bottled february 04 (12oz size) pours a cloudy golden peach with an enormous fat frothy white head. good retention and lacing. very yeasty on the nose with subtle notes of pale fruits and spice. low to medium level of carbonation. thick and full bodied mouthfeel even when cold...perhaps a little too much for a tripel. big dose of biscuty maltiness, substantial horse blanket yeasty flavor, followed by a tart fruiteness and phenolic aftertaste. becomes slightly more spicy (clove) as it warms. alcohol is hidden pretty well, but you can feel the heat in the back of your throat somewhat on the way down. wouldn't want to have more than two in a row.
there are many better and more authentic versions of the tripel out there, but for a strong belgian golden ale, the monkey suits me just fine. i've had some off batches from time to time (when the flavors seem even more over the top than usual), but overall it's an enjoyable sipping brew.

It has a really nice color. Like you melted down your wedding band and made beer out of it. It doesn't smell really good so it's best to drink it in big gulps and not breathe through your nose while doing that. It's got something is in it like cinnamon but I don't know about herbs so it could be arsenic. All in all, it was good. But then again I've never met a beer I didn't like, scratch that, didn't drink.

A: Bright golden color with medium-high carbonation visible, 1/2 inch head.
S: Yeast and some slight hops.
T: Honey and tamed hops.
M: Medium body and carbonation. Slight alcohol finish.
O: My first Tripel, and I'm glad it is local and available year-round. A heavy punch for the price, good enough to try again.
