Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BDTyre on 01-26-2005

There are some things in life that require a certain sense of bravado: these might include ordering a quadruple espresso, deciding to sleep without a nightlight, or choosing to live in a region of the continent that is gradually sinking into the Pacific Ocean. If you're no longer scared of the dark, then there's no reason to be afraid of our stout. A generous portion of rolled oats and lots of black roasted barley give this beer a warm, roasted nose, and a distinct dryness that succumbs to waves of lingering satisfaction.

650ml bottle - no mention of 'Heroica' on this offering, but I'll gather that it's the same thing.

This beer pours a clear, very dark brown colour, with two skinny fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and mostly just bubbly beige head, which leaves a bit of low-lying island profile lace around the glass as it evenly melts away.

It smells of grainy roasted caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, a certain breakfast cereal notion, hints of dry anise spice, yesterday's cold coffee, ethereal dead yeast, and soft earthy, weedy hops. The taste is semi-sweet, and mildly toasted caramel malt, cafe-au-lait, some tame brown sugar/molasses, gritty dark chocolate, and weak leafy, earthy hops.

The bubbles are pretty ineffectual in their meekly frothy nature, the body on the light side of your typical medium weight, and somewhat thin, even in its expected smoothness quotient. It finishes well off-dry, the cereal grains and muted caramel malt kind of budging everything else to the side, Sumo-san!

Not a bad version of the style, the oatmeal manifesting much more in the aroma and flavour than in the mouthfeel. Hardly a behemoth of a stout by any stretch of the imagination, but drinkable and enjoyable enough for when you might want to have a couple or a dozen during the course of an evening's activities. (1,309 characters)

This grew on me but was underperforming oatmeal. Light mouthfeel. well carbonated. Smooth, chocolate colour, but just not all that interesting.Dry and Bitterness.Too much coffee, and on the smoke rather that smooth, to turn my crank.

A: pure black; head is deep tan.
S: moka, root beer... low intensity
T: very little, thin; some black liquorice, bit of a dry finish ... where's the flavour? where's the finish?
M: medium-bodied
O: forgettable. Almost a dark ale rather than a stout. (249 characters)

Colour is almost pitch black. A finger of foam that quickly dissipates to a thin line and then a few islands. Fairly thick coating on the glass. Smell is roasted malt, toasty, a lot of coffee and some burnt chocolate. Taste is more of the same, with maybe a touch of something medicinal and some faint dark cherry syrup. Carbonation is a touch on the heavy side for this one, and the entire premise of oatmeal stout as a style--the oatmeal lending to a "silky smooth texture" doesn't really seem to follow through: it's a touch astringent.

Decently well-made, but doesn't do anything for me. So long as St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout is widely available in Canada, I can't see drinking this again. (694 characters)

Enjoyed a pint on tap while sitting at the bar.
Pitch black color, with a chocolate milk colored, creamy head. Good stability and lacing throughout. Some smokiness and lots of coffee smalls. Lots of roasted bitter coffee, cocoa and some more smoke flavors. Body was a bit light body, not quite the same rich smoothness in some other oatmeal stouts. Lots of flavor, not bad at all. (381 characters)

Steamworks Brewing 'Heroitca Oatmeal Stout' @ 5.0% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $6

A-pour is a dark brown almost black in the glass with a medium size tan head leaving a fine lace film along the pint glass after every sip

S-some sweet rolled oats , hints of coffee/espresso , some smokiness also

T-smooth taste but is a bit thin ,

MF-medium carbonation , full bodied , nice tartness on the palate

Ov-ok/good beer , not my favourite Oatmeal Stout but a ok/good beer still

sampled alongside R&B 'DarkStar' and Ninkasi 'Oatis'

I am transcribing this from notes that I took last summer. Poured on-tap at the Steamworks Brewing Pub in Vancouver, BC, it was served in a pint glass. The beer is almost opaque, with a very dark brown coloring and a very light milk chocolatey colored head that looked dense and foamy. Aromas are milk chocolatey and slight mocha/coffee. The beer had a great body, and left a wonderful lacing on the glass. Flavors of non-bitter milk chocolate and very light bittered roasted coffee, and they balance each other very well. The beer is extremely smooth, and surprisingly light in mouth for an Oatmeal Stout. Aftertaste is smooth and easy, making this an extremely easy drinker. Clean finish. (690 characters)

A: Black with a tan head, nice retention & lacing.

S: Faint aroma of roasted grains with hints of coffee.

T: This is a very smooth & mellow oatmeal stout. It doesn't have much depth to the flavour, but it's nice.

M: Light to moderate body is very smooth & creamy with an off-dry finish.

D: Quite drinkable. (310 characters)

Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown with two fingers of foamy tan head.

Smell - roasted malts, cocoa, coffee bean, earthy hops, oats, and hint of campfire smoke.

Taste - Starts off with the roasted malts followed by the cocoa, coffee bean, earthy hops, oats, and the hint of campfire smoke rounds out the brew. The brew drinks like a porter in my mind.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Finishes with a pleasant lingering bitterness from the coffee bean and the hint of smoke lingers as well.

Overall - A brew that has the elements in place for the style. I feel the body of the actual brew drinks like a porter and lacks the true elements of a stout. Some adjustments in that department would make this one a winner considering the pleasant bitterness from the coffee bean and hint of campfire smoke. (839 characters)
