Here again, I have to say "thanks" to the folks at Victory for bringing some of their beers into the Texas market. Golden Monkey is a fine addition to the shelves here, and it's sure to please many a palate.

The Monkey looked great on the pour, with a cloudy, light straw look and a firmly compacted head of foam. The nose was sweet and effervescent.

The taste was complex and interesting. Grapeseed flavors mingled with rosehips and cloves. Hop presence was definitely there, but kept in balance with the malts. Very interesting beer. Not a hint of the 9.5% ABV to be found in the taste. Excellent effort.

Mouthfeel was very good, the carbonation leaping out and grabbing the drinker's attention. Very drinkable, but watch yourself with the high alcohol content. A most wonderful tripel from Victory.

Very impressed. Poured a little darker then a lot of belgians...very nice golden color. The spices are what make the beer. Hints of clove and orange peel, even a little bit of cinnamon in the finish. The beer is so balanced that the higher abv is almost undetectable.

A local liquor store found some stray beer in a recent renovation, including a six pack of Golden Monkey, bottled 4/25/07. Being one of my favorites fresh, I needed to try the aged version.

Poured into my Chimay goblet, the appearance was GM's typical lovely orange-gold. However, head retention was only hurt by age, and this is already a problem for this brew.

The nose is not the same in the aged version of Golden Monkey. The light malts come out more, with esters and spice taking a backseat. A little musty character from the Belgian yeast comes out that wasn't there before.

Taste-wise, the iso-amyl acetate (banana ester) has pretty much disappeared, and the malts and mustiness--much like an aged cheese--from the nose show up. Alcohol, strangely, seems more present but not unpleasantly so.

Mouthfeel is nice; the perhaps somewhat overcarbonated GM is now very smooth. Drinkability--for a 9.5% beer--remains high, but the alcoholic presence tempers it very slightly.

Overall, this brew is much more well-balanced than the young version, but I really miss the esters. I think I really love Victory's off-balance brews: they bring certain great flavors to the forefront. While the aged Golden Monkey is quite great (rivaling many Belgian Trippels I've had), it's not the same as the crazy young beer that got me into Belgians to begin with.

A: Pours a golden/orange color. A one finger white head forms. Light lace is left behind.
S: Sweet malt up front. Some funky barnyard aromas with some grass, hay, and yeast. A light citrus hop bite as the aroma lingers.
T: Sweet malt with some fruity flavors. Banana, apple, pear, and spicy clove. Funky barnyard flavors that I love. Some hoppy citrus flavors.
M/D: A medium body with a crisp snap of carbonation. The beer becomes more creamy as it warms up. Very refreshing. Incredibly smooth and easy to drink for the high ABV. I can do more than sip on this if I am not careful.

This is one of the better American Tripels I have had. Something I would highly recommend.

12oz bottle obtained via trade with Knapp85. Huge thanks for this one!! Poured into a Mikkeller tulip.

A hazy appearance with a nice, two-finger head of white foam that grips the edges of the glass and hangs on as a bit more than film. Colour is verging on old gold.

Spicy, yeasty aroma of cloves. Inviting and interesting. A little bit of pear comes through too.

Nice taste, complex, spicy as per the nose. Still very refreshing even for a beer this size. Well balanced. ABV is tucked well away and this avoids the vinous taste that some of the style seem to grab.

Mouthfeel is pretty well spot on. Very well sorted in this regard, a touch of dryness, interesting enough to keep you going back.

Overall, a very good beer, am loving this! Not too many Tripels that i jump at other than Westmalle, but this is impressive!

I found this at a small local market with a nice craft beer selection in Lowell, a little pricey at $14/six pack but the quality has had me come back and buy it at least 8 times since I first tried it. It's a spice-laden ale with some nice mouth feel that hides it's fairly high ABV well--great for sipping at the end of a hectic day and feeling it slowly unravel your overtaxed mind.

Pours cloudy golden with a fizzy white head an inch thick. Small sediments make their way through the beverage. The head has good retention as it laces the glass nicely as I consume this beer. Aroma is spicy. Orange peel/orange curaco. Nutmeg. Cinnamon. Very nice. This beer has some taste. There's a bit of alcohol. There's a bit of hard candy. There's some spice, including cinnamon and pepper. A bit lemony. Tangy. All of this backed up with a nice belgian malt backbone. Very complex beer. Has a light-to-medium body I would say. Very drinkable for a beer with this much alcohol.

