Spinnakers "Titanic Strong Stout" @ 7.75% , served from a 650 ml bottle
A-pour is oh so dark brown that it's almost black , very little head although the pint glass has some spotty lace ring after every sip
S-weak smelling
T-smooth , yet not that crisp , a refined richness in the taste
MF-ok carbonation , medium/full body
Ov-pleasant ok/good beer , not as aromatic as the label claims

cheers LampertLand

Bought this at the Spinnakers Wine Merchants in James Bay on a recommendation from a friend and co-worker, very glad I did. I've always found Spinnakers beers to lack carbonation, but in this style that quality works perfectly. This brew is seriously dark, inky black in colour and pours with almost no head. Roasted coffee dominates the mild aroma, and it also has some kind of brown and/or burnt sugar thing going. Very cool. The texture is not overly thick, with a distinct oily feel. Huge chocolate flavour, nice and rich, with a subtle dry finish. Beware the booze on this one, it sneaks up on you at almost 8% because there is no alcohol burn. Before last weekend (when I tasted their divine Pumpkin Porter), I would have said this is my favourite Spinnakers brew. After the pumpkin though, it has slipped to Silver medal. As far as the stuff they actually bottle though, it still is Golden :)

A: Black with a tan head, very thin ring of retention leaves a bit of lace.

S: Roasted nuts & coffee, light demerara, slightly grainy, hints of apple & pear-like esters.

T: Treacle and coffee, light nut & cocoa, grainy biscuit, modest bitterness, alcohol is subtle.

M: Well-attenuated, not much residual sweetness, actually seems a bit thin, the alcohol isn't drying, but there's a dry roasty finish.

O: Overall it's a fine brew, but nothing is spectacular.

Pours almost black in colour with absolutely no head. Smell is not very strong, moctly coffee and malts. Taste is pretty much the same - coffee - really nice. Nice bitter finish. Mouthfeel is actually really crisp, surprisingly for stout, beer is really smooth with medium body and very well balanced. It's really drinkable, alcohol is hidden well in this beer. Anf it's really warming too. Nice beer for long winter nites I think.

Pitch black with a thin beige head, not much retention. Chocolate malt, brewer's licorice, some molasses on the nose. Smokey roasted malts, licorice and molasses in the flavour. Smooth mouthfeel, but lacks some body. Definitely a pleasure to drink however.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color stout with a big dark foamy head with some good retention and small ring of lacing. Aroma consisted of vinous notes with some sourness. Taste was also dominated by some sourness and some rotten grain. Body was thin and watery. No traces of roasted malt or hops were discernable. This appeared to be a bad bottle and based on prior ratings seems there is quite a few out there.

I enjoyed this stout due its decent chocolate notes and balanced finish. There is enough bigness to the body to warrant the imperial monicker but ultimately the key is its drinkability. A solid offering from Spinnakers and hopefully rebadged later on under another name.

This was great on tap and my first bottle of it was good too. My last two bottles however, are such a marked decline in quality that this warrants another new review.

The appearance is still spot on, but the smell now, is chemical, astringent and mechanical. Flat, almost nothing stout like about it.

The taste is sour, off and there is almost a penicillin like taste that is reminsicent of a strong Stilton or Roquefort. This is combined with a slightly salty, metallic flavour. Hints of chocolate, but these aren't very powerful.

The only nice thing about this is that the flavour doesn't burn the tongue. This is almost a complete 180 from my experience having this on tap and my first bottle. Not sure what happened, but at this point I won't be sad to see this go. I eagerly anticipate the return of their Irish or Imperial stout.

The pint appeared with beer pumped up from a basement tank, carbon black and with a finger of brown foam. The smell was very pleasant: chocolate, some coffee and red berries. Not much carbonation. The taste was of sooty ashes, but surprisingly bland and watery for a imperial stout, and with a touch of sweetness at the end. To be honest, it wasn't that good and quite a disappointment considering the Spinnaker hype. Can't recommend anything about it, except the smell. Made me long for a Rasputin.
