Solid, but not spectacular brewpub located just off Highway 50 in Sacramento. Lots of space at Hoppy, but the ambience could be a little nicer. Pretty dark, which is OK, not sure it entirely works, but that's quibbling, I suppose.

Long bar and numerous tables for eating. Never seen it too crowded, except at the bar. A couple TVs on either end of the bar and a few throughout the restaurant as well.

Beer is right in the solid, almost consistently good category. Some are pretty tasty, others somewhat mediocre. They do vary it up a little, but not too much. I do try to taste something new every time I stop in, and usually am able to do so. They sell bombers and beer cubes (instead of growlers) to go. As I sort of mentioned, some beers are tasty, others OK, but nothing is going to blow you away.

Hoppy is right off the freeway, so I would certainly recommend it if you are driving up 50 to South Lake Tahoe. One of the better brewpubs in Sacramento, and I'm not sure if that reflects better on the brewpubs in Sacramento or Hoppy itself.

Atmosphere - As you walk up to the front door there's a seating area outside. When you get in the bar is straight ahead and the dining room is to the right. The back wall is glass that separates the restaurant from the decently large brewery. It pretty much looks like any other restaurant out there nothing really sets it apart.

Quality/Selection - During my visit they had nine house beers on tap that cover some good styles. I was happy that two of the beers were smoked beers. Their beers also ran from bad (the Blonde with Rye) to very good (Smoky Jacket).

Service - I visited during the end of the lunch rush so when we first got in it was a full place. The hostess didn't tell the waitresses that she sat us so it took sometime for one to realize we needed help. After we put our order in I was a little surprised how quickly the food came out to us.

Food - I ordered the Hawaiian Hog sandwich with fries and the sandwich was very good the fries were just ok at best. The wife ordered a burger with kettle chips she said the burger was good but the chips weren't that good.

Overall - This is a pretty decent spot to grab some beers and a meal worth checking out if your nearby.

This place is off of Folsom boulevard, close to Sac state and midtown. It's a pretty good sized brewpub with quite a few tables. We went during "hoppy hour" on a Saturday afternoon, $3.50 pints.

They have roughly a dozen brews on tap year round. Most choices are typical styles and there's always a pair of seasonal specialties. The beers are good and prices are reasonable. If you want something hoppy; the amber ale is actually more of an IPA and boasts more bitterness than their pale ale which claims to have more IBU's. Nonetheless, both were tasty.

Service was good. We sat at a table, the bar was pretty busy even during slow hours. Our server was good and seemed to know his way around beer.

All we had for food was calamari, which was good. The portion, for an appetizer, was plenty. Anyone strolling through Sac should stop in.

This is a very dirty brewpub. I was appalled at the number of cockroaches I saw while there. I shouldnt have to see one, let alone start to count. The brewery is in a very questionable area of Sacramento and you'll not be surprised if your car is vandalized or stolen while youre there (as my former roommates was). I really wanted to like this place as they are pretty well locally known. Dive bars are ok, but this is the first dive brewpub Ive encountered. The beer was uneventful and average, and lukewarm, and after the roach encounters, I didnt even want to try the food. Spend your money elsewhere

First off, I loved the façade with its bright yellow (gold) smiling sun against a deep black back ground. Stillers, anyone? There was an extensive outdoor patio with patio furniture overlooked by a wide glass façade with a door in the center. The m.d.s. was just inside the door with the restaurant area to the right. Standard tables and chairs lined the windows with a long line of upholstered booths along the right wall. The brewhouse was behind glass, all of the way aft. The bar was center, past the merchandise and had a pretty sun and river mural above it. There was more seating left with a private room with a working fireplace all of the way left. "Great food, awesome beer, cool people."

Beers: Golden Nugget Cream Ale-5.0; Liquid Sunshine-5.0; Blonde Ale; Heff-As Weizen-5.4; Stony Face Red Ale-5.6; Burnt Sienne Ale-6.9; Total Eclipse Black Ale-6.6; 2 seasonals-Hoppy Clause-7.8; Party Dropper-9.0; also Hoppy Face Amber-6.1.

