A: Growler brown and seemingly clear when it's shallow enough in the glass for backlight to shine thru. Light tan-cream colored head.

S: Chocolate and licorice--both anise and fruity variety. Wood-floral-earth spice reminiscent of vanilla bean, birch, and cocoa.

M: Buttery, creamline feel. A dry astringency and solid carbonation level keeps this medium bodied and drinkable even on warmer days. Good attenuation.

T: Red berries, plum, and decadent chocolate flavor...richness of a lava cake with a tart raspberry sauce. Sweetness, however, subsides into a nutty caramel, and finishes with peppery, snappy herbal flavor. Pretty straightforward tasting, malt laden beer. Not overly complicated nor complex; but, the flavors here are well-defined and developed. Don't look for the sea salt to feature prominently in flavor as much that it's there to punctuate the sweetness of the the malt, and in the end makes for a dry and savory sip.

Tasted on 2018-02-24 at the Ginger Man in Boston. The description is, "Baltic Porter with sea salt & chocolate ".

Near black in color. No light passes. Beige head with a good blanketing of lace.

The smell is of semisweet chocolate with brandy notes in the background.

The taste starts mild with solid chocolate flavors. The swallow, though, becomes very spicy with black patent malt dominating. The finish also had a dry berry flavor, some alcohol warmth, and black pepper. The body is neutral as is the carbonation. The aftertaste is dry with a nearly Baker's chocolate tongue.
