The wife and I were surprised to find this bar while heading to a Vampire Weekend concert at the Brady Theater. The Brady Arts District looks fantastic, with the Guthrie Green, a new arts center, art galleries, bars galore and a pricey chocolate store. Tulsa has grown by leaps and bounds lately, and this area is a prime example.
But even within this cool 'hood, I just did not expect a bar like Valkyrie that looks more SoHo-meets-Los-Angeles than Oklahoma. Picture an industrial loft, perfectly but casually decorated and a classy-chill atmosphere where both hipsters and posh types can chill together.
They specialize in cocktails, which are mighty nice but take a bit to craft so be prepared. Their beer list is very good as well, with 14 taps emphasizing American brews and a bunch of Germans (something about Tulsa's love for the Reinheitsgebot).
During my visit they had Crown Valley Big Bison, Boulevard SingleWide IPA, Tallgrass Oasis, North Coast Brother Thelonius, Left Hand Milk Stout, Paulaner, Spaten Optimator, Kostritzer Schwartz and more. Then I had Boulevard on Rye on Rye, Green Flash 30th and more.
They serve no food but there are plenty of restaurants around the Brady District. While not on the level of McNellie's, this is nonetheless one of the best beer bars in Tulsa.
