Much of a pint can pour fit into a a clear pint glass. It's as close to black as any brew you will find. Not much for providing a remarkable head, nor much glass lacing. There is an earthy aroma to foreshadow the taste. That turns out to be a very nice thing and just as the nose predicted, a little earthy. With enough hoppy bite to acknowledge it's not a porter, nor a black lager. It's an interesting black IPA and worth trying.

Dark brown on color with dark ruby red highlights on the edge of the glass and a hazy appearance. Poured with a tall, tan, sticky, soapy foam moderate retention. Medium dark roasted and dark malt aromas with dark chocolate and light herbal hop notes. Medium bodied with soft, medium carbonation. Medium dark roasted malt flavors up front with dark chocolate and sweet dark malt notes. Medium, herbal bitter hoppiness through the middle that seems to meld with dark roasted malt bitterness to the end. Finished semi-dryly with lightly charred and bitter dark roasted malt and hop flavors. Tasty, roasty malt character that combined nicely with hop bitterness.

not enough of these out there, especially on the east coast side of things. an excellent example of the style here, balancing some robust flavors rather expertly. its very dark brown, and only in the brightest light can a little red be seen. the head is superbly tall, creamy, tan colored, and lasting. gorgeous in my globe from the pint can. i get the roast from the dark barley right away, bitter and ashy, almost burnt, all the way down on the spectrum. the hops are piney and northwestern in nature, also very bitter, but with enough late kettle or dry hopping to make it very aromatic and flavorful as well. pine and citrus peel together, a little oily, but not too much body on this. definitely feels lighter than a stout or a porter in body. creamy still though, rich feeling, not thin in the least, just more drinkable than those styles generally are. the hops linger even longer than the roast in the finish, and a nice earthy nuttiness comes on late as well. no sweetness here at all, not even in the middle. a fine example of a style of beer i am personally really into right now. very well made beer here.

A- Deep brown, near black. Head is brown, foamy. Good retention, very nice lacing.
S- Roast, caramel, pine, citrus pith.
T- Primarily roast/coffee. Citrus and pine.
M- Medium full body. Semi-dry finish. Goes down pretty easy, finish isn't long.
O- Pretty good. One of the more tame black IPAs I've had.

My thanks to the Conshohocken brewers & owners for providing me with CANs for inclusion in The CANQuest (tm)! I hope to run through a bunch of them today. This should be a good time.
From the CAN: "Go Where the Path Takes You"; "Doll's Eye CDA is a hoppy dark ale with pleasant notes of malt roastiness. Doll's Eye is brewed with generous amounts of Cascade and Nugget hops, giving our CDA its piney and floral hop character."
Please don't gush, please don't gush, I thought to myself as I readied the Crack! Success! An inverted Glug to celebrate was now in order. Whoops! Unlike The Who, who Won't Get Fooled Again, I got renewed foaming & gushing! Fellas, could you ease up on the CO2? I must say, though, that the three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head was astounding. It was going to take some time to fall before I could CANtinue my pour. CANticipation, it's making me wait. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), but it was not opaque at all. In fact it had NE-quality clarity with garnet highlights. Nose smelled of light smoke, charcoal, spearmint, dark chocolate & pine tar. Hmmm. Generally, I eschew this style since the dark roasted malts tend to kill the hops, but we shall see. Mouthfeel was medium-to-fill, approaching, but not quite creamy. The taste was initially minty & piney, but then the dark malts began to assert themselves, muscling the hops out of the way. Think of it as a buncha young ladies happily pogoing in front of the stage when suddenly a group of skins show up and turn it into a violent mosh pit. Finish had the skins running the girls out is stark terror. Too much dark malt for this hophead. It isn't the beer, per se, it's the style, but if you brew it & put it in a CAN, expect that I am not going to be happy with it as a self-avowed hophead.
