Ah, Golden Monkey. Not seen in these parts for a couple years, since Victory's aborted attempt to distribute to central CA. This bottle was one of a mixed sixer hauled up from Hollyweird by BA and sometimes fellow beer tourist SkunkleDunkel. I Enjoyed the hell out of the GM back then, but I think I 've come across to many exemplary tripels since to really call this brew a winner.
Pours tawny gold, with a generous pour rendering a massive pillow of head. Smells sugary sweet, with a spicy clove-like aroma. A little yeasty.
A mouthfeel on the thin side yields a muted hoppiness, with a mellow sweetness. A little added zest from the spices added gets covered up by a subtle but pungent clove taste. As everything warms up, hints of bluberries and tropical fruit juice arise.
Not a bad beer, and a nice trip down memory lane, but I'd rather stick to drinking the California brewed Belgian styles.