Bottle review from 15DEC02...
Slightly cloudy, dullish golden color, with a small, fine head and a bit of lace left in the glass....; I like it's nose...spicy, fruity and a touch yeasty.... Has a pretty good mouthfeel, overall. Body is medium, and it travels over the tongue in a smooth manner. Going down it has a nice combo of fruity flavors, spiciness, yeasty notes, and some traces of pepper...leaves you a tad warmer than before... Real nice!! (Original bottle review: 08JAN02...4.50, re-review 15DEC02).

On-tap review from 07JUL02...
Fresh from the Victory taps... Lovely cloudy, medium- golden color, though a very small head and minimal lacing. Wonderful nose! Sharp and spicy, with some sweetness! Good body, and nice over the tongue, especially towards the last half of the pint. Great semi-sweet malt and candi-sugar-like flavor, along with a sharp, Belgian-style spicy bite. Better as it warms...Superb! (4.0/4.5/5.0/4.0/4.5 - 4.55)

Pours with a nice head but this disapates fast due to the ABV%. Sweet complex nose. The taste beats the tongue with honey sweetness and a yeast/clove taste.. the finish is dry. This brew is not for the timid, but you will will be rewarded with a "mindblow" of a beer if you try it... Watch out for the 9.5 ABV....

poured a beautiful golden color with decent white head and bubbles that just will not quit. The smell is hard to describe (bananas??) but I love it. The first taste is superb, and each additional sip is even better. The felling it leaves in my mouth is complex and long-lasting. A winner !!!!

Pours a hazy but vibrant medium gold with a touch of amber and some floating particles. It has a small, white, foamy head with good retention. Very fresh smelling. Banana, berry, orange, clove, melon and cilantro. The taste is light, fresh and mouthwatering. Very good wheat flavors and a moderate sweetness balanced out by a floral hops presence. The finish is fruity and lightly dry. It has a medium body and slick texture. This is wonderfully done, well balanced triple that I recommend trying.

Glowing golden orange, semi-hazy with a foamy white head that is suprisingly not giant as with many tripels, but still holds good retention. Delightful aroma. Very pleasantly and mildly spiced, with a lot of fresh fruits including tangerine, peach, apricot, all blended with banana yeast scents, sweet bread, honey and a touch of grass. Smells like a warm delicious Spring breeze. Tastes equally great. Ah yes this is why I love beer. A bit of tartness puts a spin on the high carbonated Belgium flavors with a mouth watering dry finish. Deceptive alcohol blends smoothly with the sweet and spice and softly warms the head. Really really really drinkable whether its 9.5% or not.

Mmmm beer, to say the least. This is a beer that I will have to get again.

A: Pours just as the name states a golden color with 1 finger width white head and really no lacing down the glass.
S: Smell is fruity, also has a good deal of spiciness. You can also smell the alcohol.
T: Tastes of sweet fruit (pear, apple). Has a little apple cider hint to it.
M: Perfect amount of carbonation not too much not too little.
D: Wow, maybe I should have eaten a little something before drinking this because I fell all warm and fuzzy in the belly now!! Great smelling and tasting tripel, good all the way around. Would for sure have this again. I bet this tastes wicked good from the source on tap. Thanks to nlmartin for this one, you da man!!

Growler received via a trade with jonjon...
Poured a golden/yellow/orange with a half finger white head that becomes sticky lacing just like from the bottle except with less carbonation.
Aromas of bread, candy malt, tropical fruits (tangerines, oranges, papayas, bananas) and belguim yeast.
Taste is considerably fresher, cleaner, and brighter than from the bottle (no doubt due to the freshness of the brew) with more dimension and a gentle blending of all of the flavors.
Alcohol is deceptive and surprisingly abscent Aftertaste is very clean.
Unfortunately, if this were on tap in my area I could spend the whole day at the bar...maybe the weekend.

Cloudy peach-orange body capped with a thin finger of white head that dissipated fairly quickly but leaves a bit of lacing on the Ommegang glass; nice color, but only decent aftermath on the presentation. Robust nose, full of orange, apricot, and some spice that warms my heart. Equally good is the taste, in no small part because the aroma is realized in the taste. So often, what one detects in smell goes unrequited in the actual consumption. Not so here. Lots of fruit--apricot, orange, banana, pepper, hints of clove--all wrapped in a smooth texture. If there is anything I'd critique in the mouthfeel, it's the relative dearth as a Tripel in carbonation. It's one of the best features of, for example, Westmalle Tripel--the lush effervescence that co-mingles the flavors. Here, the flavors protrude somewhat in spite of the imbalanced texture. Smooth, yes; yet a tad flat late in this beer's life, alas.

However, this more than a game effort at a Tripel, all the more because it masks the high ABV. Although not on par with its other contributions such as the brilliant Hop Wallop, Victory has done itself and its devotees proud with this delicious Tripel. Well worth trying, a fine Tripel.

