Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a stemmed goblet glass. Bottle says enjoy by Feb 16 2015.

Appearance: Pours a bright and hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head which fades into a thin patchy layer. Lacing is fairly light.

Smell: A pretty sweet aroma with lots of yeast. Belgian yeast with some clove and pepper spices. Lots of candied sugars. Bready biscuit malts. Good hints of banana. Hints of citrus orange and lemon. Also some hints of earthy hops lingering around. Smells solid.

Taste: Good dose of Belgian yeast. Nice spicy kick up front from cloves and pepper. Good amount of Belgian candied sugar. Bready malts along with some hints of banana. Nice citrus hop presence with good notes of orange and lemon. Light hints of earthy hops towards the finish. Pretty well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a moderate level of carbonation. Feels spicy and somewhat syrupy. Alcohol heat is hidden very well.

Overall: A pretty solid American take on a Tripel. Sugar and spices are well balanced. Nice citrus notes.

Although I am a big fan of Belgian-style tripels, this beer always seems like a bit of a mess to me. I get a hint of tripel in the smell, but it is washed out by the hops. Similarly, the taste hints at the tripel spiciness I am looking for, without ever really delivering on the promise. I honestly think labeling the beer a tripel works against it. It is more accurately a big, high-abv American experiment: part tripel, part IPA, part Frankenstein. While I do not think it is a good example of the style, the flavors might work for drinker looking for more hops than is typical in a tripel.