Mom Test: Heck, yes! She brought me here for lunch.

Visited Hoppy before taking our son the the zoo. There's a nice outdoor seating area in the front so we stayed outside and our son could run around and have fun without causing too much trouble. Atmosphere was nice but a bit odd...i kind of expected a low key disorganized bar-type place but it was clean and had a bit of a sports bar-meets-TGI Friday's feel. They even had crayons for our son and dinner rolls before the meal. Our waiter seemed very underwhelmed with the world, joyless, even. He described the beers by their name, followed by ABV, followed by style, which was odd. I went with their Stony Face Amber, which was fine, though a bit over-bitter for the style and not at all balanced. My wife got the hefe, which was much better and a nice summery beer. Food was tasty, if a tiny bit bland. Fries was good. This was kind of a 'meh' place for me as a drinker, but as a dad with a rambunctious 1 year old, i liked the outdoor setting so maybe we'll even head back at some point.

Easy to find location a few blocks from downtown, near Sac State. Nice atmosphere with a lot of wood detailing. A couple of TVs over a good sized bar carrying sports. Fair size restaurant floor opposite the bar with a few tables around the side if you want to get away from the TV and crowd noise. I've stopped by a few times when visiting in-laws in town. Friendly crowd with a mix of college age kids to older folks. I've never had their food.

They carry about seven regular offerings along with a few special brews. Beer has been above average for brewpub product. Maybe because it is nearby a college campus that it seems the staff initially pitches the beers by ABV rather than style? They seem to have a fair grasp of the brews upon further inquiry. Typically there are 2 or 3 of which I think are worth a second visit. Their 8.9% One Love Ale, an imperial red style, is worth seeking out.

Atmosphere is a bit funky with trippy paintings mixed with typical open ceiling design. It's somewhat close to Sac U. so there's some younger crowd, but not a lot. The space is definitely welcoming inside and there is an outdoor seating area with a view of beautiful Folsom Blvd. The menu is more upscale than average, but still has some pub standards. There were plenty of choices that I was interested in, but I went with the pizza. Not bad, not great. I scored a free sticker and fridge magnet just for asking. Cool. The beers I had were the Hefe, Blunt'd Bitter (seasonal), Hoppy Face Amber, Yakima Roll Wasabi Ale (seasonal) and the Burnt Sienna Ale. For the most part they were all above average with the Bitter and the Burnt Sienna being my favorites.

I can't add new beers yet, so here are two that aren't on the list:

Blunt'd Bitter (seasonal) - Orange copper with a sticky white head that disappates on top but leaves trails on the glass. Caramel and burnt notes in the nose. Some hop flavor character that gets beaten in to submission by the bitterness. In a very nice way. Finish hints at malt but has some hop notes. Very little to no flavor hop character. Very good. 5.2%

Yakima Roll Wasabi Ale (seasonal) - Straw color with a thin white head. Some malt in the nose with a hint of wasabi (not that I would have said this had I not known, but it's there). Flavor is odd at first because there really isn't much there, but the spiciness builds with each sip. My enjoyment builds as well. I could stand it to be more spicy, but I love wasabi. The spice dries out the finish a bit which I have found to be fairly common in homebrewed spicy beers. It doesn't scream "Wasabi!" but maybe that's a good thing. 4.7%

first off, the best thing about this brewery is the outdoor seating area. there are beautiful grape vines on everything. the beer selection is pretty good, about 12 beers some of them really good some a little mediocre. the atmosphere is great especially if you are an A's fan since everyone there seems to know an inordinate amount about the A's. the BLT with A was quite good. the service was ok but i am being generous since i was in the outside seating area since that can be a little tough on the server.

ultimately, i have absolutely nothing to complain about but it wasn't necessarily the best either. solid and worth a visit.