Beer pours a nice amber colour, lots of yeast, and i nice looking head that quickly fades. Smells fruity, but with an underlying content of alcohol, it's pleasant, but lets you know that there is a true beer lying underneath. Taste is beautiful, a full bodies feel and the spices really come through, tastes great without letting the abnormally high alcohol content hit you, hoppiness is also a very big plus, like drinking a fruity tree. As previously stated, the feel is tremendous, and the drinkability is also exceptionally high, especially for a Tripel, which usually leaves me feeling like a it's a little strong to keep drinking, while i could drink this all day, and love it. This is easily one of the best beers I've ever had, and I cannot recommend it highly enough

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a chalice of adequate size.

Head was small and a dark off-white leaving no lacing. Color is slightly orange-golden and clear.

Smell is cardamom, a bit of anise, bubblegum, orange and bread. Very well balanced such that no one scent is overwhelming.

Taste is like a strong pilsner. Bitter hops and sweetness with all of the scents carrying through. A nice full mouthfeel and heavy carbonation is the impression.

Very drinkable and reminiscent of the Sam Adams Hallartau Imperial Pilsner.

Golden Monkey is an Instant favorite. Deep golden pour, lots of frothy, creamy head with significant lacing. Yeasty, malty, sweet/honey, butterscotch/caramel on the nose. Great yeasty flavor, sweetness not overpowering, but just a tad thick on the mouthfeel. Thought the finish strangely dry for the sweetness and viscosity. This was a very flavorful and well-balanced brew in my opinion, can find some bitterness but have to look hard for it. This one’s a keeper! I'm told to age it a year and try it again, but I don't have near enough discipline to pull that off.

Revisit June 28, 2003 - Pours a nice golden orangey color with a heavy white loose frothy head about two fingers high, leaves minimal lace in strings. Smell is super nice floral aroma with good amounts of crispy citrus with a bit of spice. Taste is very smooth with complex layers of hard candy, bright citrus of lemon, orange, and grapefruit, with a sweet caramel malt backbone and a note of spiceyness. Feel is full bodied and solid. One hell of great offering of the style, impressive.

Pours a lovely golden yellow. Not much of a head, but I probably just poured it really terribly into my glass.

The smells is amongst the best in terms of the tripels I've had.

A rich bold yeasty, spicy smell with some fruity backup scents. Gorgeous.

The taste....YES. A nice spicy, bread and yeast sort of blend. Bold, but not too overpowering. Absolutely exceptional.

Smooth in the mouth considering pretty decent carbonation.

Drinkability is perfect. Exceptionally smooth for 9% abv, and a taste I love to come back to more and more. Probably my second favorite tripel. Great beer!

A: OK lacing and head retention. Bright golden color with some suspension.

S: Malt sweetness and fruity yeast. Smells like banana and spice. At 9.5% abv, I can start to smell the alcohol.

T: The yeast hits hard with this one. The fruityness is so strong at the beginning that I can barely make out any flavors. There is a super fruity bubble gum, banana, and spice flavor. The hops don't interfere with the yeast and make a brief appearance and quickly fade away. The aftertaste is surprisingly wet for being so alcoholic. Moderate alcoholic warmth. Tremendously balanced sweet fruityness, light hops, and alcohol. Earthy aftertaste.

M: Not bad at all for a trippel. Dextrins make their presence, but don't give off a syrupy character.

D: Probably the best single aspect. It drinks like a 6.5% abv. The aftertaste is mild and it ends wet. This would sneak up on me FAST at the bar.

I'm not as crazy about the Belgian beers, but this one is both complex and balanced. A great all around Belgian brew that stays true to its roots.

Hazy, peach colored with a white head that holds fairly well, and drops to a nice creamy collar but leaves no lace. The aroma is quite full with a soft fruitiness, some orange, a sweet bready malt, a light spice and some alcohol. The body is medium with a very fine & effervescent carbonation that caresses the tongue and fills the mouth. The taste is rich and full, with candyish malt, spice - some coriander is noticeable, and finishing with a lingering spicy sweet malt. The alcohol is noticeable but not overwhelming. Very well balanced with just enough hop bitterness and spice flavor to keep the big sweet malt from getting out of hand. Not extremely complex, but big. Very rich and highly enjoyable.

Pours a golden hue with a white head, smells like belgium, yet made in PA, this kicks ass, A multitude of flavors, yeasty spicy malty. I am a novice as far as Belgian styles go, but this beer seems to quench my thirst for that hard to descirbe flavor.
